Flacco believed to be in the running as a backup for New England in 2025

Milton's value will never be higher than it is right now. Unless, of course, disaster strikes and Maye sustains a serious injury that leads to him missing considerable time. And even then, Milton would have to ball out while Maye is sidelined. Not counting on any of that, so I have zero issues with the Pats moving Milton ASAP.

Call me crazy.... and remember we are only talking about a potential backup if Milton goes.... but...... Jimmy Garoppolo is available.

If he doesn't injure himself on the way to his physical, why not, if he comes with lowered salary expectations, also.

I would prefer Milton be active rather than the emergency QB.

Make Flacco the emergency QB?
I think we cant see this game against buffalo as anything but them trying to lose to us*

Milton by all reports its still a project

* they are very good at losing

Do they really need a vet qb?

I fail to see quite literally any merit. He's washed AF, we have Milton as a project, the last thing I want is him as a mentor - Maye already tries enough hero ball as it is. Flacco had one good post season and it was an aberration for other rather docile seasons. Maybe if we get an Anquan Boldin-like receiver, we can have Joe come in and give a clinic on just heaving it in the general direction of a receiver that is double covered but can out muscle an industrial hydraulic compressor.

According to Tony Pauline of SportsKeeda, the 49ers, Steelers, and New England are believed to be in the running for his services this offseason.

I'm certainly for having an experienced veteran in the locker room behind Maye, but I guess the question might be either where Joe Milton is at by the time we get to the end of training camp, and whether or not he's ready to the point where it makes sense to allow him to be the backup. Otherwise, I certainly feel like he'd be a good candidate. From there, it's just a matter of whether or not he's looking for a better opportunity to compete in camp elsewhere, or if he'd be looking to be a mentor here.

Then again, after what Milton showed at the end of last year, they may not need a veteran and they can maybe instead draft somebody late again and keep the 3rd QB on the practice squad..
Vrabel and Josh will decide whether one game against backups is enough to elevate Milton to being our backup if Maye is ever out.

Backup QB is a very important position.
Do they really need a vet qb?
They do unless there is a guarantee that Maye will be healthy in every game.

A year too late.

I can recall advocating for Flacco over Jacoby at this time a year ago, based on how Flacco had performed in Cleveland, and the majority thought Brissett was a much better choice because of 'familiarity'.

But at this point in time I question if using a roster spot on a veteran QB is worth it? I realize that Milton was playing against second and third stringers, but by the time the 2025 season commences he will have had about a year and a half of schooling to upgrade his skills.

With Maye and Milton no longer rookies, I am skeptical about the need for a third quarterback on the active roster in 2025.

He can't run.

Let's not take up a player position with a guy who can't play and should be a coach.
In the early years of Brady Bill liked having a vet QB around some were more likely than others to produce but clearly Bill felt there was value. I mean what was Flutie going to do if he ever had to actually play?

Is Milton that player?

I don't think it (the importance of a veteran backup QB) is a one-size-fits-all situation.

Last year it was important to have a veteran begin the season as a starter, until Maye was ready to move into that spot.
That's not the situation in 2025.

For a genuine championship contender a veteran backup QB is very important.
I don't realistically believe that applies to the 2025 Patriots.

If Maye does suffer an injury, let's see what Milton can do.
Should Milton perform well, the Patriots will be able to get something of value in a trade for him a year from now.
If he falters, then so what? Would 40-year old Joe Flacco have delivered a Lombadi trophy?

If the line of reasoning is that the club should always have an experienced veteran backup QB in case of injury, then the team may as well trade Joe Milton right now - because he's never going to gain any experience as a permanent third-stringer.

I don't want to completely diminish the importance of a veteran quarterback, but this is going to take Vrabel & co. more than one season to turn around. Flacco is a one-year stop-gap, not part of a long term solution. If it is important enough that the Patriots are to bring him (or another experinced veteran backup) in, then there is no point in wasting a roster on Milton.

I really can't even pretend to care or have any insight into how valuable or necessary a veteran in the QB room is or isn't, nor can I feign any extreme opinion over what will surely be an immaterial amount of cap space that won't impact them from doing anything else they want to in any way.

I just really don't care if they do this or not.

This is one alternative. Let's see what a 6th rounder who played well in a game against scrubs can do. I suppose our new 6th round QB can be the backup.
=====
Alternatively, we can be PREPARED to play an experienced QB if Maye should be out.
=======
I understand both alternatives.

Sign him. This is who should be mentoring Maye not Brissett or Hoyer who have been nothing but horrible in the NFL. Flacco has won a Super Bowl and had a successful career.

We should carry 3 QB's. a starter, a backup and an emergency #3. All are ROSTER SPOTS. I don't that we are wasting a roster spot keeping Milton, even if he isn't the #2 in 2025. HOPEFULLY, Milton will be the #2 in 2026, and we will draft another 6th rounder to be the #3.

Or, just possibly, Josh thinks that he already good enough to be #2 or to compete with a veteran for that spot. In any case, we need to add a QB.

All contingent on a Milton trade.

If Milton is dealt (I'd love Milton + pick 38 to Pitt for pick 21) then a vet backup is important.

If not I'd rather he's qb2. He may just outright beat out whatever washed up vet is brought in anyway.
