Obviously, a player could fall in our laps, and we would take the high-value play even though the position is not of real need.
=============================
Given the above, my priorities and shopping list for the first four rounds include: DE, ILB, OLB, WR, S, OG, OT. Seven picks and seven needs is a nice match.
I think you're right. Looking at the positions which are pretty much "set", right now we have:
- QB: Brady, O'Connell and Gut. No need for a draft prospect. Possibly a cheap vet signing like Ramsey if the price is right.
- TE: Watson, Baker and Thomas. 2 PS guys. No need to spend a pick here.
- CB: Hobbs, Bodden, Springs, Wheatley and Wilhite. Who would have thunk it? A really nice deep group of CBs. No stars, but much more solid than last year.
That leaves the following areas:
- S: Would really like a long-term starter opposite Meriweather. Sean Smith, Louis Delmas, William Moore or Patrick Chung would be nice.
- LB: Would ideally like one OLB and one SILB (and perhaps even a veteran at OLB as well, though I don't see how we could find the cap room). At least one LB seems to be a day 1 priority. We could possibly use 2 of our day 1 picks here.
- DL: Would ideally like one DE prospect to at least replace Mike Wright, and one DT prospect as a true NT backup for Vince Wilfork. Neither needs to be a day one priority.
- OL: Would ideally like one OT prospect to eventually take over LT from Matt Light, and one interior lineman. A lot of OL contracts are up after 2009, and there is some age showing on the line with Light and Neal.
- WR: We could use one developmental guy here with at least the potential to become a #3 WR behind Moss and Welker, and possibly even as a long-term #1 in a few years. Doesn't have to be a day 1 pick unless the right player falls.
So I count 8 picks: 1 S, 2 LB, 2 OL, 2 DL, and 1 WR. I wouldn't mind seeing us draft a punter as well in the late rounds to compete with Hanson.
