Goodell rules 'NO Twittering' 90 Minutes prior to kickoff

Certainly seems odd but I wonder if the ruling has anything to do with regard to player info and the inpact on betting lines before the game. Teams play around with the injury report all the time. More to the point, if a player is listed as probable, but tweets, "I am really hurting, not sure how well I can play.", that can change the line big time and may be inconsistient with the team or league's info with regard to that player to the sportsbooks.

Cell phones are already not allowed on sidelines during games. I don't think there is a problem with them before games because players & staff are simply calling someone. Twitter is more like publishing, not calling.

Music is also controlled. Stadiums can only play music at certain times.

Injuries and gambling may be part of it, and it likely is the reason the league will give if pressed, but I think it has more to do with control of information. NFL revenue comes from broadcast people paying big bucks for the right to broadcast information so that people will tune in. That's where the NFL gets its money. Twitter is sending out information before the broadcasters get it.

The league is simply protecting its revenue stream.

Yep. Agree 100%. Info and access has a pricetag no question and most of your pregame shows are 2 hrs to 1hr before kickoff. Makes total sense.

I was thinking the same thing. fantasy football alone generates something in the low billions; just imagine what Vegas generates.

That's why I question the league itself being involved- if it was just about football the tweeting habits of any given player would be left up to the franchise itself.

Yes, I am sure fans across the world will be utterly destroyed they have to wait those long hours until after the game to hear from their favourite player.

There's no reason for the players to be twittering right before the game - you'd think they would maybe want to ... I don't know ... prepare for the game?

I agree that it would be pretty dumb for players to be twittering right before a game, and I fully expect that any coach wouldn't tolerate it. That's exactly the point, though: it's the team's business, not the commissioners. It's just another example of Goodell overextending his authority to create a pointless and stupid rule just because he can. It's right up there with that rule that he made about cheerleaders distracting opposing players.
