Well, they were able to play a weak pass rushing team and overall had a better game on the line. They also got Lowe back at LT letting Onwenu go to guard and Jacobs to RT.
The main weak spot this weak was at center. Maybe Sidy Dow can become the center? They actually had 2 great pass protection plays, picking up blitzes, plenty of time. First time I've given a great level of pass blocking. The #'s add up to more than the pass plays due to multiple fails on 1 play. If 2 blockers failed badly, they each got 1, if it was blame partly on 1 and partly on another then I give them 1/2 a blame.
Most games this year they've started out OK and been bad in the second half. This week they started bad and improved. Very first series, Onwenu and Leverett fail on 2nd play followed by Leverett on the next play with Jordan also missing a pick-up on a stunt.
I had Lowe down for zero negative plays! His holding call on the running play was non-existent, a bad call.
He kept his guy far away from QB most plays. Again Miami does not have great rushers but he did his job today.
Jacobs was better being on the right side and not having Bosa. He sets up better than Wallace, so might be more ready to play than Wallace would have been if not injured. He can't compete with the elite rusher but hopefully we don't see many of them and today was a sign he can at least be average out there at right tackle. Not convinced yet but a solid enough game.
Jordan is a grinder, plays a solid game almost every week. He missed a stunt pickup but otherwise was good. Onwenu is much better at guard.
AVP did several mass protection plays, had some quick passes in the game plan, overall did a better job helping the line. They ran really well and feel they could have run much more than they did. The passes at the end of the half when they could have run the ball and taken time off was an error.
Also, the last 2 plays of the game Miami blitz them and AVP and Jacoby ad the offense did not adjust. The third down play they overloaded the right side of the line, 4 rushers on 3 blockers, while they had the rusher form the other side occupy the LG so he could not help.
The RB goes out for a pass, Jacoby needs to see the blitz, have him stay in and block the extra rusher if he comes and then go out. He did not check to that, RB stayed on the non-blitzing side and the LB picked him up as they were rushing less on that side. Is it on the line? I rate it an OK for the line. Miami had 1 more guy than was possible to block on that side. The free guy is on Jacoby.
The 4th down play, they rushed 7 vs 6 blockers. Again, the line blocked 6. Knowing Miami was likely to blitz the routes all went to the end zone, I know 4th down but there was a chance for a first around the 2, and having 1 guy short to catch and run and beat the man defenders should have been an option knowing a blitz was highly likely. Just a poor play call and Jacoby did not make any audible to adjust. So on paper that's 2 pressures, which will increase the % of pressures but neither of those plays could the line have dne anymore than they did.
A Big problem that Jacoby brings to the table is his ack of mobility. Miami left running lanes for the QB multiple times, they did not stay in rush lanes often.
Oven the last all-out blitz, if he can make 1 guy miss and run he has a scramble drill.
Jayden Danels had 4 free rushers today.
Resulted in 4 first downs, 2/2 for 78 yards passing and 2 scrambles for 36 yards. The 2nd best runner in college last year was Drake Maye.
You have 4 free rushers on Jacoby it's likely 2 sacks and 2 incompletions and the line is to blame.
I mention it this game because Maye or Daniels had tons of running opportunities if they played Miami today.
I don't know what you do with the center position, but they may have different guy struggle each week with this line. Jacobs or Lowe may struggle against better outside rushers and Leverett will struggle against good inside rushers. I'm hoping the fact Lowe was good today maybe he can hold his own going forward and Jacobs is just a better fit at RT. Not buying either at this point but at least there is some hope after today.
Running backs and run blocking was very good overall. A few plays or players I could nitpick, but at almost 8 yards a rush I think not much to say other than they should have run it a little bit more.
Will review QB and WR's when all-22 comes out.
