While it would be unusual for NE to bring in Manziel - being well undersized compared to BBs QBs (6'0 vs 6'2+) and carrying lots of off-field noise that will not go away just by turning a new page - some Patriots interest in him seems to be real. Not only did they watch him closely on two separate pro days - which could be circumstantial - they also met with him twice one-on-one yesterday, before and after his work out at Taxas A&M pro day.

More importantly, Lombardi said Patriots had real interest in him going into 2014 Draft. They brought him together with Garoppolo for a pre-draft visit and Manziel did very well. If off-field change is real he says Pats could be interested.

Agree, So the message is that addicts like Snoop Dog Harmon, and you have to be an addict to pull that crap, their transgressions are just brushed off? . Like it or not, he's a stoner. The worse part is he is a Team captain.
If I am GM he is cut.
Don't give me crap about it's not a Drug. Too many things close to me to just sit still while stoners tell me the old alcohol versus smocking dope crap.
If the black players (or white) need to cry out that this isn't fair, I'll tell them about it for real.
We certainly can find a non stoner to take his place.

When about 50% of the league smokes weed, it doesn’t appear to be as easy to replace them as you are suggesting.

Also, how many of the other 31 teams cut their 5 year veteran safety for getting caught with some pot on vacation, especially if he hasn’t caused any problems before?

Cousin, if I'm the commissioner, 50% of the league is banned for life right now. If the black players want to complain then I'll fight them myself. I'll kill all the stoners, and we'll find non-stoners to take their place.

Right

So folks think that Harmon has never broken the law before, and that this is the first time that he has carried weed on a plane.

So, using an illegal drug in violation of his contract isn't an issue in violation. Carrying drugs across state lines isn't an issue. Getting caught is an issue. And that sometimes is an issue, only if the player gets caught twice, and THEN he is a problem child [for getting caught twice make a player more likely to punished by the league].

So we are down to comparing Harmon now to a guy who got photographed snorting cocaine in a Vegas bathroom ? A guy who was so toxic in Cleveland that he got players to at his party a night before a game ? A player who has overslept commitments (Manning academy, treatment with Browns) multiple times ?

Sorry but this comparison is silly. Harmon has shown to be a leader, positive locker room presence and has made dozens of crucial plays on an NFL field. All things Manziel has failed at. So of course he will get a longer leash over the weed accident than Manziel over anything.

Can we just cut you instead ?

Someone disliked this basic, obvious comment. Heh.

Personally, I’m all about second and third chances and wouldn’t really have much of a problem with bringing him here as a camp arm, but as luuked has already pointed out, where does he get practice reps at? I don’t mind taking a flier at yet another former first round pick with some raw talent, but he doesn’t seem like much of a fit in this offense.

We wouldn’t be in a position to keep three QBs, and we’re assuming that a rookie will be selected. Between Brady, Hoyer, and the rookie, there doesn’t seem to be many more valuable reps to be given. I mean, he could get some time playing in the preseason, but where does it go from there?

The only way I could see him brought in would be if the team waited until UDFAs to pick up their no name QB, and then attempted to get him through to the practice squad, while keeping Manziel as a QB3. It may be a bit difficult to imagine that scenario happening.

Well, I think they bring him in and find a way if they think he's worth the effort, as simple as that sounds. But I doubt he is, or that they'll think he is.

Manziel would likely land on the practice squad if he were to stick.

It's not impossible that they told Manziel they'd wait until after the draft. If they draft a QB in the 1st or 2nd who they really like, then Manziel's out of luck. But if they don't, maybe they figure Manziel is a better dart throw than anyone who's available after that (he is) and make that their calculus for the rest of the draft.

There’s no reason they are not only drafting a QB but also signing Manziel with a growth determination/intention of ending up on the practice squad.

Yeah, the idea that Manziel would be a practice squad player is absurd. I wouldn't be surprised if the Patriots draft a QB or sign Manziel and Hoyer is shown the door and it's just Brady and developmental QB on the opening day roster. Teams won't exactly be batting down his door, and if the worst happens then he'll still be a phone call away. They've done this plenty of times in the past with rookies (Mallett, Garoppolo, etc.) The reason Hoyer was signed at all is because they didn't have anyone and they were halfway through the season.

No one would sign him off the practice squad once the season starts. For the Pats it’s an investment that costs a practice squad spot and a fart in the wind amount of money. For the player he gets to be involved in the game and be coached at a high level without any distractions. AJ is right on this, it makes a lot of sense and if it doesn’t work out, at any point the player or team can ask for release and it doesn’t hurt either party.
