Maybe, but its a horrible way to judge a football players functional strength. Answer this, how often do you see a lineman doing a bench press or any motion remotely like it on a football field? Its just as relevant as a WRs 40 time, as long as you get under 4.8, or 20 reps on the bench, it shows you have enough to get into the league and have done the time prepping. Logan Mankins was one of the nastiest meanest most vicious road grader guards i have ever seen. Did 21 reps on the bench cuz he spent his childhood wrestling steers instead of pumping iron. Hannah was before my time but read every comment about his physique, every last one talks about how MASSIVE his thighs were. Lineman strength is all about the legs and ass, you have to be able to push, anchor, and explode into guys and that is 98% lower body. Long jump means more to me then bench press as its a solid indicator of explosive power. Any idea who Stephen Paea is? Me nither cuz he was a scrub in the NFL but holds the record for NFL combine bench press.Bench press is a great way to measure upper body strength… which is why the test for it at the combine and a hundred pro days around the nation.

A fan forum having a chat about something evidence of nothing except it’s offseason and there’s nothing to talk about. He is considered so promising at OG that we are having a thread about switching to DT.
He is considered so promising at OG that we used a 4th to sign another guard.
If team agrees with you, then Mafi will surely make the team ahead of Leverett. I suspect that they consider Mafi less promising than you do.
Did you just ask how often I see linemen utilizing muscles involved in bench press?Maybe, but its a horrible way to judge a football players functional strength. really comes down to health and coaching. this thread is littered with the names of Neal, Shaq, Onwenu...all players that improved greatly with really good to great coaching. that has been lacking for a while now. if the team has the right coaches for the OL, there is a ton of talent available. may take some time. none of the player talent might be all pro level. but as a unit there is a chance to be very good with health and great coachingHe is considered so promising at OG that we are having a thread about switching to DT.

Every single play.
Bench is one of many data points used to evaluate prospects, not the only one. You measurable deniers are funny, you pretend somebody ever said playerX has a fast forty time so his success is assured… nobody said any such thing.
That being said, once a player shows he can play… players like Randy Moss, Barry Sanders or Deion Sanders were ridiculously successful because they were really really fast, explosive, strong and mobile. This was visible in the measurables before the draft.
Reading comprehension isnt your strong suit is it? I didnt say using any muscle involved in a bench press i said doing a bench press or any motion like it because it almost never happens. This isnt a difficult concept, there is a difference between gym strong and actually strong. Barry Sander wasnt fast, go look at the highlights of all his longest runs, caught from behind in almost all of them. What he had was a freakish ability to start and stop with unreal vision. Jerry Rice has a notoriously slow 40 time yet is still the GOAT wr. Measurables arent everything, if they were tyquan thorton would be an all pro and Tom Brady would be an unknown insurance salesman.Answer this, how often do you see a lineman doing a bench press or any motion remotely like it on a football field?
Faster yes … but oline harder to play. Shift to the inside as a run stopper could work alla WilforkSomething something defensive players considerably more athletic than OL

Offensive lineman have a punch, that involves upper body strength and lower body strength. There's no downside to strength, and one measurable doesn't define any prospect... like I said earlier, it's one data point. Saying measurables don't matter is absurd... because there's a million guys who didn't make it because they weren't athletic enough.Reading comprehension isnt your strong suit is it? Reps with no pads etc is eh... guess we will have to wait and see how well he does in camp...
How exactly did we go from talking about a specific exercise, for a specific group, not being a good indication of strength, to talking about if Randy Moss was fast or athletic? Read my original post I said long jump is more valuable then bench press so at not point did I go down this absurd rabbit hole that measureables don’t matter. I said bench press for lineman, especially long armed tackles, is useless as long as you can do the 20 or so minimum that proves you’ve been to a gym enough to be in the NFL. Bench press tells you precisely squat about a players functional strength, so it’s not a good data point and I could not care less that our drafted rookies didn’t lift.Offensive lineman have a punch, that involves upper body strength and lower body strength. Barry Sanders was hyper fast, he just ran for a lot of yards. Even Barry got tired, defenders took good angles and some were also hyper fast. In the words of Gil Brandt:
"He got out of the car, got into some sweats, limbered up a little bit and ran a 4.37 in the 40-yard dash! I remember standing next to Wayne Fontes, who was the Lions head coach at the time. The Lions picked third and we (the Cowboys) were picking first, and it was pretty obvious we were taking Troy Aikman. So Fontes whispers to me, “Hey, I don’t care if he works out or not, we’re taking him No. 3.” I joked with him and told him not to be so sure he’d be there, but he didn’t fall for it.” - Gil Brandt on Oklahoma State pro day
Nobody said "measurables are everything," nobody...
But Randy Moss was dangerously athletic and fast, they called him the freak... give me a break.
NFL scouts test for it at the combine and pro days because it’s relevant. How exactly did we go from talking about a specific exercise, for a specific group, not being a good indication of strength, to talking about if Randy Moss was fast or athletic? Lazar told us Mohamed Sanu’s agility and ability to create separation was exquisite and on full display in camp after his injury. I pointed out how he looked slower than N’Keal… five minutes later he was cut. Ten minutes later he was out of the league.FWIW,
Barth and Lazar are expecting Mafi to be cut. He's lacking the lateral movement skills to play Guard at the NFL level.
not really.
Whether Sow ia moved to LG is relevant to the decision at RT.
Does anyone truly think that the coaching staff will judge that Wallace is a better RT in 2024 than Onwenu, the man they judged paid all that money for? Really?
IMO, the reporting has been clear, although obviously, time on the field can change the situation. The expectation of the team is that the starting lineup will most likely be
Okrorafor, Mafi/Sow, Andrews, Mafi/Sow, Onwenu, and with Leverett being the emergency veteran backup at guard and center. I
