Maybe we should be adding apy/cap hit implications when we are listing our moves.

f.e. Tomlinson is projected around 10M apy. I wouldn't necessarily take him at that price. But there is decent chance his price will be lower (NYG will probably not compete if they want to keep Williams & they have young core on the roster; prices after top tier FAs will fall; DL could be less valued position due to cap restraint). If his price gets closer to 8M range i'd be in. He is 27 and one of the better IDL in the league fitting what BB wants perfectly. Id love to sign him on 5-6y deal (although his agent might push for much shorter). That would make his “adjusted“ cap hit (TOP 51 rule) well below 5M even if its not backloaded. So even if you take him at 10M you'd end up with around 5M cap hit.

If you dont want to spend top NT $ and still want significant upgrade you can go DaQuan Jones at some 6M & 3.5 cap hit.

Guy is guesstimated by Miguel (and me) at c.4M. 2021 cap hit would be around 2M.

So if you're willing to spend some 10M 2021 cap on IDL & still add one FA you can go with guys projected at 6-7M apy like Wolfe or one of plenty cheaper options among older vets.

ok - let me repost this for those who missed it or are joining later:

CAP SPENDING MATH

Since lots of people are spending pats cap & paid Pats “reporters“ making rookie mistakes maybe just a few notes:

63M free cap is even much more than it looks at first sight:

1.
The 2021 cap hit will be 20-40% lower than average per year contract.
So if you want and go spend 60M of Pats 2021 Cap Space - you can sign c 80M worth of apy contracts.

f.e.: Hightower 2017 - one of top LB on the market — reported 4y/35.5M = 8.9M apy (all projections well over 10) = 5.3M cap hit in 2017
This is a bit backloaded since Pats were well in SB window. Here is more normal example of signing solid vet:
John Simon - solid starter/rotation > first reported 2y/7.1M = 3.5M apy turned into 2y/4.4M = 2.2apy = 1.8M cap hit (projected iirc 2y/12M)

2.
Those Cap Hits are actually even lower bc of the TOP 51 contracts rule. Every new contract higher than 51st contract replaces that contract. Usually that contract is around 0.8M. Pats already have 62 players signed. Current 51st contract is already around 0.8M.
That means Pats only lost around 4.5M cap space signing Hightower on 9M apy contract.

3.
Another common mistake made in offseason roster building projection is Cap Space Hit for combined 2021 Draft Class.
While the cost for Pats Draft Class is currently projected at 9M most these contracts will not make TOP 51. Only 1st and 2nd round picks (if they keep them) would make the top 51. So when you account TOP 51 rule only 2M would be taken off Free Cap.

4.
Also - even if Pats don't NEED to cut or restructure players, some additional 2021 cap will come from that anyway (high priced opt-outs etc)

5.
Projected apy contracts (that i will include in my positional listings to follow) will probably be even lower than normally due to tighter League Cap - especially after top tier.

BTW - as projected earlier, Pats are now #3 in 2021 Free Cap after Indy traded for Wentz (and lost 25.4M). This means they are even better situated to take advantage of the bargain FA market 2021.
Pats are #1 in effective Cap Space in 2022!

Bottom line: 63M+ Free Cap can buy you a lot of team. Hope you can enjoy your roster building even more.

100% And i am so thankful posters here respect this . our appetite will always be bigger than BBs though ;)

Also - i see this thread as a process and elimination game. So concentrating on sole positions we might get a bit too greedy but after i finish with positional listings we will recap/revisit and discuss more in depth the whole picture approach.

I apologize for going too slow - ill try to speed up positional listings.

Thanks, great post. I would only add that I think BB rarely signs a player and then releases them before their last year to save cap space. So I think adding "dummy years" or extending someone who is older for 4 or 5 years (when it is highly unlikely they will play out the whole contract) is not how BB operates. Maybe I am wrong - you seem to understand this all better than me.

BB seems to honor his contracts so the players know it is a "real deal" versus fly by night GMs who offer fake back end contracts to falsely inflate the contract's perceived value. What is Adam Humphries thinking right now? BB offered him more (supposedly) and now that he loses the rest of his contract how much "straight cash" did he lose? You can bet he regrets his decision now, and I am guessing that BB uses that as an example when he talks to players and their agents.

Agreed. The numbers i used are normal deals. Vast majority of deals are “real“ for 2 years + guaranteed $ incl. BB.
Here two examples from @Miguel. He tends to like/pay Pats players a bit more ;)
(Always take away c. 0.8M for replacing lowest TOP 51 salary when accounting cap implications.)

Thanks for the example. Not sure BB will back load contracts that much but the cap should be 20% to 40% higher in a few years so maybe that is a smart thing to do.

The bolded part is funny because PatsFans posters always want to pay other team's players a lot more. ;)

Spending Plan for Free Agency
IDL - AAV 12.5M/1st Year 10M
IDL - AAV 8M/1st Year 6M
IDL - AAV 5M/1st Year 4M
You could fill in the names Tomlinson, Butler, Guy. Taking the Rule of 51 discount that would be 20M - 2.4M=17.6M 2021 cap space.

Cap Space is 63.5-17.6=45.9M

Other spending priorities:
10M EDGE (could be two 5M players)
10M Journeyman QB (Fitzpatrick, Mariota)
5M Coverage LB (Milano)
8M C (Andrews)
8M TE (Jonnu Smith)

I also think that the Patriots will create cap room by extending/releasing/trading some players.
I think that with COVID rules last offseason and likely elimination of OTAs again this offseason. Limited preseason. We already have a lot of young players so we may trade a lot of our draft picks into next year.
It will place an emphasis on pro player scouting and the long tail of free agency that are the Veteran Minimum Signing Benefit deals for guys who can still play or fill a ST role for you.

Patriot Report: Here’s the latest news regarding Patriots CB Stephon Gilmore:

• Multiple executives believe it’s a “foregone conclusion” that the Patriots will trade Star CB Stephon Gilmore this offseason, per Jason La Canfora.

• Patriots are expected to approach Gilmore about his contract this offseason, per Jeff Howe and an extension would help both sides. However, they would have to agree on new money.

•If Gilmore is looking for $17 million+ per year, Jeff Howe believes that the Patriots will look to trade him. But if Gilmore is willing to compromise between $14-$15 million, then Gilmore could be back.

The Pats' normal approach is to fill the big holes in the roster before the draft, so they can take BPA whenever possible in the draft.
Is that possible this year, given the # of big holes? What would that look like?

It is possible. It also depends what one sees as big hole. I bet BB view of TE room differs significantly from this board. So what we might see as big hole or big need he might just see as opportunity to upgrade. Same goes for LB and maybe some other position as well.

As said before ill first go position by position in depth and then go and see the big picture possibilities.. but am always interested to hear from you and others..

Another deep, versatile pool at position of need. Almost feels like 2017 re-draft with most our binkies again available :)

I didnt watch much of 2021 edge class yet so id appreciate the input there as well..

One thing to keep in mind is that expected new media deals will effect structures of this yrs low Cap contracts - pushing cap hits to 2023 even on shorter deals..

A bit surprised nobody jumped in for edge convo.

OK, let me start first with looking at NE FAs and possible upgrades.

Wise was solid PTP DE/DL esp. over the last two seasons and since everyone is just counting sacks he might not have a strong market in this deep FA class. There will be quite a few players available in his range (5-7M apy) with similar production and fit, so the Pats can play the waiting game if they decide to go this way. Terrell Basham, Jordan Jenkins and Denico Autry are of roughly similar mold to Wise that should fit well and offer a bit of pass rush upgrade.

One guy i bet BB has his eye on is Kerry Hyder who had a great breakout year in SF. These are numbers from mid NOV: According to PFF Hyder's run-stop percentage of 10.3 — the percentage of a player's run defense snaps on which he was responsible for a stop — ranks second among edge defenders. Hyder's 34 quarterback pressures rank No. 11 among edge defenders. He ended the season with 9 sacks. His projected contract by OTC is 11M apy but i think it could be significantly lower. SF like him a lot but they have Bosa, Armstead and Ford returning so paying another high contract on the position is very unlikely. And it is always easier market if home team is not bidding. If the price gets to 8M range he could be a steal. He would fit in Trey Flowers role that Pats were dearly missing.

John Simon was great pickup in his first year offering strong edge setting, but his overall play diminished significantly in 2020 and Pats should look for upgrade and players entering prime. One very good option could be Tyus Bowser from BAL, projected at 5-7M.

Here is a nice look at what he brings to the table:

maybe not very likely scenario for BB but lets put it here for reference:

So it took Arizona 15th, 79th (3rd rounder) and #152 (4th round comp) to move up to 10 from 15. But for the Pats to move up to 8 it's going to take 15, 47, and a 2nd in 2022?? (Most recent Kiper projection).. Sorry, but I can't see it costing THAT much more to move up 2 spots.. The difference between 47 and 79 is huge.. Much more so than the what the #152 covers.

This is interesting- thanks for this.

I’m going to disagree with your conclusion and think that BB declines the option on Wynn too. BB’s gone on the record before saying that you can’t be afraid of free agency. I think he’d be hesitant to give an injury-guaranteed $10m to Wynn when he has yet to complete a full NFL season. Yes, he’s looked good when out there, but he’s not out there enough yet. BB may also have his eye on a LT for that 1st round pick too.
Wynn's Achilles injury was a fluke when he got pushed into Brady by Michael Bennett of the Eagles.
The turf toe injury was the result of being stepped on. And it was Burkhead who was responsible for taking out Wynn this past season.

While they may not pick up the 5th year option, I could see the Patriots giving him an extension to BYPASS the 5th year option. I wouldn't be surprised if the Patriots had Wynn working on Plyometrics and learning "how to fall" so he could avoid the muscle injuries.

I think that they WILL take an OT in the draft regardless of what they do with Wynn. I believe this because of the situation with Cannon and the question marks of Cajuste and Cunningham..

Ok.
I'm not a fan of Hyder. He's bounced around for 7 years, missing the entirety of 2017. I think he's too undersized at 6'2.
Not a fan of Basham. He's too much of a liability in coverage..
Say no to Tak McKinley and Ngokue. Guys who have been on 3-4 teams in a year are trouble.
I haven't seen Weatherly play, but a guy who takes over 300 defensive snaps and only gets 17 tackles on a team like Carolina makes you wonder what is up. Either the other team is going away from him ALL the time or there is something else wrong.
C. Harris - Too Slow

I think that Bowser is exactly the kind of guy that BB likes.. Under-utilized in B-more. Would have the chance to start.. Would bring much needed speed.

Okwara - Had his best year in 2020 und Patricia.
Dawaune Smoot - Took the most defensive snaps of his career.. didn't see an increase in sacks, but DID increase his overall pressures from 9 to 31 on just 200 more snaps..

Jordan Willis - Intriguing in his potential. Could bring a lot of speed to the team.

Samson Ebukam - Has played both ILB and OLB as well as Special Teams. Has speed to burn having run a 4.45 - 40. His best year was as an ILB in 2018. I could see him paired with Hightower when the Pats are in the 4-2 or as a back-up..

I focused on younger guys with speed mainly because I think that even if they get someone like Alex Smith, the Pats, it will probably take a year before they can go deep into the play-offs and I think that the younger guys will be more hungry..

I was looking at Barmore because you never see the top DL available at #15, but his deficiencies against the run make it unlikely Belichick would use a 1st on him. If they don’t use their first on a QB then I would expect they will look for exceptional athletic ability as they did with Duggar and Uche last year.

Wynn's Achilles injury was a fluke when he got pushed into Brady by Michael Bennett of the Eagles.
The turf toe injury was the result of being stepped on. And it was Burkhead who was responsible for taking out Wynn this past season.

Burkhead was taken out by a combination of Wynn and Ryan Izzo long before Wynn’s annual injury last season.

Sorry LD I have half post written then I'm sleeping or building the city of Boston. In this case our great MBTA stations. I'm exhausted all the time bc of long hours, 6-7 days a week. Boston is lucky is have a guy like me. Said this before but you definitely own me a "thank you" or "appreciate it pal" if you live or just moved to the city. You wouldn't be here and it wouldn't be as good without me.

Anyway the 2017 rush class haunts me bad. It definitely hurts and was a disaster. Looking back in some cases I could of had guys 2 grades lower and I still would have been wrong lol! Sometimes there are no big lessons learned or light going off. You just suck.

So I really like Lawson & Bowser. I had Lawson graded correctly and was too high on Bowser but I'd love to see him here. I love Lawson. Non-stop motor and fight. Good and still improving run defender. He's not bad at all. I'd love to see what Bill would do with him. Doesn't have huge numbers so you'd think he won't command a lot but I wouldn't be shocked to see someone lock him up for 4-5 years at a number a little higher than most think really good player. Bowser is that do-it-all guy, think A Thomas (remember that pick 6!)? Yes, no? I'm not breaking the bank for either but I really like both players.

I think Reddick might come cheap and could be a possible KVN replacement if we feel the need. Shows you how old this post is lol. So maybe KVN for the KVN role. I'd gladly bring back him and HT for another year and punt the LB question into next year. If we have them and keep the secondary together we could really focus on the DL.

One guy I wouldn't mind taking a shot at is Kpassagnon. He was playing pretty well last year. Project coming out and actually really played his best ball the past few years imo. He could fill a few roles and would be a solid piece upfront. If Bill wants to play 6-7 DB's you need a few guys like him on the line. Can play anywhere really. I would mind seeing him come in at all. Him and Butler played different positions but Kpassagnon can threaten the edge a little more.

Those are the guys I'd be interested in and obviously Judon.

UDFA

Dayo Odeyingbo could fall big bc of his achilles injury and the depth of the class. He's even worth a 5th-6th round pick if you feel good about medicals but it wouldn't be surprising to see him go udfa. 6'6 270 with lots of tools (hands, length, lateral movements inside)
Fake chop to get the tackle to commit or show his hands. He uses both, some tackles like this approach but he leaves his chest open. Looks like Dayo controls and turns his man before working towards the QB with his hands. Nice rush.

Tough break on a neck injury I believe late in the season but Marquiss Spencer could be interesting if he's healthy.

How about Shaka Toney? I'll have a decent grade on him but where are you playing a somewhat maxed out 6'2 235-240 edge? Off the ball, OLB? I'd love to see someone get creative with him and I think you have to.
He can really get off though! He's a speed rusher that takes a super efficient path to the QB.

I love Basham, Perkins & Turner for us as 2nd-3rd round options.

I'm not a fan of Hyder. He's bounced around for 7 years, missing the entirety of 2017. I think he's too undersized at 6'2.

Did you thought Flowers was “too undersized“ as well :)

Okwara - Had his best year in 2020 und Patricia.
Dawaune Smoot - Took the most defensive snaps of his career.. didn't see an increase in sacks, but DID increase his overall pressures from 9 to 31 on just 200 more snaps..

Definitely two guys to keep an eye on.
Okwara could be just too expensive and questionable fit re run, edge set & contain - something very much needed with Wino, Uche on the other side.
Smoot could be real possibility for a solid backup/rot piece esp. if he falls to second part of FA.

Burkhead was taken out by a combination of Wynn and Ryan Izzo long before Wynn’s annual injury last season.
ROFLMAO .. Umm. No. Wrong. Burkhead was hurt when Bradley Roby took out his right leg and Justin Reid go him high. No Patriot player touched Burkhead.

Wynn missed Bradley Roby because Roby dove around Wynn.
Damiere Byrd was the one who failed to successfully block Reid.
Ryan Izzo was lined up on the FAR side of the line and had ZERO to do with the play.

BTW, Wynn was injured during the same game as Burkhead. You're claim that it was "long before" is as completely wrong as your statement about how Burkhead was injured.

While I am wrong that it was Burkhead, it was another player who came down across the back of his leg. It was Eric Murray of the Texans who landed on Wynn's right leg and Tyrell Adams who landed on his left. But yeah. Sure.. That's WYNN'S fault.

Try using some facts next time.
