Once a prospect gets invited to camp, where he was drafted becomes meaningless. Sure, a higher tier contract might buy him a little more leeway, but the best players will rise up the depth chart and play, the worst will sink before disappearing entirely.

People get too caught up in draft position. The reality is roughly a third of the entire NFL is made up of UDFA’s. There is a lot more talent than there is draft rounds and that doesn’t account for the large number of teams that are run by morons.

The average NFL career lasts three years, the draft is a crapshoot and too many NFL executives are in that position because of nepotism or dumb luck.

We need a Welker/Edelman on this team that's for sure. I hope it can be Chism or Pop. I like what I see from Chism so far but this happens every year with a player or two during camp that we all get excited about only to see them disappear as the season rolls on. Lets hope this kid lives up to the lofty expectations this forum is placing on him.

I like to point out Danny Woodhead as exhibit A for that type of thinking.

The Rats released FA Woodhead, the better player, rather than the 3rd round RB they had picked, because of the draft pick investment.

The Pats benefitted from the Rats’ folly.

I heard that if Chism ran in the 4.5-4.6 range he would have been a 3rd rounder.
But, who knows. Some guys play faster on the field in pads than in underwear on a track.
His game film shows him pulling away from guys when he gets in the open. If Welker was a 5.65, I think Chism can train to be at least that fast, and Welker did okay in the NFL

Far more important than his 40 time is his short shuttle and 3 cone, which are elite..

I do think folks are talking past each other a little bit on the 40 time.

It is most likely true that his 40 time is irrelevant as far as his ability to succeed as a WR, since the role he will be used in will mostly be off the line where he doesn't get pressed and will be able to get open with movement, which requires agility vs. speed and he has elite agility.

I do think @One-If-By-Sea has a point in regards to 40 time as a gunner though since getting to the returner faster is very important. 0.3 seconds can be the difference between hitting him as he catches it and letting him past you. Brenden Schooler as a reference ran a 4.4 forty, and so did Matthew Slater. However, as @Huckleberry1 said, Chism can still find a place on a coverage team, just probably not as the gunner.

How much can 40 times be increased through training?

Where you are drafted or not draft does make a difference. You are a late pick or UDFA, you do have to justify more than people drafted higher than you. I mean if Chism outshines Kyle Williams in training camp and the preseason and the Pats have to cut one, it is doubtful it will be Williams.

Chism could make the 53 man roster and outshine WRs who were drafted in the second or third round of this year's draft. He could even end up being the best WR in this year's draft when everything is said and done. But he does face tougher odds to make the roster than someone drafted higher than him. Mini-camp was a great start for him, but he still has to prove himself onto the roster in July and August where someone like Kyle Williams is guaranteed a roster spot barring complete disaster.

Chism has a number of advantages over the WR’s he’s competing for a roster spot with. The first is that he can play on every Soecial Teams unit, which also makes it far more likely you will be active on game days. Bourne, Baker, and Polk don’t contribute on Special Teams. The second is the role he will play in MacDaniels offense, which is very specific, and once again none of those guys, except Bourne to some degree, can play that Welker/Edelman Slot role, and that’s been a key element of MacDaniels offenses for years. Bourne can play out of the a lot, but it will be more like the way Douglas and Diggs play out of the slot, and not the instantly open Welker/Edelman role that Chism will play.

Michael Bumpus, his high school coach, was one hell of a WR in his own right. The guy played at Wazzu in the early 2000’s. Smaller guy, but quick and productive. I have an autographed, game worn WSU jersey of his. The guy knows what he’s talking about.

Sprint times can be increased though training and better technique. But in my experience as a coach it only helps a little. When it comes down to it, we are as god made us
