Geneo Grissom Looking to be as Versatile as Possible

Steve Balestrieri

2nd-year player Geneo Grissom is looking to be as versatile as possible to not only stick on the 53-man roster but to find as many reps on the field.

I liked what I saw from Grissom against NO but he's still no higher than 6th on the DE depth chart behind Sheard, Ninkovich, McClellin, Long, Flowers. Rufus Johnson looked a lot better than Grissom last preseason but that didn't seem to stick out as much last Thursday. I bet he would make it to the PS despite being a 3rd round pick in year 2. It's been done every year.

I still can't figure out what the Hell he is. The versatility is nice, but he needs to excel more at something specific if he wants to even sniff actual playing time.

Not really sure what to make of Grissom. Seems like the classic jack of all trades, master of none type of player that can work for depth, but most years are not as stacked on the front 7. He may not have a place on this team. Shea McClellin basically does everything Grissom does, but better. He also had slightly better agility and speed numbers, based on combine drills. Obviously there's more to football than just testing numbers, but if you have a prospect who plays at a higher level, and has slightly better test numbers, then it's hard for the other guy to get meaningful snaps barring an injury.

Special teams may secure his roster spot, though. I could see him developing into a Ninkovich type down the road, but he's simply just not there yet.

So Rufus Johnson should be preferred over Grissom because of his play in the 2015 pre-season? Sorry, I'm not buying.

I agree that Sheard, Ninkovich, Long, McClellan, and Flowers will get almost all the EDGE reps if they are healthy. There are at least 3 LB positions: Collins, Hightower and Humber or Freeney. We certainly need 4 fatties (DTs). This give us a total of 12.
EDGE (5)
DT (4)
LB (3)
IMHO, there is room for TWO more players.

I expect 11 secondary and special teamers who are listed as safeties.

I corrected this. I think that we will have 14 front seven defensive players, therefore two more.

Nah, I think Grissom is ahead of Rufus right now. But he wasn't until recently, in my opinion. I agree about the rest but I think the LBs will be Hightower, Collins, KGH/Freeny/Humber (pick 2). I just wouldn't feel comfortable with 3 LBs, considering not long ago, teams kept 6 minimum.

He seems more like a 3-4 ILB to me. He's not explosive and he lumbers around a little. Not a lot of speed.

With that said I think he very much has some usefulness

Teams kept 6 (or even 7) when guys like McClellan were counted as linebackers.

If he doesnt get some playing time and contribute this year it will be a disappointment for a 3rd rounder. At least we get Flowers who looks like will replace Chandler

The criteria for being counted as a linebacker hasn't changed, it's just that McClellin is almost exclusively used on the line here.
