How Will Josh McDaniels and the Patriots Offense Use Phillip Dorsett?

Steve Balestrieri

Dorsett, like Brandin Cooks, has 4.33 speed in the 40. He also ran a 6.70 time in the 3-Cone Drill so he has the short area quickness as well

One can only wonder but one thing is certain this is the Fastest Patriots Offense on record. I think even a Good Defensive Team like Denver should have problems with this current group. That said Dorsett with his speed is not limited I see alot of Clear outs which should open up the come back route. Also with the Safeties playing back I can see McDaniels adding the Dig Route to our route tree it should be open with the spacing.

With the reported signing of WR/PR Demarcus Ayers to the PS, I could see BB putting Mitchell, who is having issues with his knee, on short term IR and adding Ayers to handle PR duties. He was considered the top PR candidate with the Steelers earlier.

First of all I think they traded for a WR.
People are assuming he will do punt and kickoff return duties out of nowhere, just like everybody assumed Browner would play safety just because they signed Revis a few days earlier and the player and BB said he would play CB.

I think speed is a big part of those duties but those are specialist positions as BB said many times, he hasn't done that in a while. Kickoff I think we can expect to have an easier learning curve but punt is a whole different thing.

I still think Burkhead is going to feature in the punt return game. He has the skill set as a receiving back and he is likely to be underutilized outside of special teams so I think he gets tried in a number of special teams roles including punt return if needed

Dorsett had 36 receptions in his last year at Miami, 10 of which went the distance at a 24.2 yds clip. This was ACC, not the Sun Belt. I think they'll find a role for him, or at least I hope they do because there will be blood if he fits like a glove.

I think we are all in the position of speculating about the contributions that Dorsett will bring. Myself, I am encouraged for the long term because of what Lombardi wrote about his hands (they are good) and what Steve wrote about watching film on him with the Colts. Though a lot will depend on how he adapts to this system, because we know it's not for everyone one. Even good WR's from other systems have failed to make it here.

I think Dorsett is more of a long term move than an immediate one. Short term he will be merely depth which is needed, given Amendola and Mitchell's injury history. I don't see him as a PR option, though KR could be a possibility. The Pats will have plenty of time to ease him into the offense, so baring injury, I don't think we will see much of him before mid to late October.

He's certainly an intriguing asset. I hope people keep their expectations low for these first couple of months.

BTW- has BB or any other coach ever mentioned that DA is on a "pitch count", or is that meme merely a mediot speculation that has become fact?? According to many at TC, Amendola has looked as healthy and quick as he's been since before his groin injury his first year here.

As long as Dorsett has a good attitude and works hard, he will be fine here. I'm more interested in what they do with Mitchell considering his injury. It sounded like he wouldn't be good to go for a while.

side questions: I know Lucien was waived/injured, any chance its not season ending and he can come back at some point?

The pitch count is a figment of the imagination of all the posters who want players to sit out of football. We have heard in addition to calls to sitting players with HFA on the line sitting out Gronk or Lewis for the whole season so they are healthy for the playoffs.
It's the fantasy football effect.
Amendola plays as much as his ability and the game plan warrants. He isn't sitting out because BB believes he is too weak for the NFL and will get hurt if he plays football.

He would have to get an injury settlement then sit out the expected length of the injury plus 6 weeks. So very unlikely.

Mitchell is back at practice in full participation.

There was a definite lack of chemistry with Andrew Luck, there were several instances where Dorsett seemed to be open and Luck was forcing the ball into coverage elsewhere. Was it a lack of trust?

He will need to earn his stripes. Hopefully this is not an issue here.

Well he needs to run sharper routes. He was raw when it came to that. I hope he can thrive under this system. We have seen wrs with blazing speed and some have been bust. Chad Jackson was the perfect example here.

Huh, Chad Jackson had BLAZING speed??? IDK that I remember him that way.

Possible

Very unlikely

My question is why?

For depth, especially if Mitchell isn't 100%
