Drew Brees has retired

The contract is "worth" $140m.

Anyone still want to pretend that the cap is not crap?

The cap is doing its job. It keeps the massive market teams from dominating the League by spending 2 or 3 times what the others do. Yes, there are machinations that teams use to fudge it a bit from year to year, but those 10% variances in salary spend are the proof that the cap isn't crap. When teams have to get this creative to spend a little more in a given year, the cap is doing its job.

It is satisfying that the people of NOLA love Brees far move than they do Peyton or the Manning family in general.

Might have changed history if Brees went to Miami and Saban stayed in Miami. Would have been a tougher road.
Brady/Belichick versus Brees/Saban --- for a decade. Would have been fun.

Who's arguing that the cap's not doing its job? The point is, and has been, that the cap is mostly just an accounting gimmick.

Don’t really see how that’s true. Tons of players are cut all the time because they won’t fit under the cap. If it was just accounting sorcery, I’m sure the Pats would keep Joe Thuney, but it isn’t and they won’t.

They're being cut because teams don't want to take the necessary steps to keep the player. The Patriots aren't keeping Joe Thuney because they don't want to pay Joe Thuney the amount of money that Joe Thuney wants to get paid. If they were willing to pay Joe Thuney the amount of money that Joe Thuney wants to get paid, they have more than enough money, and cap space, to do so.

And the "gotta pay other players" argument doesn't hold water, given that the Patriots have such a large amount of cap space available.

Idk, you look at the Dak Prescott deal where he gets, what $66 or $75M the first year but only $20M counts towards the cap, and that pretty much cries "accounting gimmick."

Pats could easily keep Thuney if they wanted to.

Thuney was just an example. The point is that a ton of guys are cut every year because of the cap, it’s not make believe

Once he realized Brady, the endless vampire, hasn’t lost an inch of his abilities and that the TD and Yards records are gone, this was the only reasonable decision!

Kidding aside, fantastic player, if the Saints had a bit more luck in the past 5 years, he could have won a second. Great career nevertheless.

I know you're kidding but it possibly contributed to the decision. Imagine Brady saying he's retiring. Would Brees play a few to take the TD record back? possibly............

Incredible longevity, but overshadowed by Brady. Incredible single season stats, but overshadowed by Manning. Was a winner, but his team was kneecapped by Goodell at its peak.

One of the greats... isn't unreasonable to put him on the Mount Rushmore of QBs.

How was he overshadowed by Manning in single season or regular season stats? You mean the record?

I would say the fact he's gotten so many more 5k yard seasons etc tells me he's well ahead of Manning in regular season stats.

Well the cap can be manipulated from year to year. You can pull forward or push back between years with various shenanigans. but the bill remains the same, and always comes due.

The bill does not always come due. That is part of why the system on non-guaranteed contracts works, in fact.

Several people mentioned Brees almost going to Miami. It wasn't over money or favoring Culpepper, at least according to Sabin. Miami's owner required a green light on Brees from the Miami team doctor, and he wouldn't go along, having concerns about Brees's shoulder.

One of the most overrated QB of all time. Dude won 1 ring and most people think he's one of the goats while he was stat padding in a dome his entire career. last 4 years he straight up chocked.

Get ready to be flamed by the Drew Brees Fan Club that exists on this forum. Brees was a really good QB. Ultimately, though, he never got me interested enough to watch him because, I think we all know, he was never on that rarified plane of greatness.

But be careful....many will quickly point out that this is not the time or the place to express an opnion about this matter, and that this forum exists so that we can respect Brees and be very leery of hurting his feelings, in case he or a family member is reading this.

Drew Brees has achieved the loftiest status of all in NOLA, he will be revered forever in that City.

He will be surpassed by Brady in just about every passing statistic, but being #2 is not all that bad.

In what ways does this satisfy you?

Rewards a guy for adopting the city as his own, and loving it, while working his *** off as a player for 20 years and bringing them a championship.
In contrast to the home grown Manning family business which doesn't show up with that much integrity or local pride.

NOLA chooses its heroes well.

The phrase "the cap is crap" isn't a criticism of the nuances of the cap. It is a condemnation of it overall, a statement that the cap is a failure. And it isn't.
