I'm hearing rumors on Indy message boards- Peyton to IR

Per King, PFT, and Mort (ESPN)--

There has not been any kind of surgery or procedure scheduled for Manning..."as of yet."

It does not appear as though he will go for game 1, but I don't see any way in the world that they send him to IR, as some have suggested (including the title of the thread)

Even if he misses a couple/few games, they'll keep him on the roster. Hell, even if he misses 1/2 the season they'll keep him on the roster.

Anyway, all of this IR talk/new procedure stuff is off-base, at least as of right this minute. I am sure that we'll find out more in the upcoming days/wks.

Mort: No new procedure on Peyton’s neck, “as of now” | ProFootballTalk

Could this be the latest "gate"??

Neckgate 2011...

You're right, I'm sure it's pretty much all we hear about in the next week or two

Told him not to lick those oreos like that...

I think Collins is better than Sanchez.

)
Collins is also almost 39 years old. Part of Manning's success is making reads and delivering the ball so quickly, he's sacked less often. I just don't see Collins picking up that complex offense and avoiding the sacks behind that offensive line. Sooner or later they have to bring Painter in ( since they cut Orlovsky)if Collins gets hurt and Manning gets IRed. If you saw Painter at all in pre-season, he's not winning 8 games or even 4.....

Peytie has his consecutive start streak weighing heavily on him...it's very very important that HE keep HIS streak intact...the ad revenue possibilities post career could be staggering...imagine...the Energizer Bunny being sh!tcanned for Durapeyton, the duracell destroyer...and then there's the 48 hour continuous pain reliever commercial possibilities...

...hi, it's me...Peyton...you know, I've had a pain in my neck for years that just won't go away...won't go away that is until NOW...I just take two Oxyperms (with real imitation oxycodone) and watch that pain just melt away...like the dreams of a second Super Bowl win...

....or how about Ezy-Straw?....

yup...me again...if you have a stiff neck like I do and find it frustrating trying to drink a glass of water, you need Ezy-Straw...it's flexible neoprene and moldable plastic stem will give you a lifetime of easy liquid refreshment from ANY position of your neck and spine...look, here I am in upside down traction with rigid steel bolts drilled into my skull...see that?...like I was back on the field sucking down Gatorade and sulking on the sideline...AND, for the first 100 callers to 1-800- MOONHEAD, you'll also get a free Ezy-Swatter....perfect for swatting those pesky flies off your forehead...believe me, Peyton Manning, this is one item you will be GLAD you own....so don't delay, call NOW...and tell 'em Peytie sent ya'...

They interviewed him during the Colts-Pack game on August 26th. He had to crane his neck to talk to the sideline reporter and looked not to want to move much while speaking, but I would expect he wouldn't even do that form of interview with serious neck discomfort (he could do the interview in the booth and look straight ahead).

I would be flat out amazed if he misses a game, let alone goes to IR. This just feels like deja vu with the 2008 bursa sac procedure that caused him to miss that preseason. Much like Favre, I cannot see him sitting and giving up his consecutive game streak if he can physically step foot on the field. He actually mentioned he had never missed a game in his career during that preseason interview, so I doubt that happens now.

And I, too, want him on the field. Beating a pathetic Colts team sans Manning brings no delight.

*Side effects may include the sudden urge to throw things under moving objects, irrational need to blame on liquored up kickers, paranoia that others may be listening to you in enclosed spaces, and giving up crucial interceptions at the worst moments. Should any of these symptoms occur consult you're agent and sign a $100m contract before disclosing them with anyone else.

MMQB has more detail on the Manning "situation". Basically that nerve is still not regenerating to the extent it should have several weeks ago. He can't throw with the velocity he needs or throw as much as he normally would be. And now Manning is developing back pain, first experienced on Saturday and worse on Sunday. That could be as simple as when you are favoring one thing something else is being tweeked in the process. They are apparently consulting several additional experts today and tomorrow, which is probably what has triggered the assumption/rumor that another procedure could be on the horizen. Polian is denying any knowledge of a pending additional procedure, but his denial also smacks of plausible denial at the moment (because no decision has been made pending visits with additional experts).

I do think week 1 is looking dimmer and dimmer for Peyton. And the timing could not have been worse for him being activated off of PUP less than a week ago.

Really odd thing even for the stepford fans over on Coltfreaks...no thread about the latest rumors...

Denial isn't just a river in Egypt.

If I lived in Indy, I'd start to watch out for increased alcohol-related anger issues too.

Shefter has now tweeted that the Colts will have some sort of announcement about Manning's status for week 1 by noon today...

Actually...... from the sounds of it..... it might be better if he were able to "have another procedure" if that would in fact fix it. Hearing the latest rumors, I'm not sure that's the case.

Nerve regeneration is a tricky thing. Some times, you expect to get it back, some times you don't. There is no predicable course. Perhaps scar tissue generated instead, which would hinder your recovery. Sounds as if there is a crapload of uncertainty as to why he's not healing, AND THAT IS NOT A GOOD THING in medicine.

It's my experience if you have a predicted injury/surgery/condition that gets treated.... All is fine IF/AND ONLY IF you follow the typical course of recovery. When you don't, and the doctors start shrugging their shoulders, that is a very bad thing.

I worry for his career at this point. Will he ever make it all the way back? He's 13-14 weeks post surgery on a procedure that has an expected recovery time of 6-8 weeks, and it doesn't look like he is close to returning.

I just hope it gets done correctly, so the problem won't be exacerbated. I hope he can play this year, as I think good competition is healthy, but I also hope it doesn't linger after football and affect his quality of life.

Exactly. I was injured in a helo accident that fractured 3 vertebra and damaged the nerves in both legs. I still have never recovered the nerves on the left side of my left foot, and the two larger toes on my right and part of the area behind them. Still numb and not likely to ever be fixed.

I cannot believe he was de-PUPped when they suspecting it wasn't healing right. All this for a streak? He must be crazy. Let it heal right, Peyton!

On another note last night I had a dream I was being chased by a big-headed zombie who chased me to my parents' house because they had dandelions growing through their carpet.(?) That's the last time I read a Peyton thread before bed.

If this truly a "nerve " problem then it's very dangerous and they (Indy) wouldn't want Manning to even take a hit up high..nerves do not heal, I'm a paralegic and lost the use of both legs because of nerve problems so if it's truly a nerve issue then things are kinda scary for Peyton. If it's a nerve thing then it may take up to 6 six weeks, but then again this sounds like BB all over.. not givin out any info to others esp. when the whole thing is wrapped up really tight and no one I know is writing about it with any real idea on what it invovles

I think they really had little choice. He was progressing somewhat at the time and they didn't want to lose him for 6 weeks if he could be back in 1 or 2. This weekend his back started to act up, perhaps a result of increasing his workload or the effect of the continuing nerve issue on his mechanics or maybe he picked up the twins the wrong way...

Now a week later he isn't progressing at all, he's regressing to some extent. But he could still rebound and be ready in a couple of weeks so...it is what it is. They won't IR him unless it drags into mid season or the docs decide he does in fact need another procedure to reconfigure the bolts...

Nerves do heal provided they don't degenerate beyond repair. Age,nature of injury, how long he waited to have it treated are just some of the factors.
