There ain't no bigger Fan of Offensive Guards than I, and I'm an enormous Fan of Evan Mathis.
But in The Era of The Infernal Salary Cap, one cannot afford to pretend that we can afford to pay everyone what they're ostensibly "worth", lest we become the RedSkins. I could put together one Hell of a 64 Man Roster for you ~ including the Taxi Squad ~ but it would cost more'n $300,000,000.
You could make a very strong Argument that Mathis is worth $8,000,000 or so, even at 33.
He's that amazing.
But at 33 The Market has'm by the Balls.
***
It was manifestly stupid of Mathis to push the issue with a $5,500,000 Contract at 33, and it smacked of Desperation: A Late Bloomer Trying To Make Up For Lost Time. Psychological Profile: He's trying to squeeze every Dollar he can out'f the Market to make up for the Money he missed early on.
I don't get the sense that he's Greedy.
I get the sense that he's Pissed.
Hey, I understand how he feels: I'm about a Trillion Dollars short of where I'd expected to be, by now.
But you gotta Play The Ball As It Lies.
***
You start pushing and you start pressing...That's when you screw up and pull Tendons and such.
He needs to get his mind right.
He needs to go through a bit of Hell...Enough for'm to Accept Losses and remember to Count His Blessings.
And I don't know, frankly, if he's had enough Time to get used to the New Reality, to Mourn his Lost Earnings, get past what he's lost, and start thinking, once again, about what he might gain.
***
Considering his lack of Practice, his lack of Snaps, and what his State of Mind might be, right about now, he is in my Estimation both an elevated Psychological Risk and an elevated Health Risk:
I can't help but think his mind's still whirling, going from thinking he'd be cashing in maybe 7 or 8 Million this Year to 2 or 3 Million...and when he signs, he's going to be like one of those 1st Round Draft Pick Hold Outs, trying to cram 3 Months worth of OTA's and Camp into 2 weeks...a recipe for Disaster.
***
Having said that: You can never have too much Depth of Talent in The Trenches, so if we can get this Force for $2,500,000 to $3,000,000 a Year plus Incentives, I'd pounce on the Opportunity...But I'd insist on'm practicing with the 2's for now: I don't want'm pushing too hard, too fast...and popping an ACL.
