Game Thoughts: Pats grounded Air Bowles in their first match up edition

He has been pretty solid this year. People are hating on him based on reputation more than what he has done on the field. Since he has taken over the starting role, he hasn't been a liability and in the last three games he has been solid. And he has been drawing opposing teams' #1 WR a decent amount too.

And who are they going to get who any better than he is?

We're all hoping that you're right about Ryan, but you may be taking it a bit overboard. Then again, maybe you're spot on and he is the pleasant surprise of the secondary from here on out. I just don't think we can take much from the DAL game due to their personnel and conservative scheme, and the past 2 weeks were adequate, but maybe not quite as good as you're suggesting?

He gave up 4/6 passes with safety help, and the only reason it wasn't 5/6 was because Marshall dropped the TD pass.

Either way, you're right to point out that he had an effective game. The only debate would be the gray area involved between adequate and good, that's all. That's probably something that will differ based on people's personal opinions.

We lost the Packers game because they continuously picked on him vs GB's WR3.

I agree with you on Logan Ryan, but they lost that game because Gronkowski dropped a TD in the end zone.

They only passed to Marshall six times in large part because he was never open. The Pats took away him as an option. And let's not forget that his only really big play (a 29 yard pass), they had to line him up in the back field and motion him out the last second to get him open.

And again, Marshall was in position to drop that TD was because he tackled Ryan on the way into the end zone. I watched that play again and it is clear that Marshall committed flagrant OPI.

And anytime you go against a top WR in the league and hold him to 4 catches and 67 yards even with over the top help, you had a very good game. Browner had less effective games than this last year against lesser WRs and people were praising him. The difference is people underrate Ryan and overrated Browner.

BTW, if Edelman doesn't drop the pass, Revis would have been burnt for a TD. It happens to even the best CBs.

I thought the clock control was atrocious at the end. Had Amendola not secured a 1st down on the final drive, they would have either punted or kicked a field goal and given the Jets the ball back at the 2 minute warning. Throwing the ball 3 times when you're on the other team's 35 with 2:12 to play isn't acceptable.

I am not sure why people are downvoting you. At the very least on first down it should have been a run to force the Jets to either burn a timeout or get yourself past the two minute warning. I understand that the pass to Williams on first down was actually a high percentage throw that would have accomplished just that 9/10 times but in a game full of drops it was still not worth the risk of an incompletion.

That being said once past the two minute warning I would have been totally ok passing it.

Do you think they would have got a first down running it?

They didn't have to. They should have forced the Jets to burn their timeouts or go down to 2 minutes. Then they could pass on 3rd down. Instead they ran 2 short passing plays, including one which was for all intents and purposes a run but with substantially higher downside (2 yard out to Williams), both of which went incomplete and took about 5 seconds off the clock. This left the Jets with a full complement of timeouts, and - absent the Amendola 1st down - two full minutes to get down the field and score.

It's not the first time this year McDaniels has called pass at the end of the game rather than make the smarter call for a run. He comes off as stats obsessed at times.

They doubled Marshall all day, which was confirmed by Marshall, Eric Decker, and Tom Curran.

I suspect Marshall has been doubled by virtually everyone, so the drop in production is still relevant.

Logan Ryan is a mediocre CB, and should be a slot guy or CB3.

I agree that I'd rather he be coming off the bench, but Ryan is much better outside than he is on the slot.

You go with what's been working when you only have a three point lead.

A lot of talk in this thread about Ryan....a few weeks ago, most of us wanted him off the team. I'm sorry, I'm going to have to see more from him in order to feel confident. Yes, he played well yesterday, but that was with him also getting help and Marshall dropping a few balls, he played well against Dallas but that was with Weedum at QB. I'm glad we're undefeated, but I also think we could use a serious upgrade at the cb position and more depth.

Also, incredibly obvious when they were running it. Blount only played on downs where he was getting the football. They didn't even run any draw plays from the shotgun, which could have been big gainers with the heavy blitzing.

That's not true with Blount. I saw at least two play actions with Blount in the game. I remember because I wondered if the Jets would bite on play action when they weren't running the ball anyway.

Likely the Pats employed a three (or even four) deep safety look, meaning all he'd be throwing would be jump balls which have an extremely low success rate. The last play before the formation penalty, the Pats rushed two guys. That's 9 in coverage.

They likely would have if they'd been able to spike the ball.
Still throwing it over the middle cost them the game

I can definitely get behind this thinking for sure.

That's basically where I stand, as well. Hopefully, he continues to make some good strides moving forward.
