So how does the temperature affect tire pressure? There is a basic relationship between the change in temperature and pressure. When the temperature outside the tire changes, it will affect the pressure inside the tire.

For kickers and punters, this drag effect is compounded by the fact that cold footballs become under-inflated—in ESPN experiments (shown below), a football kept at 10°F for an hour had its air pressure reduced by 20 percent—which makes them less bouncy. As a result, they come off a kicker or punter's foot more slowly, and travel a shorter distance. The effect isn't enormous, but it's not negligible: In cold weather games, punts travel three fewer yards on average, and field goal accuracy drops by 1.7 percent.

(1:45 mark)
A football exposed to 10 degree temperatures for an hour lost 20% of it's air pressure.

Or in other news, the Patriots are cheaters because it got cold outside... at night... in January... in New England.

LOL

First off, not a chance in hell they could've sneaked 30+ deflated balls they have for games. 1? 2? How would they even control who got the ball during the game?

This is ridiculous

I can see it now:

"Mr. Goodell, every single football weighed in at 14.99 instead of 15.0. This must be dealt with!"

That was probably the delay when they thought it was a K ball on the field. So one ball was maybe off and the weighed it and by protocol need to submit to league.

But what advantage would a team get from that? Especially since they have no control over what ball is used when.

Sounds like just s procedural thing that Indy guy is trying to spin into a story.

Way to spoil my mood after such a great day by the media. All the national writers are retweeting this. It wont matter if its true or not.The perception will be such that they did it. just disgusting .

You guys realize Schefter would've been ALL OVER THIS if it had any merit, right? The Indy media guy got it. It's called sour grapes.

And what makes anyone think Bill Belichick, Robert Kraft, or anyone we actually care about related to the Patriots would have had anything to do with it? Probably some ball-boy ****ed up slightly and the referees didn't bother to check the balls like they were supposed to.

Honestly, can't anyone just accept that their team lost anymore? Must there always be the search for some excuse?

No, I hear you--and that's why I wanted to clarify my comments.

I just hate to see this become a "thing," when it obviously isn't.

If the refs failed to measure the weight of the balls prior to the start of the game, that's on them---and I highly doubt they'd make such a mistake in the conference championship with Roger Goodell on hand.
Too late. I'm sure it's already a thing. Pretty much anybody can say pretty much anything about the Pats and it instantly becomes a 'thing'.

THIS. It's already into the ether, if the league comes back and says it's untrue, it will just be considered a "cover-up." Regardless of its veracity, this sort of stuff is flat-out embarrassing to this organization. I would be livid if I were Kraft.

This must be why the Patriots scored so little in the 1st half and crushed them on the second half. Sneaky Colts putting in bad balls in the 1st half to slow the Patriots.

FWIW, the only source for this seems to be confidential sources talking to Mr. Kravitz.

Even if I buy into the myth that the Belichick era Patriots are one giant mirage of surveillance intel and Harbaugh-victimizing deceptions, I really- am really- having trouble seeing how they could have pulled this off based on the league procedures that have been listed. I really don't see how it could help them- judging from how bad Brady's two deep balls to Edelman and Vereen looked, the whole Lane Kiffin "it helps the passing game" motive didn't work out here. I think what Tombonneau posted makes the most sense; there was probably some ****-up during the game that is automatically inspected by the league. Bob Kravitz heard about it and ran with it.

This will suck, because this is gonna be a story for at least the next day. Whatever. Let it piss the team off.

The whole ball thing was only an issue to start the second half, if I can recall. That's only cause some issue with the K ball.
