Danny Etling

Remind me not to give an opinion three days before the Super Bowl when the Patriots HAVEN'T made it to the big game.

This debate is stupid.

Tom Brady is the QBOTF.

Until #12 decides he isn’t.

End of discussion.

From after Etling was drafted

Etling was the 11th QB taken in this year's draft.

Here is NFL.com's list of QBs drafted, year by year.

NFL.com Draft 2018 - NFL Draft History: Full Draft Year

Outside of whatever the hell is going on with their list from this year before Lauletta, you can see the likelihood of QBs taken later having success in the NFL. It's not so much about round drafted as it is about number of QBs taken overall. Just going to back Brady, here's the last spot where a truly quality QB (in some years, it's not even true quality) was drafted*:

7 (Brady)
2 (Brees: longtime journeyman A.J. Feeley went 9th)
5 (Garrard, though Josh McCown, taken 4th, has outlasted him, you judge the quality, as they are the 2 best from 2002)
2 (Leftwich, though, again, you judge the quality there. Palmer went #1)
3 (Roethlisberger, with Schaub going 5th and Luke McCown going 6th)
2 (Rodgers, with Orton going 7th, Cassel going 12th and Fitzpatrick 13th)
3 (Cutler was the best of the sad bunch)
5 (Drew Stanton at #5 was the best of this bunch)
2 (Joe Flacco, after Ryan went 1st. After them, Henne is the best of the bunch, and was taken 4th)
1 (Stafford is the only QB really worth mentioning, though some may try slipping Sanchez, taken 2nd, into the mix)
1 (Bradford)
11 (Tyrod Taylor, if you rate him as true quality. Newton at #1 is the only high end starter, with Dalton going 5th)
8 (Cousins, in a draft that had Luck/Pre-injury RGIII/Tannehill/Wilson/Foles ahead of him)
3 (Manuel was #1,Geno Smith was #2, and Glennon was #3 in an absolute dog of a draft)
5 (Jag, giving him the benefit of the doubt. Those who don't want to do that can go with Carr at #4)
2 (Mariota, with Semian at #7 having been a starter for the Broncos for a bit, for those who want to argue him)
8 (Prescott, and #2 Wentz for those who don't buy into Prescott)
3 (Watson, though this is obviously just based on small sample sizes)

*Any miscounts or omissions were unintended

So Etling's inspirational targets ("successful" predecessors taken at #11 or later) are Ryan Fitzpatrick, Matt Cassel and Tyrod Taylor.

From a roster projection thread

Brady was a guy who'd won at a big time football college, but was getting kind of hosed because of the elite recruit (Drew Henson) who was coming in behind him and thought to be a lock for the NFL, and it's notable that Henson never actually beat him out for the job. Brady could have asked for a transfer because of the situation, but he chose to stay and fight for the job. Brady went 20-5 as a starter, and led Michigan to a pair of bowl victories in his two years as the starter. Brady fell in the draft because of the various and sundries, but he was still the 7th QB taken. When he got to New England, the Patriots were a rebuilding team that was not going to be competing in Brady's rookie season, so the team wasn't desperate to use that 53rd slot at another position. And Brady impressed from the very beginning.

Etling was the 11th QB taken. I noted the significance of that in an earlier post
Danny Etling Signs 4 Year Contract. (Merge).

Etlinger transferred to LSU rather than fighting for his job at Purdue, after he was beaten out by the immortal Austin Appleby. Etling went just 18-17 as a college starter and, from what I've seen, heard, and read, has absolutely not been setting the world on fire to this point in the offseason.

So, pretty much all the difference in the world.

But, OMG! Someone opined that this kid is not the QBOTF!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

If we win the SB, he will have the same number of rings than Aaron Rodgers.

I have no opinion on him other that he was ok during preseason which means nothing.

Huh, I actually have no opinion whatsoever on Etling. The only qualifications I would add: If he can become an effective starter, I suspect I always knew the kid had something special. OTOH if he washes out I kinda always knew he was a bum.

Yep, I definitely have no opinion ...

Etling is not the QBOTF

Blah, blah, certitude, blah, certitude, blah, blah....

'Edelman can never fill Welker's shoes.......'

Blah, blah, certitude, blah, certitude, blah, blah....

'Losing Mankins will hurt this team'......

4 out 0f 5 years' Super Bowl appearances later.............

The only two truths are that 1) nobody knows and 2) certitude is rancid.

.

You said that with such certainty.

Yep ... it's been a long 1.5 weeks when we're arguing about Danny Etling.

You're right, let's start a thread where people can finally voice their opinion on the uniforms both past and present.

????????

Dear Lord, I should have listened to Fnord in Post #20......

While in this instance it might have served you well it's important to note as a rule listening to Fnord isn't for the faint of heart. Having listened to @fnordcircle in the evening has been known to result in listening to a judge in the morning, putting up some serious bail money, inexplicable tattoos and some piercings you might not have previously considered in places you would just as soon most of the planet never sees. It's not for everyone but having somehow survived it once I'm strangely looking forward to the next night I can't remember with the guy James White can't forget.

The tattoos make perfect sense if you're coming down from a DMT breakthrough boi
