David Andrews hospitalized for blood clots (merged)

Blood clots are ridiculously painful. God bless him.

Blood clots in the lungs require serious blood thinners such as warfarin. Utilizing said blood thinners can result in life ending blood loss situations when it comes to getting skin cuts of marginal concern to anyone else. This is potentially career ending.

Nfl network confirming blood clot in lungs for Andrews.
Well if NFL Network says it (great source of medical knowledge), I guess we can rest assured that it's not a rumor.

Not good. Hope for a super swift recovery. Prayers out to him and his family.

His career is unfortunately over. He was a good player for the Pats.

At least they are catching it now and treating it.

@TommyD4207 @PlainOldEd @fgssand

What are you disagreeing with? Do you guys not realize how serious blood clots are in the lungs? You can’t play with that.

His season is almost certainly over - the minimum time to be on blood thinner is at least 6 months and you cannot play on blood thinner. Did he have any surgery this offseason (would be a risk factor for clots)?

Never mind his season it sounds like his life is in jeopardy. He seems like a great kid I hope he gets well quickly.
I was found to have blood clots in my right leg several years ago. Vascular surgeon said main thing was to stabilize to avoid clots going to your lungs which could result in an embolism and kill you. This sh*ts serious. He's not in a hospital just for observation.

This may buy Ferentz another year in the NFL. I believe his practice squad eligibility is up, which means it’s 53 or bust. This preseason has reinforced that he’s a center only and not a guard, so the problem was what to do if he and Andrews had to play together. Now, it looks like it may be Karras starting at center but moving to guard if Ferentz has to play.

Is their something wrong with the site....because now their is 3 funnies in this thread. If your reading this...please verify your emot-things

Not necessarily-lifelong anticoagulation is not routinely indicated (it is in certain situations). See Garcia.

Agreed. He was probably feeling seriously ill and rushed to the hospital.

Do you still have to treat your clots? Can they go away?

Correct. It is not a rumor any more.

Clots in the lung - pulmonary embolism- require full dose anticoagulation for a prolonged period - length depends on many factors.

Awful to hear. May the news get better for him from here on.
Yeah, I’m sure his season is over. But his career and his life after football are the priorities.
I don’t know much about this issue so hopefully it’s a one off and not something congenital or likely to recur.

They put me on Pradaxa for 6 months and had to wear compression sock. They stabilized and blood flow in vein improved. They never go away. Leg still swells if I sit for too long. I'm ok but it generally sucks.

Can't imagine what he's going through if already in his lungs. Thing is they don't know what causes them, anybody can get them.

1A. Fix the immediate, life-threatening problem.
1B. Figure out if there are more clots, elsewhere in the body, that could also move to the lungs, and deal with them.
2. Figure out what the underlying medical cause is and hope to be able to treat it.
3. Put together a long term health plan to maintain health, based on the results in step 2.
4. Figure out vocational options going forward, based on the results of step 3. Football may be possible, but even if so, if you are Andrews at this point in his career, do you take the risk?

This is like Bruschi's stroke.

Could be either. A postoperative embolus would be the best

And someone who plays in one of the most physically intense positions in major professional sports is probably more susceptible than others.

Could be either - without an identifiable risk factor like surgery, treatment is longer. There are also congenital clotting disorders in a minority of cases.
