Envious of that Seattle Defense.

Last year I was a big fan/supporter of Coleman. This year not so much. And unfortunately, Cyrus Jones hasn't done much either. Maybe we should have played Rowe last night.

I'm not envious of the Seattle D. We put up 24 on them with our offense basically playing their B game. Our D is why we lost this game and poor play calling on both sides of the ball
This. They weren't so hot, except for their goal line stand. They gave up some crucial 3rd & longs to Brady & Co.

If Brady got to play the patriots D, he would put up 50-55 points with 450 yards passing and 5 TD

Kind of unfair comparison.

We are missing that LEADER on defense. Seattle has a few of them.

Collins was not that guy. He is quiet and timid. Hightower is SUPPOSED to be our leader on D but he is also a quiet guy. McCourty as well.

We have some good, solid players on our defense...but nobody that is the bonafide leader. Nobody that's really going to talk and people will listen. It doesn't help that Belichick is playing these vanilla defenses with zero attacking taking place...or that a bunch of our guys have seemingly regressed (Ryan, Sheard especially).

That 04 defense was full of talent but also had LEADERs. It's such a shame what's happened to this defense because I really thought it was on it's way toward being ELITE. Collins, Butler, Jones, Malcom Brown, Hightower and McCourty were such a great nucleus on paper. Young, talented...HOME GROWN talent that seemed like it'd stick together and build some continuity. Not to mention our secondary guys (Roberts, Harmon, Ryan, etc). It's a shame.

McCourty is the leader of the secondary. McCourty plays soft. When was his last big, jarring hit? When was the last time he separated a receiver from the ball?
But then again, belichick has him play so deep it probably inhibits him from making big plays - but he's sure does a bang up job preventing 30 yard gains from turning into to 50 yarders! Yipppppeeeeee!

They line up and play. No dumb gimick like dropping 9 into soft coverage.

Apparently are weaknesses are not enough talent in the secondary... and lack of a pass rush. Those 2 things = a really bad situation. Its November now so we will see if they start to improve or what you see is what you get..

Not meaning to change the subject to the other side of the ball, but even the dumbest defensive scheme doesn't compare to the lunacy of the last drive 4th down attempt.

The one that couldn't stop anything Baltimore threw at them for most of the game in the playoffs and got shredded to the tune of 400+ yards and 31 points?

Apparently we judge defenses by a single game on this forum.
And let Seattle to score TD with less thean minute in the end of half, and then almost let them Td in the final drive in SB. That D?

I guess that GL stand and getting to Wilson in the redzone on the drive where he got called for intentional grounding don't count?

I watched through some of those 3rd down completions yesterday again and again. In most cases they were a split second away from getting to Wilson. So the pressure is there when they called for it but came just a bit late and there wasn't enough chipping/jamming on LOS.

Not as bad as it looked.

The more I think about it, the only part I really didn't like was the failed sneak on 3rd down. I am totally fine with the sneak to get the clock on down on first and the LGB run on second.

The final throw to Gronk was just badly executed. Not sure why it needed to be a fade but I am generally fine with the ball going to your best player on the final play of the game.

Thoughts ?

Honestly, that is more proof that the numbers are meaningless. If you could not tell the differences in those defenses when watching the game, I don't know what to say.
Agree.Pats offense had to be creative and fought for every yard, Brady didnt have WR completely open when he threw ball, on the otherside, Wilson scrambled like two or three times and with that bad Oline he had pretty clear pockett and when he threw the ball his WR were pretty much alone.
So are our WR and TE so bad and Seattle that good our our D is bad and Seattle is good.
And i dont want to hear about lost turnovers batlle anymore. This offense has talent to score on that Seattle defense 40 points with ease, just be yourself and dont be afraid of them. I dont have many hopes in this D.

Well, not meaning to sound too negative but I don't like the "not scoring on purpose" thing either, especially against a tough defense in a short field situation. Getting in is far from a gimme.

There shouldn't have been any wasted or free downs in that situation, and the only 2 real plays they got off was a handoff to Blount and the poorly executed fade, which I consider to be much lower odds wise due to the involvement of Kam Chancellor.

No, I totally understand your point and dont think its particularly negative.

My thought process was that BB & co were actually increasing the chance of overtime by making sure if we score that it is most likely the final meaningful play of the game. And as tough the Seattle D is, if you have the ball down within 2-3 yards of the opponents endzone and have 3 downs to get it done I'd say the odds are in your favor to get it done.

I honestly was expecting play-action on third down. They hammered Seattle with LGB so much and he was just 1-2 inches away from a TD on second down. With all the added mobility Brady has shown, I was even ready for a QB keeper but I guess they are keeping that one for a game that really matters.

In a certain way that's what the regular season is for if you are on the Patriots. It's like a beta test of your product trying to find and correct as many issues as possible before the real launch in January. We really are privileged.

they are a dirty team. last week it was sherman, this week was cam...

For as much cap space they have invested in that defense they better be good.

We had Blount and all of our timeouts with less about 40 seconds left at the one yard line.

Think about how much lack of confidence BB had on his defense to be thinking "drain the clock" at that point.

Didn't realize our defense only has created 7 turnovers through 9 games. That's near the bottom of the league. Going to have to improve on that going forward. Hopefully, playing San Fran and the Jets will help out.
