If PSU gets the Death Penalty What Happens to O'Brien?

:confused2:

Every bit as much as the question, I'd say.
Your ability to condescend is second to none. Rather than acting like an arrogant board master, given your apparent legal knowledge why don't you educate those of us who are discussing a subject offering different propositions. It would be welcomed.

I wonder Deus...would you be so vociferous if this was the 17th century and you heard Marie Antoinette say "Let them eat cake" ...would you tell the crowd surrounding the Bastille later on..."you people are displaying a mob mentality...shut up!"...?

Of course, the irony of your post here is that, in regards to the post you just quoted, I responded in the same vein as you had responded to my post.

Deus, provide a reasonable response to the question provided. You can leave your holier than thou approach elsewhere. I don't care for it.

Are you suggesting that we have a revolution and overthrow the lawful U.S. government because you don't like the way this situation has been handled so far? If not, there really aren't any similarities to work with. Also, Antoinette didn't actually say that.

Deus, provide a reasonable response to the question provided.

I did.

There was nothing holier-than-thou about it, and your initial response to mine got the response it deserved. You're itching for a fight. Go find it somewhere else.

No, you didn't.

I've asked you to provide a response as to why the NCAA shouldn't be able to address the PSU case given what I've proposed as special consideration. You haven't adressed that or simply refuse to do so.

I believe the NCAA should be able to amend their scope (within reason) to deal with issues as such. The NCAA bylaws, constitution, administration etc should be able to change with the times and address issues as such. I'm not denigrating the justice system as that process should occur on its own.

If the NCAA can't police their own constituents (in any way shape or form), then what is the point of having the NCAA? If it's not the NCAA, then it should be an independent arm. If not that arm then who? It's passing the buck.

Deus, the issue is not with me, it is with you.

***edit***

Don't worry Deus, I've read back through the thread. That'll do.

so...Rousseau made the whole quote up.. a post medieval urban legend....I guess we're going to be held to the strict letter of the law here,eh?...OK...how about

In Chinese culture, there is (attributed to Emperor Hui of Jin by the book Zizhi Tongjian) a similar story that involves rice and meat, instead of bread and cake: "an ancient Chinese emperor who, being told that his subjects didn't have enough rice to eat, replied, 'Why don't they eat meat?'".

would you tell the rabble to be vegetarian at the emperor's bonfire later on?

No bowl games for BoB for a few years. Not unexpected, I guess.

They are keeping Joe Pa's name on the library...as a reminder to keep quiet....

Listened live, but here's what I took out of it:

Sanctions issued for Penn State: A $60 million fine, which is equal to one year football revenue. This monies will be used to set up a charity to help victims of sexual abuse. No bowls for 4 years, scholarships reduced in the same for year period from 25 to 15. Players may transfer immediately and be eligible to play. NCAA also vacates all Penn State wins 1998-2011, which will make Bobby Bowden the winningest coach in NCAA Div I. The school is under probation for 5 years, and the NCAA reserves the right to investigate further once criminal proceedings have concluded.

Wow, Penn State got absolutely hammered.

No bowl games for four years, loss of scholarships, 60 million dollar fine, no penalty in players transferring. A one or two year death penalty looks pretty good right about now.

O'Brien is screwed if he stays. No big time recruits are going to want to play there with the four year bowl ban.

$60M fine = one year of total football program revenue to be used to establish a program to benefit sexual assault victims
4 year Bowl ban
Scholarships reduced from 24 to 15 for 4 years
Any student can leave and play immediately elsewhere and any student who remains can retain all former aid
1998-2011 record vacated
5 year probationary period with integrity monitors program implemented
4 years of independent integrity monitor oversight
No individual penalties for former or present coaches until the conclusion of all criminal proceedings, but right reserved to penalize them individually
Did not feel independent NCAA investigation warranted due to scope of criminal trial investigation they had access to as well as Freeh report. NCAA could never have conducted as thorough an investigation.

Penn State accepted the Freeh report and entered a consent agreement with NCAA on these penalties so there will be no appeals.

BoB is effectively screwed collateral damage, a caretaker HC tasked with rebuilding culture from the ground roots up where winning football games cannot come first at any expense. Morons like our old pal Breer are now crowing about OSU picking up some titles... Maybe culture change should be imposed on them all...

He should bail on them. I'm sure the school told him that the football staff was innocent of any wrongdoing. They lied to him. He should bail on the school based on that alone. Staying could be career suicide.

He can't bail due to his contract. $4M penalty on a $5M deal he hasn't seen a hardly a nickle of to date. He only got the job because no one else wanted it. His only options were to interview for the JAGS job...which isn't much better and he probably wasn't getting anyway. He wanted to be a HC and he got what he wanted. He can become something of a folk hero himself if he guts it out for three years the greater good. Best he can hope for going forward is a 2 year coordinators job in the low to mid six figure range where he could be axed in a year like Josh, so not much to bail to.

Best snappy twitter comment to date from Prisco (as a come back to the WE ARE chants Paterno led on his lawn the day he was fired...). You were Penn State...

Don't get me started on the name thing. That was absurd, and the NCAA should have been dissolved the moment they even talked about implementing that. But at least that had a tenuous link to the actual sports, given that the names would be there for all to see at every game. Even that thin a tie is absent here.

Again, forgive my complete ignorance in this realm - but, who is going to stop the NCAA from handing out these punishments? You say it is not in their purview - OK, but what body can stop them from setting this precedence?

What is the point of vacating past wins?

I've never heard of such a thing, then again I don't follow college football.

Happens quite a bit in college sports, mostly for cheating.

The NCAA probably didn't want a pedophile enabler as the winnginest coach in the history of college football.

Happens all of the time. Not so much in football but in basketball. The NCAA has vacated wins on a number of teams.
