I've Seen Enough of Drake Maye...

I hope his performance in DC caused Washington staff and fans to quietly wonder if they made the right choice of Daniels over Maye.

I know I wouldn’t trade Maye for Daniels.
Too early to make that assessment. It maye feel that way but games need to be played.

One of my multiple pet peeves regarding acquiring talent over the last 5 years (but actually longer), is how we've not acquired and developed a true and solid Center to step in if Andrews got injured, or what we have now (an Andrews that even if he stays healthy has just maybe one season left after this). Andrews was an UDFA and has been solid since he became the starter. Not only will we need a Stud LT in the off-season, but also a Center and LG (and that's hoping that Wallace becomes the answer at RT). I've been truly impressed with Maye's progress. He gives me the impression of not just being a Legit #QB, but has true Franchise QB potential. However, if the OL isn't addressed by next off-season, the kid is going to metaphorically get killed. I like what I've seen from Douglas and Polk (and Baker has legit talent, but just needs to get seasoning). We'll be drafting very high next year and there will be FA's who will still be in their Mid-20's (especially on Defense), which is how we could fill some holes, especially on the DL. There will also be at least one young swing tackle type (Walker Little), and maybe another we can nab. Let's just use this season to see which young players are worth bringing along to rebuild the franchise. I know that's not what some fans want to hear, but it's just being realistic.
I thought Froholdt was going to be a good one (Center). He started 17 games for Arizona last year.

Who is the villain in all this? First, there are the failures of late-career Bill Belichick, particularly his failures as GM, but also his foolish dereliction re Mac. Second (and more currently) there is the failure of the new regime to do a better job providing an O-line with at least minimal competence. That they have failed to do. The QB conundrum is a direct result of that failure, and is the reason Drake Maye's development will have to be backburnered for the time being.

The offensive line is atrociously bad. You put Maye back there and you are asking for concussions and ruining his development by forcing him to develop bad habits. Once Mac started hearing footsteps it was over for him. I know Drake has higher upside and physical attributes than Mac ever did, but I would like to give him a chance to succeed first which starts with competent OL play. We don't have that. The preseason has made that weakness abundantly clear.

The real reason to start him now is the get the mistakes behind him and grow his experience to accelerate his development.
He would be better in his first game if you wait to play him. But he will be better in that game, whenever it is, if you start him now.
Yeah only push back I'd have is that the Oline could get him killed.

At least he can “run for his life”!!

I thought Strange would move over there when the time came but he might never play again.

Hard to say after a preseason game. I wasn’t able to watch the game and hearing Maye played well is obviously good to hear, but I won’t be sold until I see in season success. With that said, I’m hoping we start Maye over Jacoby.

I was wrong.

I recall there was a time when we had two quality starting caliber Centers during the BB Era. I'm just at a loss to recall the names of the two Centers. Perhaps someone on here might recall their names and when they were on the team.

i'd go back to 2015, when bryan stork and david andrews were handling the snaps... Andrews had a capable back up in Ted Karras in the intervening years... before Andrews, the best center we had in the BB era was Dan Koppen... and Koppen was a really good center... one of the best... under rated player

Mayo is not impressing me.

BB is a tough act to follow, and the team is not overloaded with talent, but this is a tough gig to learn on the job.
i gotta agree, though right now is just the dog and pony show leading up to the season... we'll see how Coach Mayo handles the ins and outs of the year... we should know pretty quickly whether or not he's got the elusive "it" factor as a HC...

my biggest complaint so far is that he's not polished when it comes to dealing with the media, and sometimes says stuff he has to later walk back... not a good look... hopefully he learns that he doesn't need to provide a detailed answer for every question asked, and that sometimes its okay to say nah, can't answer that one just yet...

that will work for a short spell... but eventually those linebackers will catch up...

Yep. I think Maye’s progress might be hindered if he is dead.

This is the kind of forward thinking you just don't get anywhere else. It's a big part of why I keep coming back here.

Well... that, the uplifting motivational posts from @captain stone and the free cookies.
Really, if @Ian just added complimentary whiskey I could just hang here 24/7/365

Just reacting to how he is handling this issue. Not condemning him. “Seems like” is pretty tame criticism.

Waffling already and making conflicting comments on the QBs, his entire answers about the penalties and the OL, his statement now that he doesn’t want to be a players coach.
So far his public persona sounds like a guy over his head.

Why would I have an agenda? I want him to succeed. What agenda could I possibly have against him?
I dunno. A lot of posters here unfortunately do have agendae, as you know.
Maybe you don't.
It's too early for me to say "jobs too big for him". The dude hasn't even coached a single reg season game yet.
A little slack should be cut.
Give him some time to make mistakes and correct them.
