Hi to all the Pats Fans.
i am from Hamburg (Germany) an following the Patriots back to the mid 80s and this board now for over than 3 years.
It was a hard time to watch any american football in germany in the `80s. like gilbert, i saw the game first on german/english television (tele 5 and sky) in 1986 on sky. That was the time of tatupa, duppard, morgan, eason and a fresh"fryar".

here is my vote for gilberts draft so far:

dein 1st runden pick mit manny war grossartig.
your 1st pick was more than great. one word - MANNNNNNNNNY -

also ich denke, dass dein 2nd round pick nicht der beste fuer unser team war.
vielleicht haettest du einen TE/WR nehmen sollen/koennen, weil auch graham naechstes jahr auslaeuft und unser WR corp bsiher nicht dominant aussieht.

i don`t like this 2nd round pick at all. "Joseph Addai, RB, LSU" maybe he is a good fit for the future, but i prefer a pick like CB like Minter/Marschall or a "new" TE/WR like Klopfenstein (is he german ?) or Hagan. i think a guy like Hagan could help our team in the next season more than Addai. (cause of dillon and faulk).

ich wuensche dir weiterhin ein gutes haendchen im draft (ala BB) und bin auf deine updates gespannt.

Actually, I saw number 9 play towards the end of his career. He didn't do a lot of running around but he still had the most amazing way of (apparently) hanging in the air waiting for a header. Wasn't a very tall guy either.

I think you're being hard on poor Gilbert. Sure, we have Dillon and Faulk, but they're not getting younger and someone who can spell them now and take over in the future is a big need for the team.

I'm inclined to agree with Riot, Addai might be nice, but there are more pressing needs in the second round. I like the Klopfenstein suggestion (good Japanese name that), but CB in the second or Hagan would be unwise. And even liking Klopfenstein, there are other depth concerns to be addressed that would be better targeted, such as OT or WR (Mike Hass or Brandon Marshall - Hagan was been dropping too many balls in the postseason).

Welcome PatRiot, nice to have someone flanking those rascally British posters, they won't behave any better, but we can hope they will have less time for mischief if we have them surrounded.

And now for football.

I don't think that WR is just a plug-and-play position but, that said, there do seem to have been some talented WRs who have been in camp but haven't made the team (Bryant, Jennings, belatedly, Childress). Perhaps that is the sort of guy they're banking on. Given the relationship between demand and supply for WRs this year, I'd be surprised if we took one so early. But what do I know?

The gap between Bill's cunning master-plan and my understanding of it has got very wide indeed with what is happening at wide receiver. I could stomach the loss of Davis, just about, but Dwight and Givens were very painful.

From the little I know, it sounds like a very good pick. Did you think about Maurice Drew (an RB who is also a hot return man would be appealing)? Thanks for your efforts.

P.S. Gilbert sure could put away those Currywursts, coulnd't he?

currywursts are ok, but gilbert-burger fits much better for the gravedigger of course i thought about maurice drew. i would have add him with my first 3rd rounder, if i didn´t take addai here. he has also great speed and good returning abilities, but i don´t think he´s worth a second round pick.

i think the o-line is ok right now. i think the best position to land quality players in later round is o-line. i have one in my mind for the second 4th rounder.

(Though, I must admit using T-shirt, and the two Nuts for "counter" intelligence does seem to be a double negative.) A second or third round WR shouldn't be selected for plug and play (too many reads, too much QB/WR chemistry to build), but should be selected for the skill set they bring to 3, 4, 5, & 6 on the depth chart, not to mention Practice Squad, with the focus on production/fit in year two and three.

The "receivers" breakdown isn't as shaky as one might think.

If you think about a 'dime' defense - 6 DBs, 1-2 LBs - Branch draws a double team (2 DB), #2 gets 1 (DB), #3 gets 1 (DB), Watson/Graham draws a double team (LB/DB), and 1 Safety is deep cover. That leaves 1 LB for Faulk/Pass/Evans. If Caldwell is capable of a minimal performance as interim #2, you tie up a CB and S deep with his speed, Branch sucks defenders in like a black hole, and Watson clears out the middle on a seam route or crossing pattern, Faulk/Pass are open for a nice gain with a 4 man pass rush. And that assumes Brown has lost so much that 1 nickel/dime CB covers him like a blanket.

Remember both Faulk and Pass were considered for WR at one point, they can line up in the slot and be productive. One rookie WR who can run a precise route, use his body to shield out the defender(s), and aggressively go for the ball can be productive in Charlie's system, not to mention the help they'll get from that guy in the pocket. This is why Hass and Brandon Marshall are my 1 & 2 targets, they get open through body position as much as movement, and they are aggressive towards that ball.

Positive thinking is so much easier when you think about match-ups vs numbers and names. One solid rookie possession WR, mixed with whomever BB has acquired for veteran depth by training camp, is going to give Tommy a fighting chance.

Optimism is easy! The Pats have so far exceeded anything I expected of them that I will be happy with whatever they give us from now on.

But that doesn't mean that I think they're going 16-0 next season. As you say, WRs need to learn the system and Branch + Brown + Johnson as the only three who know it strikes me as pretty thin. Even if Caldwell turns out to be very talented and we draft a good young receiver, that doesn't change.
