Draft Game 1/26/11- the first try

love it...that would be a great draft imo. Austin Pettis would be a great add to the Pats. He is a player

That is a very good mock for the Patriots and for what I know now about the players, I'd be happy with that.

I like Houston and Havili but the other picks are questionable IMO considering there is no 3-4 DE in relevant rounds.

Ingram - Too high for RB Could be true, but I'm starting to become enamored with Ingram. I also think RB is a huge need at this point.
Wisniewski - OT and OG are higher priorities than C. Wisniewski is the best center in the draft, but he also can play OG. I was thinking to start him there and next year take over for Koppen who's contract is up
Danny Watkins will be 27 yrs old later this year and is still raw talent. He's older than half the current OL. I didn't know that. Makes him look like Kaczur 2.0. He is the type of OL Dante loves tho
Marcus Cannon is projected to be a Guard not a tackle. We need guards dont we? Anyone who can play multiple positions will have higher value. Dante also loves his huge OL i.e. Wesley Britt
Sash - We need a FS as James Sanders, Chung, and Sergio Brown are all SS. makes sense if you feel they've already replaced McGowan
Parker - Until the East-West game was considered a UDFA He was rated much higher in the ratings board we were given
Brown - Has progressivly gotten worse over his career. lacks discipline. This is a pure high risk/reward pick. No doubt about it.

I feel obligated to supply more detail into why I made these picks

Very nice indeed. IF Jordan can really be an every-down DE, I really like how this all comes together. I'd much rather try to develop a mid-late center or two for the next year as Koppen plays out his contract rather than overdraft Wisniewski, who has trouble in the shotgun. (Maybe consider an RB in place of the 2nd WR, though?)

Perhaps Kendall Hunter RB Okla St.

I really like that Vincent Brown catches the ball with his hands. If its within his range, he is coming down with the ball. Titus Young is a polished receiver and his routes are impeccable.

DeMarco Murray is going to be a nice all purpose back. Remember Keith Byars and Larry Centers? Would you like to have those guys from back in their heyday?

I think this kid possesses those type of skills.

I agree and he could end up a better runner than either. I haven't seen much love for him around the board but I'm very high on him.

Well I would have first gone all in and got Woodley as our OLB casting off Light and Mankins but the draft may be more important if FA comes afterwards. That said--assume we are going after Woodley
Trade 17 for 22 and 86
22-DE Watt-5 technique replacement for Seymour
28-OT Carimi-Both from Wisconsin-Vollmer to LT
33-G-Pouncey-we love UF guys!-Mankins spot
60-OLB Carter--UNC--unique athlete-Small/fast designated pass rusher
74-traded for a 2nd in 12 and 142
86-traded for a 2nd in 12
92-traded for a 2nd in 12
123-RB-Devine WV-4.3 burner
142-RB-Ridley LSU--Thumper back
156-CB-BURNEY--my Binkie and another UNC guy
184-G-Hurd HUGE guy from Uconn for practice squad

I think this would address the lines, the OLBs, RBs and sets us up pretty well if we cant resign our OL. 3 #2s for next year, 4 players in the top 60, 3 starters and a situational guy. The RB by commitee has more members and watch Burney rise....no way he is a 5th rd pick.

17 Cameron Jordan
28 Houston
33 Wiesnewski
60 Murray
74 Ballard
92 Acho
123 greg Little
156 Ziemba
184 Fulco

Two DEs, Two 3-4 OLBs, Two G/Cs a RT and a WR that can beat a press at the LOS. And a RB that can run and catch.

I'd be very happy with this. Fills needs, has players with upside, long range planning. Hoorah!

Even though tackle is not a huge need if Light returns, you're going to have a very hard time passing on players like Carimi and Solder in this draft, who are such great values (Solder at #17 and Carimi at #28). In many other drafts, these guys go higher. Carimi might actually be good for guard initially.

Lets' start the annual series of draft games.Don't worry about looking foolish, I do it for a living and am still standing.

So here's how it will work this time.

Using the list below, make your Patriots picks. For picks 17,28,& 33 you can choose a player ranked no more than 3 slots ahead (#17 you can go up to #14 but no higher and so on and so forth) After those picks you can go up 5 places but no higher.

NFL Draft - 2011 Draft Prospects - CBSSports.com - NFLDraftScout.com

Here are the Patriots picks as of now:17,28,33,60,74,92,123,156,&184

After you have made those picks, you can do trades as long as they make sense using the trade value board.

The Huddle Report - NFL Draft Research and Analysis

NO MOCKING ANYONE'S MOCK UNTIL YOU HAVE POSTED YOUR MOCK SO IT CAN BE EQUALLY MOCKED.

There are no winners or losers unless you are a Jets fan. this is just to see where the thinking is for players at this time.
I disagree with some of the ratings, however, got to use something.

17 Nate Solder T Colorado
28 Cameron Jordan DE California
33 Jon Baldwin WR Pittsburgh – would be a steal here
60 Danny Watkins G Baylor – may be too old for BB
74 Ras-I Dowling FS Virginia
92 Jerrell Powe NT Mississippi
123 Brooks Reed OLB Arizona
156 Ricky Elmore OLB Arizona
184 David Carter DE UCLA

For the sake of simplicity=No Trades

17-JJ Watt-DE
28-Gabe Carimi-OT
33-Jimmy Smith-CB
60-Danny Watkins-OG
74-Christian Ballard-DE/DT
92-Tom Keiser-OLB
123-Kelvin Sheppard-ILB
156-Jake Kirkpatrick-OC
184-Wayne Daniels-OLB

All picks are in High Priority Positions with the exception of ILB Kelvin Sheppard who I could make room for on any defense.
Offensive skill players have no place in my draft this year. Build that area from UDFAs, Trades, Street Scrubs...whatever.

Not sure I entirely agree with this. There's no certainty that Kaczur makes it back whole, if at all. Back injuries are especially bad for linemen and often become chronic issues. And Kaczur will turn 32 just as camp starts. Light will turn 33 in June and will be entering his 11th season. The odds of both these guys continuing to play at an elite level for most, much less all, of a season are starting to dip below 50%. Meanwhile, we have only LeVoir, Ojinnaka and Maneri as our other backups. Sure, if everything goes fairly well, we could get through another season in fine shape. IF we don't suffer any disasters.

However, in this draft, there are at least a couple potentially very good (Vollmer-level, at least) OTs who seem likely to fall into the range of picks we already have. We might not have the same opportunity in the next draft or two and, by then, the OT situation might have gone from moderately iffy to dire emergency.

If, in this draft, we take a Carimi, Solder, Castonzo (whoever - take your pick) and give him the Vollmer treatment (a few rookie starts at both ends of the line), then we know we're good to go for a few years and maybe even extend the careers of Light and/or Kaczur a bit by lessening their workloads.

60 Danny Watkins G Baylor – may be too old for BB

Nick Kaczur was almost 26 when he was drafted, so I don't think age is a disqualifier. If he can get, say, 6+ years out of Watkins, that'd be a win.

Absolutely agree.

#17 Ryan Kerrigan, OLB/DE Purdue
#28 Gabe Carimi, OT, Wisconsin
#33 Muhammad Wilkerson, DL Temple
#60 Danny Watkins, OG Baylor
#74 Ras-I Dowling, DB Virginia
#92 Titus Young, WR Boise State
#124 Bilal Powell, RB, Louisville
#156 Jake Kirkpatrick, C TCU
#184 Derrick Locke, RB Kentucky

Watkins is older at 26, but did he ever impress me with his NASTINESS! Wow! I love nasty players. We need nasty guys like him on the O Line.

Best mock I have seen yet except for the Dowling pick.

Yeah. I'm frankly underwhelmed by the entire slate of RBs in this class. I just went for heft with Thomas.

There are some other guys at other positions available (currently) around the #74 slot, but I sorta felt like I already had those positions better covered (reserving the right to change my mind several times - ).

I am with you about the RB position.

However I saw Hunter doing some exceptional blocking and catching at the senior bowl. If he does not have a history of fumbling and runs well, I suspect he could be on BB's radar.

I think this kid possesses those type of skills.

That might be true for the four games a year he is not injured. The guy is as tough as a banana.

Its way early and I suspect these players will move up or down the draft board ... but here goes!

17 Cameron Jordan DE Cal (Don't think he will be here at 17)
28 Gabe Carimi OT Wisconsin (I would take him at 17 too)
33 TRADE down to #59 for a 5th round pick this year and 3rd round next year
Danny Watkins OG Baylor (BB loves taking OT and making them OG)
60 Ahmad Black SS Florida
74 Kendrick Ellis NT Hampton
92 Titus Young WR Boise St
123 John Moffitt OG/OC Wisconsin ( saw him shotgun snap at Senior Bowl practice - he is also nasty like Watkins and played next to Carimi)
146 (from #33 trade) Vincent Brown WR San Diego St
184 Ricky Stanzi QB Iowa (groomed on the Paractice Squad)

I doubt Ellis is on BB's draft board. First he was dismissed from Spurrier's team at SC, then this past season he was suspended for a game for some sort of infraction. BB is not going to bring that type of player into his locker room. Ellis seems destined for Cincy.

Wow! I like that trade with Dallas. Fantastic idea. What happens if Dareus is off the board at #3 to Buffalo (which is where I see him going)? Does BB still make that trade? And who Who?

You won't like the trade much if Dareus is off the board as he is likely to be at 9.

Apparently, he's fumbled a couple handoffs in practice, but both may have been from Stanzi so god only knows whose fault it was.

There seems to be some observational disagreement about Hunter's blocking from guys on site. I saw one comment that Hunter was the best RB at picking up the blitz, then another saying he was obviously overmatched in blocking drills and struggling to get leverage (though it didn't say who that was against), and then a third comment saying he was getting destroyed in passpro. IDK, at 5'7"/199, I'm not sure what anyone would expect him to be able to do against someone like Jordan or what Woodhead might be expected to do against, say, Shaun Ellis.

OTOH, the comments I've read about Hunter's running have been almost universally positive, like quick, elusive, makes guys miss, creates on his own, unexpectedly tough between the tackles, etc. All of which are things that have been said about Woodhead, too.

And that's the thing for me. With his size and skillset, Hunter seems to duplicate what we already have in Woodhead. Having a second Woodhead doesn't seem like a bad thing, and I wouldn't necessarily mind having him as a 4th guy behind Woody, BGE and somebody a little bigger than BGE's 5'11"/215 for straight ahead between the tackles pounding. Those guys tend to wear out a lot quicker, it seems to me, so it would be nice to have more than one.

Not that I'm particularly recommending him, but Daniel Thomas is 6'2"/228 (almost identical in size to Fred Taylor), hasn't had a serious injury in the past couple years (as far as I can tell), seems likely to be no slower or less elusive than BGE, and he might be a bit more prolific receiver than BGE. And, we might be able to pick him up with our #60 or even our #74 (and still get Hunter later).
