Evan Mathis released

There ain't no bigger Fan of Offensive Guards than I, and I'm an enormous Fan of Evan Mathis.

But in The Era of The Infernal Salary Cap, one cannot afford to pretend that we can afford to pay everyone what they're ostensibly "worth", lest we become the RedSkins. I could put together one Hell of a 64 Man Roster for you ~ including the Taxi Squad ~ but it would cost more'n $300,000,000.

You could make a very strong Argument that Mathis is worth $8,000,000 or so, even at 33.

He's that amazing.

But at 33 The Market has'm by the Balls.

***

It was manifestly stupid of Mathis to push the issue with a $5,500,000 Contract at 33, and it smacked of Desperation: A Late Bloomer Trying To Make Up For Lost Time. Psychological Profile: He's trying to squeeze every Dollar he can out'f the Market to make up for the Money he missed early on.

I don't get the sense that he's Greedy.

I get the sense that he's Pissed.

Hey, I understand how he feels: I'm about a Trillion Dollars short of where I'd expected to be, by now.

But you gotta Play The Ball As It Lies.

***

You start pushing and you start pressing...That's when you screw up and pull Tendons and such.

He needs to get his mind right.

He needs to go through a bit of Hell...Enough for'm to Accept Losses and remember to Count His Blessings.

And I don't know, frankly, if he's had enough Time to get used to the New Reality, to Mourn his Lost Earnings, get past what he's lost, and start thinking, once again, about what he might gain.

***

Considering his lack of Practice, his lack of Snaps, and what his State of Mind might be, right about now, he is in my Estimation both an elevated Psychological Risk and an elevated Health Risk:

I can't help but think his mind's still whirling, going from thinking he'd be cashing in maybe 7 or 8 Million this Year to 2 or 3 Million...and when he signs, he's going to be like one of those 1st Round Draft Pick Hold Outs, trying to cram 3 Months worth of OTA's and Camp into 2 weeks...a recipe for Disaster.

***

Having said that: You can never have too much Depth of Talent in The Trenches, so if we can get this Force for $2,500,000 to $3,000,000 a Year plus Incentives, I'd pounce on the Opportunity...But I'd insist on'm practicing with the 2's for now: I don't want'm pushing too hard, too fast...and popping an ACL.

I just have a hard time believing that BB will roll with two rookies and an injured Wendell as our three guards.

Jackson is pro ready, but I'm doubtful BB is planning to start Mason too. He's a project.

A Mathis to Mason 1-2 year bridge makes sense.

The Pats signed Brian Waters to a 2-year, $5.5M deal, so they're willing to pay good money for good talent. [I forget how much of that was his 2012 salary.]

Ya it was 2 years $5.5m but when BB tried to get him back for the '12 season he offered $4m for the '12 season.

I'm sorry, but why would any woman/wife hire a "really hot" nanny? Or allow her husband to do so?

She must have felt very secure since she herself is pretty darn attractive and she's also incredibly successful.

She didn't think her husband would be a cheating pig... but i agree with you, why even create the opportunity for that to happen?

Last report I saw was the Dolphins were only willing to give him $2m per. There is no way BB isn't tempted to offer him at least that much.

Dan Connolly was a $4m cap hit last year and his base salary was $3m.

He wanted an "out" in the marriage. No other reason.

Who knows what caused Afflek to stray but to humiliate the mother of his children is lower than low IMO

Not my money, but 3 million base and up to 3 million in incentives.

Perhaps even the scare of an injury to Jackson makes BB pick up the phone. Then again, Wendell is coming back soon, hopefully. But at the same time, we don't really know how well he fits at left guard.

Offered a 35 year old Brian Waters $4m to come back in 2012 and he was a RG

True, but they also had him returning to play in a system that he knew, and was already proven to be a pro bowl talent here. I think it's a bit different with outside players--at least to some degree. The original offer to Waters which brought him here was worth up to 5.5m dollars over 2 years, or approx. 2.75m per year. If Evan Mathis wants to come here for that kind of money, I'm all for it.

I'd love for Mathis to come here at the right price, but at this point I'm just hoping that he doesn't go to Miami.

I will start by saying ITBB( I trust BB)

But man I hope he does not pass on this guy over 1/2 a million bucks.

I mean what's 500 K between us arm chair billionaires?

kraft is a cheapskate.

@OmarKelly: "@DavisHsuSeattle: you know the lead dog in the Evan Mathis sweepstakes?"» NOPE. But I suspect the team is in the AFC East

The dolphins beat writer continues to think it's us.

Well, the Dolphins just signed Guard Bryant Browning.

San Fran, another team that would want Mathis, just traded for a guard.

The Patriots just traded out a guard...to San Fran...

Must. Not. Get. My. Hopes. Up.
