Flacco believed to be in the running as a backup for New England in 2025

Call me crazy.... and remember we are only talking about a potential backup if Milton goes.... but...... Jimmy Garoppolo is available.

Jimmy has his problems with ball security and injuries but with so many teams in need of an improvement at QB I believe he still have a place in this league, the fact he opted to sit on the bench it just shows how soft he really is, now confirmed.

That's an interesting take. I see it as can Milton be a solid backup/starter level? If the coaches don't think he's going to get there, trade him for whatever they think they can get. But if he can develop, let's have him be QB2, learn behind Maye and if Maye goes out, let him learn on the job. As you said, this isn't a team going to the Super Bowl, but if he can come in and perform at a decent level, it increases his trade value or his value to us as QB2. Plus, it'd just be more fun watching the Milton show than the Flacco show.

i think that's the other question........do other teams view him as a career backup guy? if so, then yeah, maybe he has worth here as a cheap, quality backup, and you move him near the end of his contract

if other teams view him as potential starting talent.......then you 100% move him when you think his perceived value is highest.....and looking at the dearth of quality QBs league wide, and the absolute ****show that is this year's QB draft class, that might be sooner than we thought

Christian Barmore says hi FOOL! Remember last preseason when everyone was talking about him having a breakout year? Evidently you don't want to remember that! Or can't!
Have you looked at, say, NFL mock drafts? Have you noticed that they don't say things like "assuming he doesn't get a blood clot" or "assuming he doesn't get shot at an ATM"?

Or why articles about who's starting in place of an injured player don't say "assuming he doesn't get arrested" or "assuming he doesn't get sick before the game"?

Obviously it's all speculation. Yet I've never read an article or mock draft that GUARANTEES anything. Let's just leave the guarantees out of the conversation because nothing is. Especially on a forum where most everything is speculation.

There isn't a guarantee that he'll even be the starting qb next season.
There's no reason to believe he won't be so that's close enough to a guarantee.

the question is value....

milton has value as a cheap backup, sure......but if you're playing your backup long term, your season is likely lost regardless.....this isn't a superbowl ready roster that hoyer can step into......so how much do we need a good young backup? his highest value to us, now that Maye has shown he's the man, is that he's cheap.......if Maye went down long term, you want a back up that isn't going to ****** the development of other young players......TBH there's plenty of cheap vets that can do that, too

he also has value to other teams.......is that value at it's highest right now, while he has multiple years on his rookie deal, after showing one good start, with a lousy QB draft on the horizon.......or is his value going to be higher after another preseason of work and showcase? because barring a catastrophic maye injury, talking robert edwards level, milton is really not going to see the field in NE over the course of his contract, not in a meaningful way.....so if you are going to move him at some point, you want maximum return........might that be now, with a weak class? who knows.....i'd say his value would potentially be higher after camp, getting him some preaseason starts and looks.....

but this all about what has more value.......a cheap rookie contract is all well and good, but when is his trade value at its highest? once you judge that, that is when you move him.........patriots have their young stud QB
Nice post, I agree that trading Milton when he is at peak value makes the most sense is almost inevitable that he is traded before his contract is up. Out of the options, I like trading him after camp the least because it is not likely that the return will help the team this year and team gets no value from him as a backup. It would be best to be able to get picks for this years draft or wait until after the season when his value should still be high or higher than out of camp. This all changes if a team gets desperate in camp and makes the team an offer they can't refuse.

According to Tony Pauline of SportsKeeda, the 49ers, Steelers, and New England are believed to be in the running for his services this offseason.

I'm certainly for having an experienced veteran in the locker room behind Maye, but I guess the question might be either where Joe Milton is at by the time we get to the end of training camp, and whether or not he's ready to the point where it makes sense to allow him to be the backup. Otherwise, I certainly feel like he'd be a good candidate. From there, it's just a matter of whether or not he's looking for a better opportunity to compete in camp elsewhere, or if he'd be looking to be a mentor here.

Then again, after what Milton showed at the end of last year, they may not need a veteran and they can maybe instead draft somebody late again and keep the 3rd QB on the practice squad..
I don't mind Flacco. Experienced vet with a big arm. He could maybe share some knowledge with that young and green QB room. I think he's a higher tier of backup than Brissett as well. Could actually do decent in some games if he's protected.
