Greg Bedard seems to think the Pats may be making a blockbuster trade soon

This post had me thinking. What about a backdoor trade agreement.

The Browns draft Hunter and once June 1st comes they trade Hunter and Watson for 2nd rd pick. They finally get to dump Watson's contract.

First off, there is basically zero chance Kraft would pay $90M to a known sex pest, especially given the massive spending spree they went on this offseason.

Moreover, even if they wanted to, there is literally no chance that the Patriots could do this without sending whoever they draft in the first round back to CLE. There's a rookie allotment within the salary cap. That amount is determined by the picks a team uses in the draft, not the players a team ends up with. They'd have to fit an extra $8.4M into their allotment, so to sign Hunter they'd have to then ditch the entire rest of their rookie class.

That would be a shocking trade, but an interesting one to point out. The Chargers OL has been a problem for years and they could have two elite T to protect Herbert. It would be idiotic for LA to trade him just after they've nailed to high T picks.

Yeah I just looked it up. They do have a ton cap space next year but only 26 players under contract. Doesn’t mean they can’t sign Slater and still have over $100M. For some reason I thought Slater and the team were miles apart and he was open to a trade.
Oh well. Onto something else huge

I’d love it but realistically there’s no incentive for the Chargers to move Slater. He’s a stud LT, young, and you need two starting tackles (Alt is the other). Herbert is their franchise QB and he’ll be well protected as long as Slater and Alt are there. They’ll extend Slater because teams usually don’t let great tackles leave. In general teams don’t let good young known quantities leave unless there is turmoil (attitude, contract dispute, etc.).

Just because it's a supposed 2 player draft outside of Ward, doesn't mean it's worth trading up. It isn't, neither Carter or Hunter are worth extra assets. They just aren't.

The only reason Cam Ward is going #1 overall is because he's a QB. He would have been the 5th QB taken in last year's draft.

I'm not wasting draft capital to trade up either, but Hunter's not 'the #2 player outside of Ward', he's the best player in the draft, and it's not really close.

If they did do it, I get it.
