March 18, 2021:
33-year old safety Patrick Chung retires after 11 NFL seasons
For personal reasons - and perhaps after seeing the writing on the wall - Patrick Chung retired on this day four years ago.
Chung had opted out of the 2020 covid season, but had been working out at Gillette Stadium, and it was assumed that he would return in 2021. In an interview with CBS the previous year he explained that "It was a tough decision. You want to play football. I'm in the latter end of my career, but when it comes down to it, I feel money is not that important. I have a girlfriend who is pregnant, a baby girl coming soon, my son has a little asthma, my dad is 75 years old. I just felt like this was the best decision for my family to keep everyone safe. It's not over, it's just postponed a little bit."
The Patriots had already signed free agent Adrian Phillips to a two-year, 6 million contract in 2020. He and Devin McCourty were returning as starters, and the Pats had used the #37 pick of the 2020 draft on Kyle Dugger. And three days earlier the Patriots signed free agent Jalen Mills to a four-year, $24 million contract. Although Mills spent his first four seasons at corner, the Eagles had switched him safety full time in 2020. With all that in mind, Chung was not a shoo-in to make the 2021 roster.
Bill Belichick had selected Chung as a second-round draft pick in 2009, out of Oregon. After four seasons in New England he signed with the Eagles as a free agent in 2013, then was released after a single season with multiple injuries. Chung returned to the Pats and in his first season back won the first of three super bowls. He played in 153 regular season NFL games (141 with the Patriots), plus 23 playoff games (22 with the Pats). The Patriots went 15-7 in those postseason games. Chung is a member of the Patriots All-2010s Team.
A bit of Patrick Chung trivia you may have forgotten: He was born in Jamaica, and his mother was a singer who once had a top-ten single in the UK. He is also the only player in NFL history to appear in the playoffs in each of his first 11 seasons.
