Jets give Sanchez 5-year contract extension

It's only a good deal if he becomes a good QB. You just guaranteed Sanchez to be your starter for the next 2 years where if he wasn't resigned the Jets could have got rid of him after this season if he has another bad year.

Tanny & Rex have tied themselves to Sanchez. If he doesn't turn the corner all 3 of them will be gone in 2 seasons.
would of had to pay a price to cut him after this season on the original contract.

A couple of comments on twitter I thought I would share.

Greg Cosell: "Maybe just as important for Jets is whether Greene is true feature back. With Sanchez run game must be foundation of off"

To me this is something that is very true, and is being overlooked. In conjunction with that, how effective is the Jets offensive line at this point? I heard some radio host who was doing a horrible job of hiding his being a Jet fan this past week, practically in glee declaring that Manning to the Jets was a sure thing, berating a caller who suggested the Jets o-line was over rated. He threw out the names of Mangold and Ferguson - both very good players - but what about the rest of the line? Jets ranked 30th in rushing yards per attempt (3.8) and ranked 20th in sacks allowed (40) despite being in the middle of the pack in passes attempted (34 per game, 17th).

Tim Graham: "Dolfans should recognize last night's Jets maneuver. Same move when Fins couldn't land Harbaugh, then pledged undying love to Sparano."

Mangold's the best center in the game right now

Ferguson is a good, but wildly overrated, left tackle

Slauson sucks, but has shown improvement

Moore's a solid player, though his decline may have begun

Hunter was an absolute disaster

Greene's a platoon back, and not a particularly good one. To give him his due, he was much better with ball security last season than he had been previously.

But, it really all comes down to whether or not the next O.C. can find a way for the WRs to break open early, because Sanchez sucks at reading defenses and really struggles to pull off of his primary target. For the Jets fans who'll come howling, I'm not talking about plays where he deliberately looks defenders away, but about plays where his primary read is covered and he has to scan the field in earnest. The Jets locked themselves into Sanchez for another year in order to free up $6 million dollars. It's great for non-Jets fans, but it should be reassuring for Jets fans as well. They now know the expiration date for Tanny/Rex. They've got 2 years to make a splash, or they're out.

Then new hires will be made and Jets fans can start with their delusions of grandeur all over again.

It still would have been cheaper, and Sanchez will 'request' a renegotiation in 2 years if he becomes worth anything as a QB. The only way this deal helps the Jets is if they bag multiple prizes in this years free agency, and Sanchez improves just enough in 2 years to convince the team's new coach and GM to keep him, without him improving enough to demand a real contract.

Good luck with that.

2million dollar raise, and freed up 6mil in this years cap. not bad job by mr.t

Except his cap number next year grows almost as much as he saves this year and he cannot be cut. He has a $8.25 million guaranteed base salary in 2013. Under his old contract, he had $4.5 million unguaranteed base in 2013. So now he increased the cap in 2013 by almost $4 million and makes him uncuttable if he sucks like he did this past year.

The move wasn't as bad as it was on initial reaction, but the Jets are mortgaging the next two seasons for $6.4 million of cap space. At least $1.25 millon of it will go to the dead money increase of cutting Bart Scott. Another $2 plus million will go to giving Aaron Maybin a first round tender. Then they have to resign Sione Pouha. That freed up cap space will be gone before they can even go out to improve the team in free agency.

You're kidding right?
You do realize that giving him 2.75 mill MORE and pushing 6 mill into the future means that you created 8.75 mill of future cap hits right?

How can it be a good move to give a raise to a guy who deserves a paycut?

Cam Newton's rookie QBR: 84.5
Dalton's rookie QBR: 80.4
Mark Sanchez' career best QBR: 78.2

According to jetscap had they cut him this season they would have had a dead cap of $5M and a cap savings of $9M.

They converted $8M of his remaining salary to signing bonus. So if they cut him in 2013 their dead cap will be $8M ($2M remaining from original deal plus $6M+ from this restructure) plus his $8.25M in guaranteed 2013 salary they will still have to pay him so a cap hit of $17M to be gone. Which essentially means no matter what he does this season they can't get rid of him now before 2014.

To celebrate his contract extension, Mark Sanchez will be taking his girlfriend to Chuck-E-Cheese.

What this really means for the Jets is just more of the same. They have cap space now to sign their rookies and there own FA plus maybe get a few low end cheaper FA's. They don't get any better out of this deal and instead of being able to blow it up next year and re-starting they have to wait 2 full seasons.

The reason the Jets fans love this deal is that they are used to mediocrity.

The Jets could have bitten a one year bullet, and cut loose of Holmes while not renegotiating with Sanchez. Instead, they've got both players with guaranteed money next year, meaning the players will be back or the Jets will get some nice dead money numbers going in 2013.

Again, thanks Tanny!

this has to be some kind of conspiracy, there's no way they're this dumb. Sanchez is the most overrated backup QB of all times.

As soon as the Jets knew they weren't going to be in the Manning Sweepstakes, they announced a contract extension with Mark Sanchez. The deal, which at first appeared mystifyingly outrageous because he might be just another guy, is actually a good deal for the team -- if you hold out much hope he's going to be a franchise quarterback. The Jets added three reasonably priced seasons to his contract in 2014 through 2016 in exchange for guaranteeing his money this year and next, and adding $2.75 million to it. If you assume he's not getting cut in either of the next two years, GM Mike Tannenbaum did a smart thing, because he lowered Sanchez's cap number in the process -- $6.4 million of it, according to Profootballtalk.com.

It is only a good deal for the team if Sanchez actually gets much better. If not, it was a bad deal. Not as bad as most of us initially thought, but they are stuck with him until at least 2014 like it or not.

Jets fans keep on comparing him to Eli Manning (I don't see it). If he does a Eli type turnaround, it is a great deal. If he continues to be Mark Sanchez, it was a mistake. Not as big of one as I initially though, but still a mistake.

Jets just agreed to terms with Pohua today. I thought he was a very good NT last year and was hoping he would be a cap casualty.

Don't forget, they also created dead cap where none previously existed, so if they cut him after 2014 he will still hit their cap as dead cap.

Here is how jason at jetscap represents the deal against the cap:

New York Jets Salary Cap- Mark Sanchez

The financial part of the deal can be construed as a good thing for the Jets but if Sanchez is as mediocre as he appears to be and they stick with him then it's a bad deal no matter what he is getting paid. Gotta love it.

The Jets' next opportunity to be a good football team will be after Sanchez is jettisoned and they theoretically manage to bring in a good NFL quarterback. This contract just delayed the possibility of that happening by at least two more years.

Dunno how any Jets fan can spin that as a good thing, but I'm sure they've found a way. It's likely tied to denial of the fact that Sanchez isn't going to suddenly become good.
