Ed Reed suspended 1 game for repeat violations of hits to head of defenseless players

Why are they wasting their time with this - Give 'em flags already and eliminate the need for helmets. Maybe even replace the ball with a frisbee.

The Brees hit was an intentional forearm to the head and completely unnecessary.

The other 2 hits (Branch and Sanders), Reed lowered his head before contact. People are focusing on the person being hit, but they should really pay attention to the defender. If Reed keeps his head up and makes the exact same hit, he probably still gets a penalty on Branch (hard to avoid that unless you aim right or left of center) and doesn't get a flag on Sanders...and he would be playing this Sunday.

Kids are taught to see what they hit. I told my son before he started playing football that if I ever saw him make contact with his head down, it would be the last down he played. Helmets are for protection and are not weapons.

You want to fix this without fundamentally changing the game? Call unsportsmanlike conduct penalties against anyone (offense or defense) that is in motion with their head down. Start calling it in the preseason (those games are disasters anyway) and you will quickly see players adapt.

At the same time, eliminate the "helmet-to-helmet" call. If both players have their eyes up and their facemasks meet, no problem. You will still have the "blow to the head" call for guys who go high with their arms/shoulders, but I think the calls we all hate (like the bogus Fitz penalty a couple weeks ago) will be eliminated.

Wow. Ted Cottrell lifts Ed Reed's suspension, fines him just $50,000 fine. Guess that's why there is an appeals process.

Judy Battista ?@judybattista
Appeals process at work: Ted Cottrell wipes out Ed Reed's one game suspension, fined him $50,000.

Aaron Wilson ?@RavensInsider
Ed reed wins suspension appeal will be fined 50000

Adam Schefter ?@AdamSchefter
Ted Cottrell reduced Ed Reed's one-game suspension to only a $50,000 fine. Wow...

Good. Hopefully this will encourage the Ommissioner to pull his head out of his ass on the punishment front.

I won't hold my breath on that, though.

Ed Reed's talent has declined and he is trying to compensate by laying defenseless players out. He is a dirty player and so isn't Pollard. Those 2 running around injuring players isn't good for the game. I think they should of upheld the suspension.

So you haven't watched much of the Ravens defense then. Thank you for sharing your opinion with us, though.

Yeah, Reed is not the first guy I think of when considering making an example of head shots. Pollard, Ryan Clark and LaRon Landry would be better targets for the league. From the Pats perspective, I would think Spikes should be careful about aiming high heading into the playoffs. Reed is a sympathetic figure and has a relatively clean league rep. Spikes...not so much.

Re: Ed Reed suspended 1 game for repeat violations of hits to head of defenseless pla

I saw on television today that Reed had a complete lack of remorse, or acknowledgement for the rule changes in regards to blows to the head on a defenseless player.

I would assume that the league is not pleased at all with his public statements, and will take that into account the next time he is fined for another one of these hits.

Regardless of whether or not he should have been fined or suspended, it's obvious that he is not getting the league's message.
