In other words, Nate Washington has taken a lot of wear and tear. Does he still have enough left to even be competitive? And if he is, would you rather have a veteran on the downside of his career or a youngster whose arc is still going up?

There is always room on the team for 2-5 developmental players. However, when looking at the team that will get the reps this year, Belichick has OFTEN found room for old vets at the expense of young hopefuls, especially at the WR position. We all remember Morey and Childress. Carter has shown nowhere as much as either of these.

Statistics don't usually capture this dynamic very well but "drop" would imply the ball was catchable. If his drop rate is 50%, then his catch rate must be 50% or lower (50% would imply Hoyer never missed).

Just an observation from DeAndre Carter's highlight videos. He: has a small catch radius; not getting a lot of separation from the DB's; getting caught from behind when the ball is in his hands; turns his body to face the QB to locate the ball (not many catches on slants or over the shoulder); seems to catch the ball pretty well.

He must be doing something right to receive a high praise from Steve Smith SR and stick on the Patriot's practice squad.

Agreed that Belichick will not sacrifice this year for the future. Equally he will not sacrifice the future, and he has shown no hesitancy to go with youngsters over vets, all else being equal. In fact it's pretty commonly accepted that he would rather cut an aging vet a year too early than hang on to them a year too long.

Absolutely. Edelman, Amendola, Hogan and Mitchell are all locks--so there's 4 right off the bat. We won't count Slater for an actual position in this exercise, so let's assume one more spot.

That last spot should be a battle between Washington, Dobson, and Martin.

Guys like Harper, Lucien, and Carter should all be fine practice squad candidates. Maybe one of them develops and eventually contributes something down the line. The fact that Harper plays ST and knows the system likely gives him a leg up in that PS race.

Dez Bryant, a far sturdier athlete, has only recently been allowed to engage in full football activities, and he suffered the same injury 2 months earlier last season than Edelman did, and he underwnt the 2nd surgery - with a 6-month recovery period - 4 full months earlier than Edelman did.

And isn't Chris Harper the useless turd who fumbled the punt in Denver? The fact that he is still on the 90-man roster is as clear an example as can be found of the utter lack of accumen this FO has shown for over
a dozen damn years in finding legitimate WR prospects.

The starters, although good, aren't as good as 2014, but the depth is better. Not only are our CBs much younger, their cap hit is a small fraction of what it was in 2014. Browner sucks now, Arrington has always been inconsistent and even Revis is declining.

I realize that having one/both on PUP is a popular thought, but Amendola recently raved about how good he feels, so I don't know where that is coming from. He had what he described as "minor" procedures in his ankle and knee that occurred months ago.

Edelman, on the other hand, may be much more likely to start on PUP than Amendola.
