Well, they were able to play a weak pass rushing team and overall had a better game on the line. They also got Lowe back at LT letting Onwenu go to guard and Jacobs to RT.
The main weak spot this weak was at center. Maybe Sidy Dow can become the center? They actually had 2 great pass protection plays, picking up blitzes, plenty of time. First time I've given a great level of pass blocking. The #'s add up to more than the pass plays due to multiple fails on 1 play. If 2 blockers failed badly, they each got 1, if it was blame partly on 1 and partly on another then I give them 1/2 a blame.

Most games this year they've started out OK and been bad in the second half. This week they started bad and improved. Very first series, Onwenu and Leverett fail on 2nd play followed by Leverett on the next play with Jordan also missing a pick-up on a stunt.

I had Lowe down for zero negative plays! His holding call on the running play was non-existent, a bad call.
He kept his guy far away from QB most plays. Again Miami does not have great rushers but he did his job today.
Jacobs was better being on the right side and not having Bosa. He sets up better than Wallace, so might be more ready to play than Wallace would have been if not injured. He can't compete with the elite rusher but hopefully we don't see many of them and today was a sign he can at least be average out there at right tackle. Not convinced yet but a solid enough game.
Jordan is a grinder, plays a solid game almost every week. He missed a stunt pickup but otherwise was good. Onwenu is much better at guard.
AVP did several mass protection plays, had some quick passes in the game plan, overall did a better job helping the line. They ran really well and feel they could have run much more than they did. The passes at the end of the half when they could have run the ball and taken time off was an error.

Also, the last 2 plays of the game Miami blitz them and AVP and Jacoby ad the offense did not adjust. The third down play they overloaded the right side of the line, 4 rushers on 3 blockers, while they had the rusher form the other side occupy the LG so he could not help.

The RB goes out for a pass, Jacoby needs to see the blitz, have him stay in and block the extra rusher if he comes and then go out. He did not check to that, RB stayed on the non-blitzing side and the LB picked him up as they were rushing less on that side. Is it on the line? I rate it an OK for the line. Miami had 1 more guy than was possible to block on that side. The free guy is on Jacoby.

The 4th down play, they rushed 7 vs 6 blockers. Again, the line blocked 6. Knowing Miami was likely to blitz the routes all went to the end zone, I know 4th down but there was a chance for a first around the 2, and having 1 guy short to catch and run and beat the man defenders should have been an option knowing a blitz was highly likely. Just a poor play call and Jacoby did not make any audible to adjust. So on paper that's 2 pressures, which will increase the % of pressures but neither of those plays could the line have dne anymore than they did.

A Big problem that Jacoby brings to the table is his ack of mobility. Miami left running lanes for the QB multiple times, they did not stay in rush lanes often.
Oven the last all-out blitz, if he can make 1 guy miss and run he has a scramble drill.
Jayden Danels had 4 free rushers today.
Resulted in 4 first downs, 2/2 for 78 yards passing and 2 scrambles for 36 yards. The 2nd best runner in college last year was Drake Maye.
You have 4 free rushers on Jacoby it's likely 2 sacks and 2 incompletions and the line is to blame.
I mention it this game because Maye or Daniels had tons of running opportunities if they played Miami today.
I don't know what you do with the center position, but they may have different guy struggle each week with this line. Jacobs or Lowe may struggle against better outside rushers and Leverett will struggle against good inside rushers. I'm hoping the fact Lowe was good today maybe he can hold his own going forward and Jacobs is just a better fit at RT. Not buying either at this point but at least there is some hope after today.
Running backs and run blocking was very good overall. A few plays or players I could nitpick, but at almost 8 yards a rush I think not much to say other than they should have run it a little bit more.
Will review QB and WR's when all-22 comes out.

Pressures allowed from PFF:
C Nick Leverett: 10
RG Mike Onwenu: 4
RT Demontrey Jacobs: 2
LG Michael Jordan: 1
RB Antonio Gibson: 1
TE Hunter Henry: 1
LT Vederian Lowe: 0

On the 3rd down play, the Patriots were late to line-up. Polk was yelling at the sideline to throw a challenge flag and was barely set when the ball was snapped, and he wasn't ready to go. It was just bad situational football and lack of awareness.

Leverett is hurt and probably wouldn’t have been playing if there were another player on the roster before digging down to UDFA practice squad level.

On the bright side, Bryan Hudson is getting extra opportunities in practice as a result so they should have a better idea of what he can give them. AVP said Hudson took all first team reps in Wednesday’s padded practice, which to me seems to imply that Leverett’s limited tag meant he did some individual drills but missed team drills entirely.

I see PFF isn't even bothering to watch games anymore. They just picked a number out of a hat?
When I rewatched I saw 1 play from Lowe that could have gone either way. 100% though Leverett was very bad yesterday. Did you see something different?

I was impressed with Jaquelin Roy yesterday. Did Eric Johnson play yesterday? I did not notice him.

The tackles were about as good as we can expect this year. I didn’t think Jacobs was really much worse at RT than what we are usually seeing from Onwenu at RT. You may as well keep Jacobs there and play Onwenu at RG where he is much much better.

If I recall correctly I believe Michael Jordan has center experience, but I don’t remember him actually repping at the position this summer at all. I think “Plan A” is probably to get Hudson more reps, let Leverett get healthy, and then see who is the better choice. But Jordan may be worth considering once Sow is fully healthy and Jordan is no longer playing on the line, and Strange will eventually be back too. At that point you’d have a ton of guards. See if Jordan or Strange could take over the role if Hudson and Leverett are not really getting it done.

Johnson 0 reps
Roy 22 reps
Pharms 21 reps

Perhaps Roy is being give a shot to replace Johnson.

Jordan has played center, and there have been many opportunities for the team to try him there. I don't think that he was even given pre-season reps at center.

We SHOULD have a starting center, a backup center and an emergency #3 center. I see Jordan as the emergency #3.

I agree that we now have lots of guards. First let's consider Thomas as our 3rd OT. We have no other. Also, it is unlikely that Thomas has a roster spot at OG.

So, we have Jordan/Sow opposite Onwenu/Robinson, with Leverett/Hudson at C. He doesn't count as a roster spot for another 2 weeks.
=========
IMO, we have a possibly "stable" OL that has the possibility of improving as they play more together.
===
I don't see how Strange fits in.

If Hudson moves ahead of Leverett, then great. Leverett is still our backup center.

BOTTOM LINE
Maybe one of the guards can be moved to center. I just don't see it happening in the niddle of a season, unless Strange has been secretly practicing at the position.

Isn't it crazy with the lack of good lineman that Jordan was a practice squad player at the beginning of the year, any team could have signed him to the 53. He's not a star by any means but one of the few guys that have been available and played solidly all year.

As I recall, Jordan was on the Practice Squad. I suppose that someone else might have signed him to their 53. I suspect that he told that the patriots intended to sign him to the 53 after a couple of weeks of elevating him to the roster.
========
In any case, if he wanted to go elsewhere he could have gone. Perhaps he chose the patriots.

Quarterback and Wide Receivers

Jacoby Brissett-
Overall I think this might have been one of his better games. He's a journeyman backup QB, and based on his skill level and his ability he played a solid game He had a better game this week than Aaron Rodgers who was bad on tape for much of that game.
I broke Jacoby's plays down into categories
Great: 2
Good: 16
OK but could have been better: 9
Bad: 7
Rush ruined play: 4

He was much worse the last 2 games before. Pretty big improvement.

The biggest issue compared to Maye is his lack of mobility and trust in the arm. There were opportunities to hit some tighter windows down the field, there were opportunities to avoid the rush and opportunities to run. He's not a playmaker like Maye in that way, Maye has more of a gunslinger mentality. That's just not Jacoby's game.
First 2 plays the rush effected the play, on the second I think if he was quick he had DD and possibly a first down right at the sticks but would have been close. Both plays were on the rush for their failure.

Second series he missed Douglas on a crosser and went to a swing pass to Rhamondre who bulled his way to a first, DD had an easy first down and room to run. Jacoby saw the linebacker behind him but DD outran the LB to the sidelines and if he had just thrown it leading him he might have had a big play up the sideline or tackled after getting the first, either way more chance of success going to DD. Jacoby looked right at him. So that's in the better category, had the better option but still ended with a first down on 3rd down. I could have called that a bad but accomplished the main the goal of getting the 1st so did not, it just could have been better.

He had 2 great plays in the second half, one on a comeback to Boutte thrown before Boutte makes his stop and come back, while he looks covered. These anticipation throws are rare in Jacoby's game. Add in the fact he was getting hit and just a great play. Also, on final drive second to last play he avoids a sack, gets out of pocket and finds Boutte, great job avoiding sack and looking up as he scrambled.

Some of the Bad: IN first half 2nd and 3 tries to go deep when he has open receiver short for first down. Followed that on 3rd and 3 he does one of his pump fakes to Rhamondre and then tries to throw to him late, should have just thrown it right away, he also had Polk open left but never looks that way, continues his trend of not throwing left unless it is short. On last series before half he also had a ball batted down trying to hit open crosser. Ends up getting to 3rd down on that series right before the half ends and gets some mild pressure at his feet, this is one of the plays Maye probably runs outside and gets yardage, Jacoby threw off back foot and throws ball away, kind of panicked as rush was not getting to him yet but felt the pressure, should have escaped pocket.

Second half he had the bootleg play where he had DD deep and threw to end zone instead of across where DD was heading. He did throw just as DD made the break but seeing the defender the logic of going to the end zone was not there, should have had a long completion inside the 5. Later on he throws downfield to double covered Polk when he had DD underneath open. Also throws late to Polk so out of bounds. Had 2 Very Similar plays later but he gets bailed out by penalty. I still put these in bad category because the penalty did not affect the poor decision he made.
He lacks trust to make tighter window throws, continues to miss 1 big play a game that can change the tide of the game and continues to be a bit slow to go thru reads. However, overall he was solid in this game. Maybe his best game.
Teams that have a good interior rusher are going to put them over Leverett, teams with good outside rusher will put him over Jacobs. Texans have both. Which is why this is not the week to start Maye, let's see if those 2 guys can hold up against good rushers.

Demario Douglas-I thought this was his best game. He could have had 12 completions. He had the one missed diving catch over the middle maybe he should have made but Brissett threw it too far in front with way too much speed on it. Should have been a much easier catch.
Jacoby also had a blown coverage on the running back on that play, wide open in the flat. Douglas was open more than any other game.

Jalynn Polk-Thought this was one of his better games also, between him and DD one of them was open on most plays. Seems like when he was covered and DD was open Jacoby thru to Polk. When Polk was open Jacoby never looked his way. Only 1 catch seems crazy though I believe he had 2 flags called on the defense against him as well. Problem is he's open mostly outside on longer throws, Jacoby doesn't like those throws.

Boutte-He's a willing blocker, I thought he was OK. Would like to see more plays geared towards him to see what he really has. He doesn't explode on the tape or anything, looks like a fine #3 receiver. However, he seems to have a knack on extended plays for finding openings. His comeback route for a catch was very well run. I think both Boutte and Polk would do better with Maye over Jacoby.

Henry/Hooper-Wasn't central to the game plan this week, just seemed an afterthought on most plays, Hooper had more plays designed for him it seemed. Henry had some plays he was open and did not get a look, mostly was just not part of the game plan, rarely the first read. Hooper and Henry both do a good job on blocking for run and pass. Hooper just does not separate the same way as Henry, Henry has a knack for finding space, Hooper looks faster, looks like a receiver, but rarely beats coverage. Solid second tight end but not sure he's going to be a big help at receiver overall as was the case this game.

Bourne: Was only in for a few plays, really not much to go on, was not asked to do too much. Will get a better feel for his game next week hopefully.

I wish Baker would get to play, in limited time he's flashed as the 1 guy with some ability to get open vs man better than anyone else, again limited reps against the #2/3 cb's but they lack that guy on the outside that can do that, be nice to see if he can do it consistently. Otherwise, I think they just need that #1 wr to complement Polk who, to me, is a solid #2 receiver. DD has gotten better each game this year, Henry is a solid TE. Tee Higgins or bust!
I do have concerns with Jacobs and Leverett, the 2 linemen not expected to be starting are going to be attacked by the other teams going forward. If they fail it won't matter what the QB and WR do. That also assumes Lowe's really good game this week is something he can repeat against better pass rushers. If Lowe can turn into a quality LT that would be a game changer going forward into next year. Maybe they could draft the #1 receiver and get a RT in the later rounds? Way to early and really wishful thinking after 1 good game against weak pass rushers but a man can dream!

Spot on assessment on Jacoby.

BOTTOM LINE

Saw somewhere that Strange is coming along nicely and should be back. With Onwenu, Sow, and Jordan, I agree with you here.

But maybe he answers your BOTTOM LINE suggestion. I remember he played C at the Senior Bowl and got quite a bit of praise.

I thought Johnson played well-ish last week.

I wouldn't mind seeing Pharms go
They are all ps level guys. We allowed 193 rushing yards to a team averaging 98 with their top RB knocked out on the first drive.
Should be play Flotsam and DT or Jetsom? Doesn’t make much difference they both suck.

Even if Lowe pans out, he is not only going to have to show consistency, but also the ability to stay healthy.

You almost have to draft another LT and go into the next season with Lowe, #1 draft pick, Wallace and a backup.

I don't think you have a choice. What you cant do is throw in with Lowe only to see him get hurt next year.
