Obviously, a player could fall in our laps, and we would take the high-value play even though the position is not of real need.
=============================
Given the above, my priorities and shopping list for the first four rounds include: DE, ILB, OLB, WR, S, OG, OT. Seven picks and seven needs is a nice match.

I look for a OT or OG with one of the 1st couple of picks. Or maybe if one of the DL drops to 23, then they would grab him.

I think you're right. Looking at the positions which are pretty much "set", right now we have:

- QB: Brady, O'Connell and Gut. No need for a draft prospect. Possibly a cheap vet signing like Ramsey if the price is right.

- TE: Watson, Baker and Thomas. 2 PS guys. No need to spend a pick here.

- CB: Hobbs, Bodden, Springs, Wheatley and Wilhite. Who would have thunk it? A really nice deep group of CBs. No stars, but much more solid than last year.

That leaves the following areas:

- S: Would really like a long-term starter opposite Meriweather. Sean Smith, Louis Delmas, William Moore or Patrick Chung would be nice.

- LB: Would ideally like one OLB and one SILB (and perhaps even a veteran at OLB as well, though I don't see how we could find the cap room). At least one LB seems to be a day 1 priority. We could possibly use 2 of our day 1 picks here.

- DL: Would ideally like one DE prospect to at least replace Mike Wright, and one DT prospect as a true NT backup for Vince Wilfork. Neither needs to be a day one priority.

- OL: Would ideally like one OT prospect to eventually take over LT from Matt Light, and one interior lineman. A lot of OL contracts are up after 2009, and there is some age showing on the line with Light and Neal.

- WR: We could use one developmental guy here with at least the potential to become a #3 WR behind Moss and Welker, and possibly even as a long-term #1 in a few years. Doesn't have to be a day 1 pick unless the right player falls.

So I count 8 picks: 1 S, 2 LB, 2 OL, 2 DL, and 1 WR. I wouldn't mind seeing us draft a punter as well in the late rounds to compete with Hanson.

They have put themselves into positon to ignore need. They'll take the best player that comes their way rd 1 or they'll move up to get someone they have already targeted. We have priorities as fans. Their in the position of getting the best players they can on draft day. I would say that comes without priorities attatched.

definitely. and considering the amount of picks we have, we can afford to do this

I think BB just gave Sanders a three year contract for starter money. We'll probably draft a safety....in the mid rounds to groom and develop.

Then on the other hand. I think safeties are the new linebackers for BB - he's developing a hard-on (pardon me) for the position and the versatility it requires. So we may draft four safeties on Day 1!

There seems to be top quality at safety available between pick 20 and pick 60. I know I should have a favorite, but I would be happy with any of the five safeties that Belichick chooses that are projected in this range: Smith, Delmas, Chung, Moore, and Rashad Johnson. And a strong safety that looked like a linebacker would be fine with me.

If you break it up into needs per year (round 1 being able to contribute year 1, round 2 year 2, etc)
Needs (starter lost):
year/round 1 - OLB (Vrabel)
year/round 2 - DE (Seymour, Green), DT (Wilfork), CB (Hobbs, Bodden), OG (Neal, Mankins), OT (Kaczur), TE (Watson, Thomas), ILB (Bruschi)

The only real need at a starting position today is OLB which should be fulfilled through the draft as there are no starting OLB out in FA for a good price.

Next year is a real mess. The biggest loses (2 players at a position) are DE, CB, and OG. I'm taking out TE because I do not think draft then carry 4 TEs. Any one of those positions could be drafted in round 2 to grow this year then take over starting next year.

DT, OT, and ILB should finish out next year's needs in round 3.

Depending on the players available to them they could switch DT to round 2, and CB to round 3 if they think a certain player will fall or how confident they are in resigning a player (ie Bodden or Hobbs)

I do not see WR or S as a day 1 pick right now as the starters are in place at least for 2 more years. If you take a day 1 pick you want them to start sooner then later.

You typically dont find 'top quality' S between 20 and 60. And even if you did not in this draft. Safety is a need of ours so I tend to think we all look at S a little less than objectively. Personally I wish there were a diamond in the rough but realistically they all have plus's and minus's, or pulse's and misdemeanors.

I agree here.

IMO I would like to see the following:

S bigger size SS, ideal Rodney style & size player.

ILB, have we really replaced Ted J? Big inside run stuffer to pair with Mayo. Maualuga?

OLB, leave that to Bill, perhaps Kruger or the Sintim?

OG & T players to develop. In Dante we trust.

Guy to develop as #3? Don't have a feel here. Speed? Single coverage a lot with Moss & Welker on the opposite side.

There are three high priority draft targets:

ILB - Mayo is a lock. Guyton is solid as #3, though he might be more. The need is another young fellow to groom under Bruschi in what's likely to be his last season.

S - Reserve Safety to build up the depth behind Sanders and Meriweather.

OLB - Crable wasn't known for his pass rush, neither was Redd or Craig. Wood is reportedly a good pass rusher in practice, we'll see if they get him off the mark this season. TBC was noted for his pass rush in college, and he did okay his final season before his move to San Francisco, but if he's in for more than passing downs it's because he made great strides in a short time. The challenge is to find a 3 down OLB who can rush the passer.

After that, I'm looking for a young WR to groom for when Randy retires.

A reserve DE and a reserve NT.

And a reserve OL to groom behind Neal.

P, LS, Camp QB, some CB, RB, WR help to try out for the Practice Squad.

I certainly agree with what you posted.

However, perhaps we should be giving a DE backup higher priority. After all we ahve only Warren signed through next year and it takes a year to develop a DE. I would expect to lose Seymour or Green next year.

Perhaps, as you might have noted in my mock I did address DL. I just don't think this is a particularly strong draft for DL and rather then force the issue, take one and try to find some UDFA talent. If BB was really worried, I think he'd have made a run for Mike Wright, so there's probably something else in the works.

This a thread on draft priorities right?

How about OLB, DE and OT....... that's what a mid first round pick and 3 excellent second rounds picks should go to. The core of your football team.

My lame .02
