Darrelle Revis Rumors and Speculation

Yeah, but are you going to pay a #2 CB elite #1 money. The Browns are flush with money, but they are barren with talent in a lot of areas. Sure they can throw a lot of money at the secondary and go the next three seasons with losing records losing games 0-3 or 3-6 every week.

It just isn't this year. They need to build for the future. They are probably two or three years away from being a legitimate contender. Revis may be on the wrong side of 30 by then. If they were a team that were a few pieces away from a Super Bowl run and had this much cash, it would make sense. But other than LT and #1 WR (who is up for a big deal next year), I can't think of a position they are all set on the offensive side.

If the Browns pay elite CB money to both Hayden and Revis, they are almost doomed to be a middle of the pack team for the foreseable future. Which means that the Browns will end up doing it.

The Browns top 5 needs

1. QB
2. QB
3. QB
4. RB1
5. WR2

QB is not coming through FA, but rather the draft. The running back market is at an all time low. They could pair Tate/Blount together for probably 6 million a year. This draft is absolutely loaded at WR. They will be pairing a high talented rookie across Gordon and can probably add Edelman/Sanders if they want to for the slot. BTW they have a top 5 TE as well. Throw in the best LT and C in football and that offense has talent.

Their DL is solid, the secondary will be pretty good after FA, and they are working on deals with Dansby as we speak. The team looks pretty strong besides QB IMO. They remind me of the Tarvaris Jackson 2011 Seahawks before Wilson came to turn them into a powerhouse the next season.

Last fall, Revis flat out said that he'd rather get $16M from the sucking Bucs rather than $12M from Rex and the Jets. Unless he's had a drastic change of heart (yeah right), then it's pretty clear that he cares about money more than who he's playing for.

Well, the Raiders are reportedly going to go hard after Revis. Perfect.

I love when people make posts like this. Obviously we are all speculating but given that Revis has asked to renegotiate and get more money year after year his history says it's about the money.

and I love when people make posts with such conviction about pure speculation. too easy to laugh about.

if you would've started with in my opinion, in all likelihood, I would've been able to contain myself.

its like when we all say, damn we lost to the browns last week and someone says, oh youre on the patriots now...

Exactly. A fourth and a 7th gets it done too. They plan to cut Revis anyways, thus getting nothing for him. Getting something is better than receiving nothing in return.

if theyre going to cut him anyways why offer anything? I dont give up more than a 5th if other teams are offering. I dont think they will. it would only make sense for Cleveland because he probably won't sign there.

Yup. I forgot about Alex Mack too. If they can get Sammy Watkins and Johnny Manziel (and he plays up to his promise), they could be really good.

It should also be pointed out that Revis is a year by year rental. Anytime the Browns think it's no longer viable to keep him, they can just cut him without losing anything in terms of cap space.

with the browns and raiders known to be interested, and presumably there are some teams that are interested but not yet public, itll probably take assets to secure a deal.

even if there weren't, itd be worth it to make a trade, contingent on a restructure. it keeps other teams out of the bidding process in the event of free agency.

But they aren't that barren. They have the #1LT, a top 5 WR, a very good TE, a strong DL and two good OLB and one of the best Cbs. On top of that they have five picks in the first three rounds of the deepest draft in years and 50m in cap space. Add Revis, Ben Tate and a safety in FA and then use your draft picks on a QB, WR and OL and they're in a really strong position providing the QB works out.

There are about a dozen players away from making a Super Bowl run. I was wrong, instead of only two good players on offense, they have three. That means they have to only upgrade seven to eight positions on offense instead of eight to nine. They have a lot of holes.

And let's not forget, several of their best players are approaching contract years off their rookie deals. Hayden and Gordon are going to command elite money, play under franchise tag numbers, or bolt in free agency in the next year or two. Jabaal Sheard's contract is up after this season.

They are likely to have a rookie QB which automatically means they are likely to be 2-3 years from making a legitimate run. It isn't about how much money they have this year, it is how much money they have two or three years from now when they make a real run for the Super Bowl. That is if they make a real run at the Super Bowl.

Personally, with Revis being 28, he makes most sense for teams with realistic shots at winning in the next year or two. He is in his prime right now and anyone getting him is likely to have to structure his contract to be backloaded. Or if keep the same contract he has now. If that is the case, he may need to be cut by the time he is good.

Revis just told reporters he will NOT accept any less than what he's making now...per EEI justr now

Alex Mack is a free agent and will command top dollar to keep since he was only transition tagged which means teams will structure a deal to make it hard for them to match.

So by start of 2015, the Browns might have the two highest paid CBs in the league, the highest paid WR in the league, and the highest paid center if they do what you are suggesting.

And how is a year by year rental (as you state) make perfect sense for a team that had the fourth worst record in the league last year and will be trying to rebuild around a rookie contract. Revis will help them be average while rebuilding and when they are ready to make a Super Bowl run, they can cut him?

There's no vocal intonation in a post so there's no way for you to know what my conviction level was. For me IMO is generally assumed. I was just stating an opinion like everybody else. If you think the Pats will trade for him I would disagree. If you think he'll sign a less than top dollar offer to play for a contender before the money I would strongly disagree based on his history. Doesn't mean I'm right or wrong I just believe it's a pipe dream.

Not unexpected. Somebody like the Browns will pay him. Hayden and Revis would be the best duo in the league.

When did Alex Mack sign with the Browns? In two hours, he is free to sign with any team he would like. The Browns have a chance to match, but if they don't, they will lose him with no compensation other than a 2015 compensator pick which may be nothing if they are active in free agency.

I'm not going round in circles with you. We disagree. Fine. I think I'll leave it at that. This isn't a topic I want to get bogged down in debating.

Revis gonna Mevis.

smart move, why would he want to be traded when he can get the same money on the open market and pick his team? **** going to cleveland.

And if they take one game off the Broncos then I'll be fine with this move.

Edit:

Silly me, was thinking of Hayden and the Raiders.

Pats need to sign Talib then.
Even at that, can Talib withstand being blocked by a smurf?

The Faiders can easily absorb his cap hit and be all the better for it. So much for that. Now the team needs to come to terms with Talib. Hopefully it happens before 4:00 PM.

He said he won't do it as part of a trade, it is POSSIBLE (unlikely, because this is still Revis we're talking about), that this is part of his plan to get cut to sign with a real team, instead of getting shipped to the Brown's or Raiders.

He may very well except "less" money to get more guaranteed money. He could have possibly taken the deal last year knowing it'd be a 1yr 16m contract (a "prove it" deal) with the intentions of getting himself a guaranteed deal afterwards.
