Being in a new offense that is effective and successful is better than being in the same old thoughtless, Mickey Mouse offense.
yes it is. The point is he's had to learn 4 new offences in the last 4 years, so that's a lot to put on a young guys plate, especially when you couple it with the fact he's played with a terrible supporting cast his last year in college, and first year in the pros.

Exactly.

Four OCs in four years. Give the kid a break, FFS.

EDIT: Let's make that 3.5 OCs.

The bottom line is that the starters have yet to PRACTICE together on the field at the same time, let alone play a scrimmage or game

So we really don't know what we've got - but Maye is the least of my worries (OL is a bigger one!)

Be zen with the fact that in Goodell's NFL that lacks the practice and conditioning of yesteryear, combined with the extra game, means that September is effectively a continuation of the pre-season.

I don’t see it as a disadvantage as much as a I see it as it would have been nice if he had last year in this offense too

Every QB is in a difference offense in the pros that in college

His do you figure 4 in 4 years, wasn’t Chip Lindsay his OC at UNC both years? EDIT never mind AI strikes again and tells me Lindsay was the OC when Maye became the starter then when I ask who it was it 2022 it changes its answer. Lol

I've read more than a few atricles that talked about NC's offense changing Drake's 2 years. Too lazy to find those articles, but I know 100% I read that more than once.

Remember he played with Boutte last year as well. Right now hes in the top 3.

I forgot about Boutte for some reason, and he'd be ahead of Chism on any WR depth chart.

But the main point remains. Maye is a very inexperienced and young QB who is learning a new and very complex offense with a group of WR's who are ALSO totally inexperienced in running this offense.

All this makes it so STUPID to cry failure and wonder if we should "worry about" our QB every time he makes a misstep in a practice. THIS is the exact place I WANT him to **** up... at practice! There are actually people here who have declared him a bust already.... in - this - thread.

This thread needs to DIE

Based solely on what I've seen of Maye in limited action this preseason...............

This thread is like the written version of NBC Sports Boston's "Early Edtion" where the host Trenni Casey seemingly begins each 6pm episode with a question: "Is it time to be worried about ____________of the Patriots?"

A couple of comments on the comments.

1. Every time someone mentions Mac's "noodle arm" like it was the reason for his failure I wince. That noodle arm still threw for 3800 yds in his rookie year. That was NOT the reason for his failure here. It didn't help, but it was his continued bad decision making and his failure to deal with the adversity that came his way after Josh left, and his lack of toughness and mental discipline, much more than his arm that doomed him here.

Lets see how he does in SF. So far we've heard mixed results.

2. I don't know why anyone should worry about how the offense looks at this point and how any individual looks. Given how few reps our purported starting group has taken together it's amazing to me we are even getting out of the huddle well. In fact it's impressive that they have had so few unforced penalties thus far in the first 2 games.

This offense needs first to find out just who is ON the starting offense, and then that group needs a few thousand reps over the next 3 months before we can even START to see what the potential of this offense is before we wallow in any negativity.

3. I would be THRILLED if we get to 5-5 over the first part of the season. If I see that and relative health, then the playoffs are in reach.

4. Finally - Let's us not forget that a big part of that 10 win season in that 2001 season was the fact that we won the TO battle (22-29) And it didn't hurt that we had a top 10 defense that year.

Getting TO's and not making them are CRITICAL to winning. 14 teams make the NFL playoffs (too many if you ask me) and all but 2 of them won the TO battle. You don't have to be a genius to see how important that stat is.

Bradshaw to Big Ben
Elway to Manning
Aikman to .....

I think it's fair to reset his timeline now with the new regime, given his young age, but no more resets from here.

I think decent to good is what we should hope for. To your point, Favre to Rodgers is rare.

If we found our next great qb within 5 years of Brady and 6 rings we’re well ahead of the curve. As fans we should be prepared to wait a while, but hopefully we got extra lucky

Daniels was for me by far the best QB coming out of last year's draft. I viewed Maye as a boom or bust pick. I still believe that's true but I've seen enough positive attributes to give him more time and unless he's Ryan Leaf types of bad that extends beyond just this year.

It's year two and he is already on HC and OC #2 which is never a receipe for instant success. Is he missing open receivers? 100%. Is his ball security still crap? 100%

But he also has what should be at least a somewhat better OL, the WR talent is better and deeper and Josh should help to accentuate his strengths.

So I'm no more concerned. than when we drafted him. I'm maybe a tick more inclinded to believe he'll at least be a top half of all starters if not this year then next. Top 5? Not even close to thinking that yet. Prove it.

I watched both of Macs preseason SF games. I think he looked good. Good enough to be a solid NFL backup. Shanahan’s coaching will help.

100% agree

And, also, it is much too early to be in any way sure that he will be any better than 5 other QB's drafted last year in the first round.

We have drafted a QB with good skills and an OK start. He now has a good chance to develop. It will too early to worry until at least the end of the coming season, and even then, he will be our leader for 2026.

I am concerned because last year was a set of intentional routes and Maye could just bounce through the progressions, but with Josh and all of the option routes that are determined based on coverage adds a ton of complexity to the offense.

Maye will improve but he is currently having to think about everything he is doing, on top of being very cautious.

I also feel like that is the reason that this offense goes through the slot because they generally face off coverage and have a free release and are able to make quick decisions based on leverage.

The bottom line is that the starters have yet to PRACTICE together on the field at the same time, let alone play a scrimmage or game
The starters have been practicing on the same field all training camp. I am not sure what you are talking about.

“Concerned” is a tough word. I never thought he was worthy of the #3 selection so my only “concern” is that I may have been right.

Definitely very possible and should not be ruled out that Maye isn't the guy.

History tells us to be skeptical. Finding your franchise QB is very hard. The Bills are a great example of that. Or the Raiders who still haven't found their franchise QB since Gannon played for them over 20 years ago.
I think we can be concerned about Maye without giving up on him. He's still very young.

I put a 25 year curse on the Raiduhs in Feb of 2002. That means that they have 2 more years of losing before it runs out. I might not tuck it to them with another curse or maybe I will. TBD.
