Krieger: Broncos' Brandon Marshall much deeper than any caricature

Brandon Marshall (Denver Post file photo)It has been so easy, turning Brandon Marshall into a caricature. Bad guy. Bad teammate. Hothead. Diva.

And worse, sorta kinda responsible for teammate Darrent Williams' death. After all, he admitted escalating the nightclub confrontation with east Denver gang members that preceded the drive-by shooting of Williams' limousine. That's well known.

If you listened to all the testimony in the Williams murder trial, you know it's also simplistic. In addition to the role Marshall and his cousin played in the back-and-forth that night, there was also a recurring territorial dispute between the Denver Crips and Williams' friends, an aspiring rap group from Fort Worth, Texas.

Did Willie Clark pursue Williams' 40-foot white Hummer limousine rather than Marshall's standard Lincoln limo because of the territorial dispute? Because it was more ostentatious, more "disrespectful" to the hometown crew? Because it was the last to leave?

With Clark proclaiming his innocence after the conviction, we may never know. But the conclusion that Marshall's part in the nightclub altercation provided the primary motive for the shooting is not supported by the testimony.

Still, Marshall clearly had a role. By his own admission, he's haunted by it. That's less well known, so let's try to flesh out the caricature a bit.

The admission came early in his court testimony, when prosecutor Tim Twining directed his attention to that night by asking if he remembered it.

"I think about it every night," Marshall said.

In an era when few pro athletes are willing to sacrifice street cred by taking a stand against gangs, Marshall spent much of the 2008 NFL season donating one afternoon a week to Open Door Youth Gang Alternatives, the Rev. Leon Kelly's gang prevention program in northeast Denver.

Here is some of what he told the older kids, mostly middle school students, on his first visit, in June 2008:

"If you Google my name, you'll see a lot of negative things because I've made mistakes. So I'm not someone here talking to you guys because I'm Mr. Perfect. No. I'm from the same neighborhood you guys are from, the same type of environment, and I'm speaking to you guys from my heart and it's real.

"I have a younger sister, she has three kids now. She's 21. She had her first kid when she was 15. So my life isn't perfect. My family isn't perfect. I have family members who's locked up, family members on drugs. Our family isn't perfect. We've bumped our heads before.

"You have a chance to do some spectacular things in your life. What I'm saying is, take this time while you're young and become something. Make something of yourself.

"I don't want to live like my mom and my dad, or some of my family members, where it's week by week, check by check, where it's a struggle. You guys know how it is. No hot water. Bills ain't paid. No cellphone. No food in the 'frigerator. I been through it.

"I been through a whole winter where I didn't have no hot water, no heat. We heated up our house with the oven. I been through it. So I know what some of you guys are going through. I know it. I still have family that's going through the same thing. You don't want to live that way. You have a chance to make your own decisions and your own choices right now.

"What you guys need to do is really focus and get y'all grades and make something of y'all self. Don't run with the wrong crowd."

Near the end of this visit, Kelly asked Marshall to talk to the kids about the lessons of his teammate's murder.

"It just opens your eyes to finally realize that no matter how good you're doing or if you're doing positive things, there's so much that can be taken away from you like that. You never know. He never knew what hit him. He never knew what was going on. It's sad to say that.

"You guys just got to know that everyone in the world's not great. Everyone in the world is not trying to do good. So you've got to put yourself in good environments and good positions where you can't be hurt. Protect your feelings and protect yourself and always keep your eyes open. We lost a teammate, a friend, a father, so much. And it hurts."

Maybe it would be better for all concerned if Marshall got a fresh start elsewhere. That's the Broncos' call now.

But he is not a caricature. He is a bright, emotional, conflicted, accomplished athlete. And he has tried, through engagement with Open Door and his trial testimony, to compensate for whatever role he played in that tragedy more than three years ago.

Boy, what a scumbag!!!

Great post! Although someone here will try to spin this in a negative light.

One final chance, your solution opposite Moss, to keep the Pats up in the upper echelon of the AFC......knowing we are without a TE and a ground game.

Time is up

I just think the Patriots can't put out that kind of money to sign him to a long term deal (because of upcoming Brady extension) and they do not want to spend a first round draft pick for a one year rental.

The pats are in the upper echelon. This guy is a CRIMINAL. Dabruinz is right. Chemistry is just as important as talent. (2001 pats).

The draft will have our #2 WR. Marshall is a loser.

Um the money that would carry over to next year would be relatively close to what we're paying Moss who isn't going to be here, so it's a wash.

correction it would be less.

IMO its interesting the way the media play the giver of information, its all damning, all fooked up, its always look on the bad side for everything, just a little glimmer of sunshine is always over shadowed by the the wrong doing, the simple feeling that people supposedly want to see failure in others to make themselves feel better about themselves. Hense the garbage press that haunts 'celebrity' misgivings.

Its obvious that people only see the bad in people and not the good anymore, for me its a damn shame that this is how the worlds media performs on a daily basis. The bad image always prevails.

For me that article alone has shown a whole different side, one that I'm sure people will say is driven by his agent, tbh I don't care... if thats what it takes to be shown a bit of truth, humility.. so be it.

If you believe that then you need to check out some tape on Sanchez.

As in this.

YouTube - Sanchez to Edwards TD pass

Please, I've seen him play, and his stats don't lie.
12 Tds and 20 picks, and that's with the help of the #1 running game in the league.

Good Luck with that!

It's not just the attitude, you want to use our only 1st round pick on him..

The Jets could trade for DeMarcus ware and Troy Polamalu and some people here would still say that it hurt their team..

We have two next year, in a rookie cap draft in all possibilty.

And your saying Marshall is not worth a first.. on production was Welker worth a 2nd before the trade happened!?

I haven't seen anyone say Marshall would hurt them on the field, but a few who say he will hurt their lockerroom, and more than a few who say this move could put them in cap/financial hell if the cap comes back in 2011.

Bottom line--this hasn't even happened yet, and probably WON'T happen, especially if the Jets are being honest about needing to keep their #1 pick. People getting awfully worked up about a deal that hasn't happened and probably won't.

Talk is cheap and the road to hell is, as they say, paved with good intentions. He hasn't been a good teamate when it comes to doing his job to the best of his ability. He caused problems for Shanny before Josh ever arrived on scene. If they felt he could be trusted they'd have extended him in Denver long ago. Trust is earned, not demanded. He appeared intent on playing the poor Brandon card when he testified. The jury wasn't impressed. That's why they convicted the man he consciously chose to mess with of murdering an essentially innocent bystander.

I have the feeling a lot of you are in the 18-25 demographic that hasn't fully grasped the concept of consequence yet. Marshall could have had his deal a couple of seasons ago. Shanny is nothing is not a sucker for talent. He'll even enable them within reason. Ergo the lie detector bs. But Marshall even wore Shannahan's tolerance thin. He pulled disrespectful and disruptive crap on his new HC entering last season. He ended the same way and was benched as a result even though it possibly cost them a playoff spot. That is the kind of talent that is worthless because you can't count on it when you need it most.

Remind me how many off field issues Welker had in Miami and how disruptive and disrespectful of authority he was and how many times he had to be benched by his new HC...

Look, Brandon's attitude only turned sour when he saw his good friend and a great QB jettisened out to Chicago. At that point Brandon knew the team really had no shot and he was angry. How would Vincent Jackson or Reggie Wayne feel if a guy they built up a rapport with on the field was sent packing especially a guy of Cutler's stature. Sure he was pissed and he was resentful towards Josh, why?, well because Josh made the mistake of leaking info he shouldn't have leaked and it came back to bite him in the arse and that poor choice ultimately alienated his talented WR.

If you put Brandon in this offense with Tom Brady you would see "the best" of Brandon Marshall because he knows that there is a big difference between Kyle Orton and THOF. Brandon wants to win like anyone else.

Moss and Marshall would give Tom Brady his elusive 4th ring...........Hello Joe Montana.........
