Pretty much every account says the same thing. Mike Reiss reported that the IR had a "minor injury" designation that requires NE to release him when healthy. This means that the IRing is merely logistical, this is a cut with some decorative flair.

Imagine that the Patriots released Josh outright and think about what that might say about him or the other options. For all intents and purposes, that's the situation we find ourselves in.

A "bone bruise" is what ended Cam Neely's career. Because the "bruise" cause the muscle to calcify. It's extremely painful.

Howard has all the potential in the world without the production. Two different coaching staffs now and he hasn’t lived up to it. That’s not to say he is a bust or won’t get it going by any means but I wouldn’t want to give up a first round pick for him.

And the team is 7-0 with a lot of injuries coming off a SB championship season. IIRC, there were a lot of people who thought Michel was a more versatile, better all-around player than Chubb. Not sure which TE you would have drafted; it's not like Hockenson, as good as he may be, is tearing up the league.

The offense is 10th in the NFL in yards. At the end of the season last year they were 5th. The yardage is almost identical after 7 games - 2668 last year v. 2641 this year.

The offense isn't good enough. They haven't scored nearly as much, especially when factoring in the number of points scored by the defense and special teams. That's highlighted by a mediocre running game. They're fitting in two new guys on the OL, which is tough. But I'm seeing improvement each game.

The offense (not counting the D/ST scores) is now scoring 26.57 points per game. Even allowing other teams to keep their defensive scores (because I'm too lazy to adjust each one), that puts them 8th in the league. It's not where they want it to be for sure, lots to work on, but to say they wouldn't make the playoffs without the defense is hyperbole. They might not make it with the 2011 Pats defense, sure. But a top ten offense is good enough for a wild card birth at least as long as you have an average defense.

Given all the massive speculation that is running riot in the neighborhood, it is only fair that Bedard add his to the mix. It makes as much sense as any of it does.

And in the spirit of the moment, I'll add mine.

I think the Gordon decision was strictly a football one. He didn't have any of his 2013 explosiveness when he showed up last season. IMHO, he seemed even slower this year. My guess is that ESPECIALLY after the injury against the Giants, they didn't see it getting any better. So when it came time to figure out the roster, he was the odd man out. The train was moving out and Josh wasn't ready to climb aboard

On the plus side, I disagree with Bedard on the possibility that he's about to fall off the wagon. That being said, I can understand why he thinks its a POSSIBILITY.

Right now the defense is good enough to carry a slowly but improving offense toward the finish line. The Pats will have 8 games for Harry and Sanu to develop some chemistry with Brady and adding Wynn after the bye will fortify the OL. So by the time we get to the playoffs, BOTH the offense and defense should be ready for their best football.

BTW- given what we know now, the 60-64th pick in the draft makes more sense than it did when we first heard it.

Yes, and the fact that the IR designation said it was minor clarifies which type of injury it was.

On one hand the pundits on TV rave about the Pats chances at 19-0, and some of them are saying the "AFC is OVER" already

But then we hear ourselves being sad about this 7 and 0 team. I mean the offense is still pretty good and will improve. Last year we went 11-5. We would have to go 4 and 5 the rest of the way to match that. 6-3 gets us 13-3 and HFA.

I feel scatter brained over whether we suck or whether we are the greatest team of all time on a near daily basis.

Wow, until today...I thought the I/R thing was because of a serious injury. I agree that Gordon hasn't been as explosive as we were hoping him to be, but we needed a deep threat. Now Dorsett is our only deep threat basically.... I am not 100% with this decision and understand the WR log jam....

It's likely that, rather than engaging in placing him on IR and then releasing him with an injury settlement which is the way it appears to have been reported in many outlets ("they plan to release him from IR"), the Patriots are placing Gordon on waivers first and designating him as injured (since he is). If he goes unclaimed, he would revert to the Patriots' IR, but if he is claimed and added to a team's active roster (which he likely would be), then his salary is off the Patriots' cap. Similar to the way the Patriots got that Giants tight end and Tyler Gaffney off waivers back in the day, since they were waived with an injury designation.
