Greg Bedard: Pats coaching staff already at a troubling crossroads

There was just a huge hurricane that tore up North Carolina… BB’s fault.
He failed to tell the citizens it was a state of emergency and evacuate. Didn't want to take the advice of his advisors! Went what his gut!! So wolf had to get elected.

I agree.. but wolf has final say on the roster. RK knew Vrabel wouldn't agree to this set up.

Vrabel has a good relationship with RKK. He probably would be the Pats HC had Kraft not shot himself (and the franchise) in the foot by contractually promising the job to Mayo before BB even left. Titans controlling owner Amy Strunk is beyond clueless.

Nice try. Tennessee was fourth overall offensively in 2020. That slipped to 15th in 2021 but they still made the playoffs. The slides in 2022 and last year were directly attributable to Tannehill's health and grooming rookie Levis, yet the rushing attack remained strong throughout.
13th in rushing yards and 16th in yards per rush in 2022
17th in rushing yards and 15th in yards per attempt in 2023
That's a lot closer to average than remaining strong but I digress.

Vrabel like Bill and Mayo is primarily a defensive coach. If we moved on from Bill I would have preferred an offensive-minded coach here over a Bill disciple.
I have no doubt Vrabel would've made the Patriots more competitive this year. The problem was Kraft's premature promise to Mayo and not knowing Vrabel suddenly would become available.
I'll agree to disagree. He showed nothing on a bad Tennessee squad that suggests he'd be any better here right now. Overrated IMO

Lucas has started every game, Lucas has played 162 snaps and Coleman 100. Lucas has played more snaps in every game.
The Washington offense has been a hell of a lot better with him than we have been with our LT. News flash: passably competant is a major upgrade.
Both teams drafted a LT in the 3rd, one decided to find someone else who could play there.
He's played 40, 50, 30, 37. He's 33.

You should also mention that he's been with the Commanders since 2020.
The interior OL gags been just as bad as the Ts.
Injuries will do that to a team.
My concern is why would you think he will spend next year if he didn’t this year? And our spending when truly analyzed (cash AND cap, willingness to pay upfront cash on top players rather than higher one time salaries on lesser or older players) our spending over the last 30 years, we do not spent as much as most teams. Belichick devised a cap strategy to hide that disadvantage as best he could but those days are over.
I don't know that they will, but if they don't, as I said, I'm right there with you. They also did something this year, BB rarely did: they resigned their own, lots of them, which I like a lot.

I despise the idea that a team takes a year to “see what they have”. Building an NFL roster is about evaluating players properly, not putting them in the field to see what you have. Why would we not sign better players to make a better roster and give the good players a chance to perform? Do we really need to lose with Friends U, Verdarian Lowe, Raekwon McMillan, Marcus Wilson, Jacoby brissett, Jaylin Hawkins,Daniel Ekuale etc, etc in order to see what they are? Signing players better than those would have zero negative. We just chose not to.
I don't want Maye out there right now. He's nowhere near set up for success.
If Poll was capable of lighting it up shouldn’t he be a reason we don’t suck? Even if we have pressure 50% of the time, he could make plays the other 50%?
In 4 games he has 8 catches. One for 21 yards and the others were 7,7,6,5,9,0
I mean I understand there are excuses but in 4 games he has 1 catch of more than 10 yard, us averaging less than 8 a catch and his 4 game numbers project to 34 catches for 259 yards.

I mean NKeal Harry averaged more receiving yards per game in his patriot career than that. So it’s hard for me to see superstar out there right now.
Polk is getting open. Brissett isn't getting him the ball.

Lucas is better than anyone we have played there.

Belichick resigned a ton of his own players.

I’m worried about 2025 Maye. He needs to get all the experience he can this year to be better next year. I want him dealing with adversity that’s his you learn.

I don’t buy that a guy who has caught 1 pass of 10 or more yards in 4 games us playing like a stud. Patriots have completed 65 passes, not 11. Every WR in the NFL has tape of times they were open and didn’t get the ball. Was he open in time? Did he run the right? I don’t believe 8/61 in 4 games is a guy playing like a stud and it’s everyone else’s fault.

He signed for peanuts with the team he has been on for four years, and he's splitting time with a rookie. I don't know that he's better than anything the Pats expected to have there this year, and I doubt he'd have left Washington as he finishes his career.

Nothing like this year.

That's one theory. I'm with Brady here - let him sit and learn and let the game slow down for him. Plus, he had a lot of work to do, particularly with his footwork. I think we'll see him soon, but I'm okay with him sitting the year.

Your word, not mine.

I think he's going to be a good NFL WR. He gets open, he works hard, he's got great hands. I watched him a lot last year. I have high hopes for him and for Douglas.

You only have to look at the Washington offense to know he has to be better than what we have because our LT has been criminal #1 in the worst offense football. You are arguing Polk is dominating at 61 yards because it’s everyone else’s fault.

Disagree, and Belichick often resigned them before they were free.

If he sits the year, he is a rookie again next year.

How many teams can you name who’s #1 and #2 are worse than Polk a d Douglas?

He says he decided it was Mayos job before Mayo spent a day as a coach.
That's very bizarre and really a slap in the face to many coaches who have worked hard at a chance to ever be in a position for a HC job. How was he unsure of BB (a respected DC) to succeed Bill Parcells when he bolted for the Jets in 1997, but was he's good with Mayo with absolutely no coaching experience at that time?

The posters backing Bobby really need to take a step back and think about this again.

BB first year had Bledsoe, Terry Glenn, a LT of Bruce Armstrong and a LG of Joe Andruzzi

BB thru 4 games 2000:
Record: 0-4
Scored 16,19,13,3 in first 4 games. 12.75 per game

Mayo thru 4 games:
Record 1-3
Scored 16,20,3,13. Is 13 per game

So far Mayo is starting like a Hall of Fame coach.

BB was 2-8 thru first 10 games giving up 20.6 pts per game and averaging a score of 16.7 yet he seemed to work out fine.

Let's see what Mayo can do when he has a starting QB and gets his system in place. Generally, first year coaches struggle out of the gate.

Seems like the celebratory “Gatorade Shower” happened about 3 months ago rather than just 3 weeks. The “troubling crossroad” will be and 8-lane highway during rush hour by the time this season is concluded… The Draft still in April??

He says he decided it was Mayos job before Mayo spent a day as a coach.

First I've heard of this. But it goes to the notion that Mayo's PERSONAL profile is what sold RKK vs. his football acumen. Which makes "leap of faith" an understatement installing him as head coach. Jerod might have leadership/CEO skills, player experience and limited assistant experience to draw upon, but whether that's enough to effectively do the job we'll have to see. I certainly hope he pulls things together but am skeptical.

Just curious, Who was the coach you wanted?

Bill had previous HC experience so he should have been able to start better. But comparing scoring numbers from 2024 vs 2000 is not an apple to apple comparison. I do agree with your premise though of course Mayo deserves the benefit of more time to figure things. He's now run into his first adversity how he responds is way more important than how he got to this point.

I’m fine with Mayo for now. Just don’t get all the Vrabel love around here. What has he ever won?
3 Super Bowls and 4 AFC championships. He racked up all sorts of sacks and even a few touchdowns. I'm surprised you don't remember this. It was glorious.

As a coach?
As a coach he reached an AFC Championship but lost.

I'm not saying he should have been the choice. I actually am a little more intrigued by Mayo just because I precieve him as the smarter of the 2.

Just thought it should be obvious why he gets plenty of love around here. He earned it.
