Flacco believed to be in the running as a backup for New England in 2025

All contingent on a Milton trade.

If Milton is dealt (I'd love Milton + pick 38 to Pitt for pick 21) then a vet backup is important.

If not I'd rather he's qb2. He may just outright beat out whatever washed up vet is brought in anyway.
So, you value Milton as worth the value of a low 2nd rounder and would be willing to trade him if we could get that value.

Many folks are right. If Milton is worth a low 2nd now to some team, perhaps a lot of folks are right. Trade him now! (and sign a veteran backup) It is unlikely that Milton will ever be worth more.

last year? yes
this year? i'm good. let the y2 guys roll... save the roster space for churning the offensive line positions til you find a good one

It is unlikely that Milton is worth that.

highly unlikely.

not a chance hes worth a 3, let alone a 2

Good. Drake needs to learn the art of lobbing up a deliberately under-thrown deep ball so that the receiver can draw a penalty while fighting to come back to the fluttering pass. In all seriousness, though, I think it is a solid move if we do end up with Flacco. A longtime veteran and Super Bowl winner, he has performed pretty well all things considered when he has been thrown into action the last few years.

I don't think it (the importance of a veteran backup QB) is a one-size-fits-all situation.

Last year it was important to have a veteran begin the season as a starter, until Maye was ready to move into that spot.
That's not the situation in 2025.

For a genuine championship contender a veteran backup QB is very important.
I don't realistically believe that applies to the 2025 Patriots.

If Maye does suffer an injury, let's see what Milton can do.
Should Milton perform well, the Patriots will be able to get something of value in a trade for him a year from now.
If he falters, then so what? Would 40-year old Joe Flacco have delivered a Lombadi trophy?

If the line of reasoning is that the club should always have an experienced veteran backup QB in case of injury, then the team may as well trade Joe Milton right now - because he's never going to gain any experience as a permanent third-stringer.

I don't want to completely diminish the importance of a veteran quarterback, but this is going to take Vrabel & co. more than one season to turn around. Flacco is a one-year stop-gap, not part of a long term solution. If it is important enough that the Patriots are to bring him (or another experinced veteran backup) in, then there is no point in wasting a roster on Milton.
I agree that the team does not need to spend big money on a veteran backup who is able to win games if Maye is out. The team might as well give Milton a shot. I still think it is important to have a veteran in the QB room with two second year development players whose only year in the league was not the best environment.

Vrabel and Josh will decide whether one game against backups is enough to elevate Milton to being our backup if Maye is ever out.

Backup QB is a very important position.

They do unless there is a guarantee that Maye will be healthy in every game.
There isn't a guarantee that he'll even be the starting qb next season.

There's no guarantee that any one of us we'll be here tomorrow. Nothing is guaranteed!
Really? I’m not going down your rabbit hole. Drake Maye is the starting QB next season, that is guaranteed.

Strongly consider leaving Milton as our back up, that is very cost effective. Milton also has made tremendous progress in one year will continue to do so.
Sign another journeyman for our practice squad.
So many holes on this team to tie up not needed expensive cap hit. It may not be wise to sign Joe Flacco or comparable QB... ..

if Flacco wants to get on the field, and reviews each teams opportunity to do that, NE is about the last place he would consider, no?

Christian Barmore says hi FOOL! Remember last preseason when everyone was talking about him having a breakout year? Evidently you don't want to remember that! Or can't!

the question is value....

milton has value as a cheap backup, sure......but if you're playing your backup long term, your season is likely lost regardless.....this isn't a superbowl ready roster that hoyer can step into......so how much do we need a good young backup? his highest value to us, now that Maye has shown he's the man, is that he's cheap.......if Maye went down long term, you want a back up that isn't going to ****** the development of other young players......TBH there's plenty of cheap vets that can do that, too

he also has value to other teams.......is that value at it's highest right now, while he has multiple years on his rookie deal, after showing one good start, with a lousy QB draft on the horizon.......or is his value going to be higher after another preseason of work and showcase? because barring a catastrophic maye injury, talking robert edwards level, milton is really not going to see the field in NE over the course of his contract, not in a meaningful way.....so if you are going to move him at some point, you want maximum return........might that be now, with a weak class? who knows.....i'd say his value would potentially be higher after camp, getting him some preaseason starts and looks.....

but this all about what has more value.......a cheap rookie contract is all well and good, but when is his trade value at its highest? once you judge that, that is when you move him.........patriots have their young stud QB

That's an interesting take. I see it as can Milton be a solid backup/starter level? If the coaches don't think he's going to get there, trade him for whatever they think they can get. But if he can develop, let's have him be QB2, learn behind Maye and if Maye goes out, let him learn on the job. As you said, this isn't a team going to the Super Bowl, but if he can come in and perform at a decent level, it increases his trade value or his value to us as QB2. Plus, it'd just be more fun watching the Milton show than the Flacco show.
