And it's this kind of stuff that would make me crazy if I were a fan of another team.

Bill Belichick isn't going to pay a DT that much. CB, DE, QB, LT, these are the prime positions. And on other teams, WR. But you're paying up for DTs, LBs, RBs and Guards?

Vince Wilfork is like...damn.

When I watch he is a beast. That is a lot of money.

Bill made Vince Wilfork the highest paid NT in the NFL. He’d pay Vea if he thought he’d fit in here.

Vita Vea sounds like a high protein drink. He will be Very Very rich

Um… a great DT is much better than a great DE…

no qb can deal with pressure up the middle
Other than Donald, is there a prototype DE that pressures QBs? Not Vea. Vea is great because he controls the line of scrimmage, but the pressure is coming from the edges. Donald is different--he's not there to plug up the middle. I'd have no problem paying a Donald or a Seymour, etc.

Vea pushes the pocket with some frequency. And his 4 sacks this season are more than Wilfork ever achieved in one campaign. He has 11.5 sacks in 4 years. Wilfork, in his entire 13 year career, totaled 16.

Terrible take. Beyond terrible. Vita Vea is the reason Shaq Barrett gets all those sacks…he collapses the pocket and is a force in the middle. Do you really not see how blowing up the line helps DEs? He’s the most important player on that defense. The team is completely different without him. Very similar to the Wilfork effect.

DE as a prime position? Lol…sure, buddy. I’m sure you argued that Wilfork and Hightower were great values and Chandler Jones types weren’t, for all these years, until Bill signed Judon. And you know what? They were good values.

The positions you listed, by the way:

DT - Wilfork was the highest paid DT in the league; Seymour was listed as DE but in that 3-4 was a big run stuffer…also highest paid.

LB - Big bucks for Mayo, Hightower, and others.

G - Mankins was the highest paid G in the NFL…Patriots have paid top dollar numerous times for others.

I did not know the exact numbers (thanks Deus), but watching Vea I would have said that Vea does more than "push the pocket". Vea collapses the pocket regularly commanding a double team. Maybe not as disruptive as Donald, but very disruptive. I love the guy. But again a high 1st round pick which we never have.

It isn't that much money considering where the new contracts are coming in due to the adjusted 2022 cap. These are all extensions before players hit FA.

TJ Watt - 28M
Darius Leonard - 20M
Marlon Humphrey, Marshon Lattimore - 19.5M (each)
Fred Warner - 19M
Jonathan Allen - 18M (DT like Vea)
Vita Vea - 18M
Jamal Adams - 17.5M

People are going to have to adjust their expectations…free agents this year will set the bar higher than we’re used to. The Patriots likely won’t let JC Jackson hit the market, as he would be over $20M annually.

It should also be made clear that Vea's deal, whatever the actual numbers (and not the agent hype) turn out to be, doesn't kick in until after next season, as the team had already picked up his 5th year.

If that were the case DTs would get more sacks.
By the way Vea has 11.5 of them in his 4 year career so I don’t think your comment applies to hit.

Also, a guy like Vea is so valuable on short yardage and red zone.

I always thought that was Bill’s secret sauce on defense. Control the middle of the field with dominant interior guys who stuff the run and push the line. Get a shutdown corner. Now, when teams get close to the goal line, their options are slim. They can’t run on you, and they don’t have a mismatch WR/CB advantage. People called it “bend don’t break” but I always thought it was more about the personnel/cap decisions. There was often criticism about the lack of big time pass rushers, but those guys aren’t as important in RZ and short yardage.

It doesn’t have to be a DT either. A MLB or versatile OLB is essential too.

This is a joke, right?

Chandler Jones is awesome. I'd rather have Jones 20x over what Hightower has given. Mankins? That was a big mistake.

I mean, Chandler was tossed because he was running around nude out of his mind in public. If not for that, he'd be here.

I'm wondering what you're smoking. You're out of your mind.

Chandler Jones would have contributed more than the green dot for 3 super bowl winning defenses?????

Right......
