Gronk Update

I believe it was also RG3's 2nd ACL tear on the knee. Gronk also suffered his injury several weeks earlier, which inherently gives him more time to recover.

I also think that losing off season workouts are more detrimental to a QB entering his 2nd year than to Gronk.

Yes, it was RG3's second ACL tear so that's huge. Also, RG3 may not be 100% but most of his crappy play this year has to do with him just not being part of a good organization and not demonstrating that he can be a decent pocket passer.

I was wondering why folks said he wouldn't be ready for the start of 2014 in the first place. Lindsey Von had a Tibial Plateau Fracture, means the top of your tibia is broken and the acl usually get trashed, and she's back on ski's 8 months later. I had a TPF, see avatar and was back riding dirt bikes in 5 months (my acl tore off the bone). Point is acl surgery isn't terrible these days, a guy like Andrews will have him back running in 5 months.

Everyone worries about infection but that's a crap shoot, I had one first time for surgery but second time nothing so you just don't know. I think they will follow certain protocols for this surgery, testing for mrsa prior to surgery, pre-surgery antibiotics etc., probably lovenox shots after surgery for a couple weeks. I bet gronk is fine.

I'm not a pro athlete but after 5 major surgeries in 3 years I have a pretty good idea on this stuff, dirt bikes are fun but painful sometimes

People shouldn't be worried about the infection part...just becasue he got one in his arm...doesn't mean he will get it or have a greater chance to get it in his knee.

I kid, I kid!

Wax - WTF is that LOL LMAO....

What about Vollmer? Any news?

I'm curious if they did the standard procedure to glue the bone naturally or used screws and other hardware.

this injury is so tricky to guess when he'll be back and and how effective he'll be when does come back. revis just recently admitted his knee is still not 100% after his acl injury. granted he is a bit older than gronk, but just have to temper expectations for next year.

In before: "They should just hold Gronk out until week 17 then give him 4 snaps to knock the rust off before the playoffs!"

I like the pats to just use him in the redzone only.

Actually, it would be after 2015. He has an option bonus 2015 for $10 million that the Pats don't have to pick up. Unless they get a first round pick for him after next season or he has another major injury, there is zero chance he won't be on the roster in 2015.

Two years is a long time in the NFL. This is such a non-story.

CBs and WRs usually take longer to return from an ACL than other players. It is the nature of their positions. A CB needs to make a lot of cuts and pivots more than a TE.

Does any other team repeatedly have reporters speculate about how players are going to leave?

I know Welker left, but Wilfork didn't. Brady didn't. Mankins didn't. The Patriots were also supposed to lose both TEs (ha, ha) because they could only afford one.

We've seen articles written about all these scenarios, and only in one case did a player leave.

Meanwhile, the Indy Colts lost Peyton Manning, Reggie Wayne, Dallas Clark, Dwight Freeney, and the discussions were muted in all these cases. Prior to Peyton's injury, when he had just as much time left on his contract as Brady, there was no talk of his leaving.

Gronks injuries have veen pretty freak accidents though...breaking your arm on a pat and then breaking it again in the playoffs on a freak landing.

Then tearing his acl when a defender goes helmet first into his knee. Those could happen to anyone.

Kind of rediculous to speculate 2 hlyears from now. Geonk is 24 and plays a position that doesnt require sudden cuts. I think hell return next season just as good as before

That's because most of the media thought peyton's career was over.

The market for Gronkowski after the 2014 season will be interesting to see. The poor guy takes such big hits and has this back issue since college. He's a tough player to sign to a large signing bonus if he's going to be a part timer. Gronk can renegotiate the 2016-2019.

LaCanfora is making a good point, but he may stay if the Patriots are competitive. Gronk won't get a franchise tag after 2015, so his best bet is to move on if they agree not to excercise the 2015 option. It looks like a Welker situation to me with a depressed market for his services, and whether he gets good advice from his agents and family.

Gronk is such a lovable lug, he should maximize his advertising opportunities like Dunkin' Donuts. He's got that Shaq type persona that could continue to pay off after he decides he can't handle another surgery.

On Welker, the Patriots are starting to look better by staying disciplined with their offer. I still wish he'd signed the 2011 deal that would have paid him more and kept him here.

Its 2 years away. His health in 14 and 15 will control the decision, not his health in 12 and 13.

It's because we manage the cap better thanmost and usually keep the players we want to and let go the players on the downhill side.

Teams that mismanage the cap and are forced to purge some good players in their prime don't make for good stories.

Man bites dog.

I would challenge anyone to come up with a player we wanted in their prime we were forced to cut without adequate compensation due to cap mismanagement. I can't think of one. Welker? Seymour drew a 1st that was likely to be higher than we actually got, so a good gamble, and he's retired.
