Game Thoughts: Pats earn a Rocky Mountain Bye Week Edition

Brady's performance wasn't his best ever, but folks have to realize the pats were coming off a physical Monday night game against Baltimore. So they had to prepare for Denver on a short week - two days of practice and a travel day Friday. If they had another day to prepare I think the offense would have been crisper.

Good thing we have a full week before the next game!
Oh, wait!

People putting the blame on Brady for that first quarter should go back and take a look at how badly the WR's were getting beat up at the LOS. There was little to no separation.

I don't get how so many clever people here think that we played like we did because Brady struggled and don't see that we actually did everything according to game plan.

Also, I find it a bit curious that Brady started out 0/6 with tons of drops into the sun and once they switched side of the field (and the sun was gone in q3) didn't have the issues in the game anymore. I will give the GOAT the benefit of the doubt that the sun light had more effect on the first few series' than many want to acknowledge.

It's the Jets, so I am not as worried. Plus we get them at home, and both teams are playing on a short week.

  • The Chris Canty Award for stupid celebrating

Umm. .. wut? I googled it, tried to find a stupid celebration by Chris Canty, I still don't get it. When did he do this that I missed?

The wrs have to be physical as well on the route. The donkey's have the best secondary in the league. I wonder what's the average QB rating against their defense.

On defense, I thought the pats were brilliant in putting Butler on Sanders. Last year they put Butler on Thomas and Sanders just destroyed us. Bill correctly decided this time around to shut Sanders down and make Thomas beat us. The result was 3 points for Denver.

Not true. Last year Ryan was mostly on DT, with Butler covering Sanders.

I'm still wondering if Chris Canty EVER made a single play worth celebrating.

McDaniels clearly didn't have any appetite to throw against the Denver secondary. The game plan was apparently to run into the pass rush, and that worked enough to maintain control of the ball and kill the clock especially in the second half, even if it didn't lead to a lot of points.

McD focused on exploiting Develin against the inside linebackers, Mason and Thuney against the defensive tackles. The idea of featuring Lewis over Blount was unexpected and rather effective. The improved O-Line really makes everything possible for the 2016 Patriots. The 2015 Pats would not have been able to execute this game plan.

The game plan also didn't play to Brady's strengths, which are to read the coverage, put the team into the right play, and throw into the weak spots of the D. Taken out of his strike zone, Brady did not have the fantasy numbers. Maybe it was PSTD, as some are saying, but I just think Denver deserves credit for having an exceptional secondary. I think rather than forcing it in there, the choice was to preserve Brady's incredible INT / TD ratio, and try to win in a different way.

The Offense played within itself and was able to nurse a lead-- which I think was entirely the point. Nothing explosive, nothing over the top of the D. Inside running and short passes to convert third down. Thank god for the early turnovers, because I saw no sign that the Pats were ready to come from behind against the Denver D.

This game, to me, was really all about the Pats Defense. Any time a playoff caliber team manages only 3 points, you know it was a stellar defensive game with plenty of useful turnovers.

Flowers has been a revelation, Butler and McCourty were clutch. Ryan was the player of the game for me, with a textbook and important INT that really won the day. Malcolm Brown's cleanup sack after Flowers moved Siemian off the spot made me smile, because that's the kind of play the 2003 Patriots were able to make seemingly at will. Please, more like that.

I have to watch the game film again, but my first take is that the D wasn't playing in it's normal Big Nickel look, with Harmon in centerfield and Chung in the box on the strong side to take the TE. I think Patricia had the team more in a Tampa-2 with McCourty and Chung playing deep to take away Sanders and Thomas, three corners, and a four man rush. Explains how Hightower had a quiet game.

Where and how did BB find Kyle Van Noy?! I had to look it up: Pats agreed to swap our 6th round pick for the Detroit 7th rounder to get the guy. Highway robbery.

Final thought: AJ Derby sure looked like a promising young TE.

Great Post rook goes to show if you have an excellent Defensive Backfield especially @ CB you can more than get by on Defense. I really hope Eric Rowe continues to improve on the outside its great to have Big young CB. if we can develop another young CB one of the Jones boys especially our CB position might not be as great as Denver's but good enough none the less.

He (in)famously celebrated a tackle. Problem was that the tackled runner had fumbled and the ball was sitting virtually at Canty's feet and he never noticed it. IIRC, the offense recovered the ball.

Yup! Feels Gooooood, Mile High! (All pun intended)

I recall another idiotic celebration tackle by Canty. He successfully wrapped up and tackled a WR by himself and started jumping up and down looking for a teammate to chest bump. Canty didn't seem to care that the WR had beaten him on the route and caught the ball for a first down. He just wanted a "Look at me" moment...

Be that as it may, I still miss Stork's huddle-break hop.

If it was a matching pair with his "I'm about to snap the ball" head-bob, then good riddance to both.

But Sunday’s game marked a noticeable change, in that the Patriots were able to win a regular-season game in which Brady did not throw a touchdown pass. That’s something the team hasn’t accomplished since, really, 2007.

Great job @Rob0729!
Two quibbles.

Why no mention of Develin? He's like having a seventh O-lineman, except he lines up in the backfield. And, what a story. Ivy League (Brown graduate). Goes to the Arena League and the UFL. Get's picked up by CIN, who "bungle" him over to the Pats.

And, shhhhhh. Let's just be real quiet and not talk about Gostkowski's apparently having beaten the yips...so we don't, like, jinx him...shhhhhh....

Amazing development in one season for Malcolm Butler. Even after the greatest Interception of all time I would say few if any had him pegged as the Monster he has become at corner.
Nasty attitude on the field too which helps.

He's hands down the best player on one of the top defenses in the league and in my eyes he's a defensive player of the year candidate, although he surely won't get any love, especially with only two INTs. He's as physical as any corner in the league, an actual asset against the run and typically shuts down the opposition's best. He's also capable of covering a lot of different types of receivers.

If that's true, butler must have played a lot better against sanders this time around. Last year i saw a lot of off-man coverage.
