We've spent a lot of this year talking about the offensive personnel, both as we think of its talent level, and as we think of its applied talent level. Well, with just two games left in the regular season, I think we have enough data to do some rating.

So, let's compare the various groups of the AFCE, from 1-4.

QB
RB
TE
WR
OL

It's tempting to break down those categories further, and talk about subgroups like tackle/IOL and FB/3dRB, but let's start with full groups and then flesh out the "Yeahbut" stuff afterwards.

So let's have at it, Pollyannas, Eeyores, and all those in between.

QB 2
RB 3
TE 4
WR 4
OL 4

QB
1) New England. Not playing like the Brady of old, but you still feel good about him with the ball in his hands down by a field goal in the 4th quarter in a way that the others don't.
2) Buffalo. Allen's legs make him scary to defenses, but he's still way too prone to boneheaded mistakes.
3) Miami. Fitzpatrick's still got a little magic in him. At 37, you wonder if he'll be playing his completely bonkers peaks-and-valleys football into his 40s.
4) New York. Darnold has all the tools but he's still a wreck. Coaching's going to ruin him.

RB
1) New York. Bell's the best running back in the division, even if he's stuck on a bad team.
2) New England. This has nothing to do with Sony Michel and everything to do with James White, vastly underrated even by his own fans.
3) Buffalo. Singletary looks promising and Gore is still cranking out inefficient yards, but there's no real star here.
4) Miami. Who the hell is Patrick Laird?

TE
1) Buffalo. Dawson Knox has questionable hands but he's a good blocker with promising receiving ability.
2) New York. Ryan Griffin is a pretty useful player.
3) Miami. At least Mike Gesicki can catch? He can't block though.
4) New England. Couldn't see Matt Lacosse being bad coming, what with his previous career high of 15 catches or whatever.

WR
1) New England. Pretty weak unit, but the rest of the division isn't exactly covering itself in glory and the Patriots have the best receiver in the division. This rating is basically a "take the best player" and an indictment of the rest of the options rather than an endorsement of the Patriots.
2) Buffalo. John Brown's been a revelation and Beasley is a pretty good slot guy. The rest are hit-or-miss.
3) New York. Might be too low but there isn't much star power between Anderson and Crowder.
4) Miami. Higher if they hadn't traded away Kenny Stills, DeVante Parker is a mediocrity and everyone else is miserable.

OL
1) New England. Cannon hasn't played well at all, but Mason has been playing better the last few weeks, Thuney is very good, and Wynn looks like he'll be a stud.
2) Buffalo. A good run blocking unit but pretty mediocre in pass protection; not a great combination with a quarterback prone to making mistakes.
3) New York. Maybe the second worst offensive line in football...
4) Miami. ...Probably the worst offensive line in football. I think they've had a different combination in every game.

The Patriots look good in this but really it's a pretty low bar. The Bills offense isn't particularly impressive (like the Patriots, they're winning with their defense), and the Jets and Dolphins are both pretty miserable.

Levon Belch is having the worst season of his career averaging 3.3 yards per carry, his best game being 87 yards. He's a shell of his former self.

Who is he playing for?

Bell gave up 14.5 million dollars ... so he could play for the Jets

LOL

He has no OL, in fairness. Beachum is as bad as Newhouse.

Meh, he's mailing it in. Googly Gaze never wanted him and he knows it.

That’s kind of the point of a $13M running back though...shouldn’t be able to blame a bad offensive line. Otherwise take your pick of like 50 other guys at a fraction of the price.

Thought the few games I’ve seen he was out there gutting it out. Jets fans seem to appreciate the effort.

Based on this years performance, I would rate our O line behind Buffalo's.

I would still rank Brady number 1 followed by Allen.

Tight end we're last

Wr close with Buffalo as 1a, 1b

Rb I like our depth...I'd put us ahead of the Buffalo and Jets.

Is it crazy to rank Fitzpatrick above Allen?

He has 57 catches though so even with 8 men in the box and fewer carries than he's averaged in his career, he's still contributing (on a very bad team).

That seems an impressive number of catches until you see 7.1 yards average/catch and one touchdown (just four TDs total all season). I dunno, I wouldn't rank him the division's top RB. I think Singletary's better.

Allen is taking good care of the ball, as I think he’s only thrown a couple/few picks in his last 10 games. He’s also rushed for 9 touchdowns this year. He looks like he’s taking a nice year two leap and justifying their selection in the draft.

Fitzpatrick is a turnover machine, although I haven’t really been paying attention to him this season.

Allen leads the league in 3rd down conversions or is top 3 I believe. He digs himself a hole & will get out w his talent but he's been a much better QB than last year

I’m not breaking it down by position groups, but pending Saturday’s outcome I rank the AFCE teams as:
1. A) NE
1. B) BUF
4 (tie) MIA, NYJ

1A > 1B but not greatly better. Close enough to change Saturday.

I rank them:

Under-performing
Below average
Bad
Good lord they're bad
