Finally: an explanation for Ja'Lynn Polk's putrid rookie season

I saw a report that they coached Polk in all three positions - X,Z and slot. So maybe too much on his plate all at once for a rookie?

Add K Boutte I think he has a lot of Upside: He's been our Best WR this year and leading all WR's in snaps. I expect him to be better with the right WR acquisitions next year. Nobody expected him to make the last cut down and he did he D.I.D.
Agreed. I like Boutte.. he has sure hands.. and he makes more plays then anyone else. I'm warming up to the Idea of having DK Metcalf on the outside for Drake.. everyone else would be able to eat and make plays..

That's why I have soured on Pop I expected better: and the reason why I would pursue WR Chris Godwin in FA.
Pop will be a fine #3 next season.. the AVP offense doesn't really feature slot WRs pop has to run different routes to get open and use his speed in the open field. If Godwin is healthy I definitely take him.

Polk and Baker will be coached for a full off-season. They will be there through the entire training camp.

It is THEN that the team whether either is good enough to be the 4th or 5th or oven 6th WR on the team.

As always other than their rookie year, where they were drafted matters not at all.
-----------
The team will bring in one top WR. The open question is whether we bring in another starter level player or if we are OK with Bourne as our #2 coming into the draft.

AVP is blaming Polks year long struggles on the rookie wall. I kid you not

I mean, he can't really throw the kid under the bus either. He's the coordinator, not the head coach, who's job it IS to throw the kid under the bus.

A WR with a 5¢ head? I'm shocked, shocked I tell you

I don’t think that’s what they are saying. Players in all sports go through stretches where they struggle and lose confidence. The question is how he either rebounds or doesn’t? Polk played great in camp, and his hands were his greatest strength. He had some drops, Mayo took a public shot at him, and he struggled. My money is that he works his ass off in the offseason and shows that he was worth the pick next season. He never had a reputation as a diva or a head case coming into the pro’s.

It’s as simple as this:

At WR you can be EITHER a rarely gifted athlete who can physically do things few humans can regardless of your brain…coaches can basically say “run these 5 routes, get open, catch the ball” and be fine.

OR…you can have middling physical ability but be very smart, crafty, and tough and win with your brain.

Poll unfortunately seems physically limited AND dim AND weak-minded.

It’s like they chose all the worst possible traits.

Every rookie deserves a year to adjust and learn the pro game. I'll give Polk and Baker until next year's trading deadline before I conclude that they are useless. However, I won't let their inexperience stop me from looking for an upgrade. The offseason plan should include finding two upgrades at WR, and penciling in Polk and Baker as WR5 and WR6 with no guarantees of making the team.

I remember glenn being ok, nothing great, maybe if he had brady he would have been better. Mitchell barely rings a bell
Glenn was great in his rookie year. He set the record for most receiving yards,1132, by a first-year receiver (since broken). Afterward, not so great, although he had 1147 yards in 1999.

One thing this team did wrong is wait too long to move on from wide receivers who couldn’t play.

If the guys not getting in my mid season at all it’s best to move on.
However due to the cupboard being absolutely bare at wr they get a chance with the new coaches.

For some reason, I can't quote posts as they've disappeared after seeing them quoted by someone else.

Glenn's departure was tragic. He was my favorite WR and he would've had some very solid seasons with Tom. How could you not like the visor he wore and the elbow pads? The 90's was by far the most stylish for players.

Aside from the 2007 squad, the best WR group the Pats had during the Belichick tenure was the 2004 team of Branch, Givens, Patten and Brown.

Ivan Fears and Brian Daboll were the WR's coaches. They were part of Bill's best coaching staffs in the early 2000's.

I loved Glenn was devestated when Bill traded him cause he wanted to get paid and I guess nursed a injury as a contract tactic.

I remember Glenn's departure very differently. It wasn't tragic, it was necessary. He needed to get his **** together and it was never happening here where he was a victim and everyone else was in the wrong. He whined incessantly about not making the money his own dumbass behavior had cost him. Belichick was trying to build a culture of personal accountability, Glenn misread the room in spectacular fashion. If only he could have shut his mouth and behaved his ass he and Brady might have been one of the greatest QB/WR tandems since Montana & Rice.

watching the game tonight, and ricky persall had a decent catch and i thought to myself, no way the dude who literally took a bullet and missed most of the season has more yards then polk right?

big ****ing oof
