Patrick Chung

March 18, 2021:
33-year old safety Patrick Chung retires after 11 NFL seasons

For personal reasons - and perhaps after seeing the writing on the wall - Patrick Chung retired on this day four years ago.

Chung had opted out of the 2020 covid season, but had been working out at Gillette Stadium, and it was assumed that he would return in 2021. In an interview with CBS the previous year he explained that "It was a tough decision. You want to play football. I'm in the latter end of my career, but when it comes down to it, I feel money is not that important. I have a girlfriend who is pregnant, a baby girl coming soon, my son has a little asthma, my dad is 75 years old. I just felt like this was the best decision for my family to keep everyone safe. It's not over, it's just postponed a little bit."

The Patriots had already signed free agent Adrian Phillips to a two-year, 6 million contract in 2020. He and Devin McCourty were returning as starters, and the Pats had used the #37 pick of the 2020 draft on Kyle Dugger. And three days earlier the Patriots signed free agent Jalen Mills to a four-year, $24 million contract. Although Mills spent his first four seasons at corner, the Eagles had switched him safety full time in 2020. With all that in mind, Chung was not a shoo-in to make the 2021 roster.

Bill Belichick had selected Chung as a second-round draft pick in 2009, out of Oregon. After four seasons in New England he signed with the Eagles as a free agent in 2013, then was released after a single season with multiple injuries. Chung returned to the Pats and in his first season back won the first of three super bowls. He played in 153 regular season NFL games (141 with the Patriots), plus 23 playoff games (22 with the Pats). The Patriots went 15-7 in those postseason games. Chung is a member of the Patriots All-2010s Team.

A bit of Patrick Chung trivia you may have forgotten: He was born in Jamaica, and his mother was a singer who once had a top-ten single in the UK. He is also the only player in NFL history to appear in the playoffs in each of his first 11 seasons.

One of the great examples of how different a player's career arc can be depending on their circumstance. In his first tour here and also in PHI, he wasn't consistently used to his strengths. He was on the verge of being out of the league. By the time he came back though, we had switched to the cover 1 man scheme rather than zone heavy and had McCourty/Harmon here to play the second deep safety role when we needed it. He was able to play to his strengths and he was a really good player in that role.

Your threads typically bring up some great memories and Chung was definitely part of a few. What a good move by both parties to give it a second try here.

I was on a first date several years ago and Chung was a few tables over with his wife I believe. I didn't bother him. The woman I was with liked football too so she got a kick out of it. Definitely helped the first date to have something interesting like that going on. Just typical Chung doing something unnoticed to help someone out on the field.

There was a whole lot going on early in that 2021 offseason.

Today in Patriots History
Duron Harmon

March 18, 2020:
Patriots trade safety Duron Harmon, plus a seventh round draft pick, to Detroit for a fifth round pick

Harmon had 17 interceptions in 111 games over seven seasons with the Patriots. "The Closer" was clutch in the playoffs, with four more interceptions in the postseason - winning three super bowl championships.

This was strictly a move to free up some salary cap space. January began with TE Ben Watson retiring, and near the end of the month OL coach Dante Scarnecchia doing the same. Though we didn't want to face reality, it had become apparent that Tom Brady was going to sign elsewhere as a free agent. Speculation was that the Pats would sign Andy Dalton or Jameis Winston to become the new QB, while others made a case to hand the keys to Jarrett Stidham. In early March the Patriots exercised a team option on Jason McCourty, and gave his brother Devin a two-year, $23 million contract extension. Former Browns assistant GM Eliot Wolf was hired as a consultant.

Then things happened in rapid fire succession. The Patriots placed the franchise tag on Joe Thuney, Kyle Van Noy signed with Miami, Jamie Collins with Detroit, and then the nuclear bomb dropped: Tom Brady announced he was leaving the organization. That was followed up by the signing of . . . WR Damiere Byrd. With all else that was going on, trading Duron Harmon - in yet another cost-saving move - barely registered a blip on Patriot Nation's radar screen.

The New England Patriots announced that they have traded DB Duron Harmon to the Detroit Lions.

Harmon, 29, is a veteran of seven seasons with New England after originally entering the NFL as a third-round draft pick (91st overall) out of Rutgers in the 2013 NFL Draft. The 6-foot-1, 205-pounder was a part of three Super Bowl Championships with the Patriots. Harmon has played in 111 regular-season games with 29 starts and has registered 171 tackles, 17 interceptions for 193 yards, 28 passes defensed, one forced fumble and three fumble recoveries. In addition, he has played 17 postseason contests with six starts and has accumulated 15 tackles, four interceptions for 39 yards and five passes defensed.

Harmon, who becomes a free agent in 2021, carries a $4.25 million cap hit in 2020. Given New England's current depth at safety -- McCourty, Patrick Chung and Terrence Brooks are all returning -- and lack of cap space, Belichick apparently believes Harmon's money will be better spent elsewhere.

Harmon will reunite with his former defensive coordinator in Lions head coach Matt Patricia, though, and said he has no hard feelings about the move.

“At the end of the day you have to look at it from both sides,” Harmon said. “At the time, at the moment you hear you got traded and you’re like, ‘Aww, man.’ But, then you sit back and look at it and the Patriots had to make some decisions. We had the opportunity to play last year with so many great defensive players. It was so many players everywhere, and just with the salary cap, I understand the decision. When I talked to Bill he told me what the decision was based on and he told me, ‘Look, it is just at the point where we have to make some moves and we just paid Dev (McCourty), it’s just going to be really tough to really do anything, or get anything done in free agency if we don’t do this.’

“And he was just telling me it’s going to be a great opportunity for me (in Detroit). I respect that because at the end of the day we know Bill is going to do what is best for the team and I respect that because not a lot of people can do that and have that commitment and dedication that the team is first.”

The trade reunited Harmon with his former defensive coordinator, Lions head coach Matt Patricia. Harmon, a third-round selection in the 2013 NFL Draft out of Rutgers, played in four Super Bowls with the Patriots, winning three.

The Patriots acquired a fifth-round pick for Harmon and a seventh-rounder in a cap-cutting move. The Patriots since signed two safeties, Adrian Phillips and Cody Davis.

The way Bill used him at FS in his first stint was bizarre. My guess was because Merriweather was playing SS. Then he was used exactly the same way in Philly only to settle in when he was a box S upon his return to NE.

Yeah, Chung may have been closer to being a linebacker than a free safety.
Seems crazy to think of him being a free safety now.

I don't know why, but that just reminded me of Bill's tinkering with the idea of utilizing a 'big nickel' defense, when he went and signed Tank Williams, and later John Lynch. Bring in a safety to replace the Will, rather than another corner. Allowed defenses to remain stout against a run, and still provide coverage on a tight end that was more of a receiver than blocker.

The column below by Greg Bedard on drafting Harmon did not age well.

There is this assesment:

■ Receiver Aaron Dobson, Marshall (second round, 59th overall): The more film I watched of Dobson, the more I liked him. If he’s as smart as the Patriots think he is — and a solid 19 on the Wonderlic test plus his feel for the game indicate he is — then I think the Patriots have ended their draft drought at wide receiver.

Then this take on the Pats fourth selection:

■ Safety Duron Harmon, Rutgers, (third round, 91st overall): This one still remains a bit of a headscratcher because Harmon does appear a bit limited on film. He’ll be compared to the safeties taken in the fourth roundDuke Williams (105, Bills), Shamarko Thomas (111, Steelers), Phillip Thomas (119, Redskins) — for years to come. Thomas will be the most interesting case because the Steelers traded up to get him and needed a play-making safety.

Okay Greg, let us compare.

Duron Harmon: 11 years, 168 games played, 24 interceptions, 18 playoff games, three rings
Duke Williams: 4 seasons, 58 games played (10 starts), one interception, zero playoff games
Shamarko Thomas: 6 seasons, 66 games played (2 starts), zero interceptions, four playoff games
Phillip Thomas: one season, 8 games played (4 starts), zero interceptions, zero playoff games

To be fair, Phillip Thomas had what was firts thought to be a mild sprain in his first preseason game, but it turned out to be a torn Lisfranc, so that comparison deserves an asterisk. But this 'analysis' is a good example of the pitfalls of graing a draft hours after it has been completed, especially if it is based on where the media projects a player to be drafted.

20th Century March 18 Trivia

March 18, 1989:
Patriots sign Plan B free agent C David Douglas

Douglas had been an 8th round pick by the Bengals in 1983, from Tennessee, and played in 40 games with four starts for Cincinnati. he bounced back and forth with the Pats in '89: waived on the final cutdown on September 4, re-signed September 13, waived again on September 30 and signed again on October 19. In two season with New England Douglas played in 16 games, with six starts, subbing for Mike Baab in 1989 and splitting time at center with Gene Chilton and Paul Fairchild in 1990.

March 18, 1991:
Patriots lose Plan B free agent TE Eric Sievers to Miami

Sievers was originally a 4th round pick by San Diego in 1981, out of Maryland. He played eight season for the Chargers and one game for the Rams before signing with New England on March 31, 1989. At this point he was about to turn 34, and had already played in his last NFL game. Sievers had 54 receptions for 615 yards - both career highs - with the Patriots in 1989, but his playing time dropped dramatically in 1990 with second year man Marv Cook seeing far more action.

March 18, 1993:
Patriots sign unrestricted veteran free agent DE Aaron Jones

Jones was the 18th overall selection in the 1988 draft by Pittsburgh, out of Eastern Kentucky. He started 12 games as a rookie, but never lived up to his draft status, starting only ten more games over the next four seasons. Jones had 8½ sacks in 38 games over three seasons with New England, before finishing his career in 1996 with Miami.

March 18, 1998:
Pete Carroll hires two new coaches, and reassigns two others

Jack Reilly is hired as the Quarterbacks Coach
DeWayne Walker is hired as a Defensive Assistant
Jeff Davidson is moved to Assistant Offensive Line Coach
Carl Smith is reassigned to Tight Ends Coach

Reilly began his coaching career in 1968 at Beverly Hills High School. His most recent positions had been as the Rams OC, and the Cowboys QB coach; he returned to Dallas as their OC in 2000.

Walker started his coaching career at a community college in 1988. This was his first job in the NFL, and he became Pete Carroll's first hire at USC in 2001. He is currently a defensive analyst for the Arizona State Sun Devils.

Davidson coached in the NFL from 1995 to 2019. He was hired by the Pats in 1997 as their TE coach, and earned rings for SB36 (assistant offensive line coach) and SB38 and 39 (TE coach/asst OL coach).

Smith began his coaching career as a grad student at Cal Polytechnic State in 1971. He was with the Patriots for all three of Pete Carroll's seasons as head coach. Carroll hired Smith to be USC's QB coach in 2004, when they were national champions with Matt Cassel backing up Matt Leinart. Smith later spent eight seasons with the Seahawks, earning a ring as their QB coach. He finally retired in 2023 at the age of 74, after serving as Seattle's associate head coach.

Darius Butler

Happy 39th birthday to Darius Butler
Born March 18, 1986; from Coral Springs, Florida
Patriot CB, 2009-2010; uniform #28
Patriots 2nd round (41st overall) selection of the 2009 NFL Draft, from UConn
Pats résumé: two seasons, 29 games (8 starts); three interceptions, one pick-six, 14 passes defensed; two playoff games

Loved the Darius Butler pick as he was also endorsed by Deion Sanders. He was also unfortunately misused. He was asked to immediately start on the outside, but struggled badly. Had a nice career in the slot with the Colts.

Pats need to go back to these uniforms with a redesign. I'd keep the flying Elvis larger where they are, just make them larger.

Dexter Reid

Happy 44th birthday to Dexter Reid
Born March 18, 1981 in Norfolk, Virginia
Patriot S, 2004; uniform #42
Patriots 4th round (113th overall) selection of the 2004 NFL Draft, from the University of North Carolina
Pats résumé: one season, 13 games (2 starts); 25 tackles, two passes defensed, one forced fumble, one fumble recovery

It's not often that a team gives up on a fourth round pick after one season. Even more rare when that player gets two rings in his three-season, 39 game NFL career. Not surprised that he sold it four years ago.

Bill Belichick didn't care for, or forget about this TD pass to Greg Lewis in Super Bowl 39
Prior to that play Terrell Owens made mincemeat of Reid over and over again
