He's a 7th round pick. He's probably awful. There's a small chance he is decent. There is a very tiny chance he is good.

more or less i was going to write a similar post

for a 7th round pick i 'see' no risks at all

let's only wait and see...

8 pages of Danny Etling talk. I'm no expert, but I'm very confident that Danny Etling is a nobody. I think Tom Brady--who was a once in a lifetime find--has Patriots fans thinking we can just grab a QB in the 7th round and he's going to be a superstar.
If hes Matt Cassel its a great pick

Being an LSU grad, and having watched every snap Etling has taken as a Tiger I honestly don't know how this kid was on ANYONE's draft board, let alone ours. There is nothing in his play that suggests he brings anything to the next level.

With the level of running backs, wideouts and offensive linemen the Tigers crank out, all we've needed is mediocre QB play (game manager) to beat Bama, Auburn, Florida, etc...and we just haven't gotten it for years. Matt Mauck, Matt Flynn and Zach Mettenberger have been the only outliers this century. Etling was just the best QB out of a bunch of horrendously bad QBs.

When your entire fan base is begging for a 6'5'', 180 lb., bean pole, freshmen (Myles Brennan) to gain enough weight to not get broken in half on a corner blitz to be our passing savior, you know you don't have the answer currently at QB.

Sorry to pick on one of my own, but no, Danny...Just no!

Now, if Jeremy Hill can stay healthy, THEN we got ourselves a good Patriot/Tiger.

doesnt UofM/maznblu have any QB’s?

lol why bill? He sucks. Anyone who watches sec college football knows what I’m talking about.
who cares? He is a 7th rounder

IMHO, if he plays very, very well, Etling will make the Practice Squad.

Well sure, they could have taken Luke Falk at 43.

No, that would have meant missing out on our starting nickel back, and having more of the dreaded big dime (and big nickel for that matter).

Etling was the 11th QB taken in this year's draft.

Here is NFL.com's list of QBs drafted, year by year.

NFL.com Draft 2018 - NFL Draft History: Full Draft Year

Outside of whatever the hell is going on with their list from this year before Lauletta, you can see the likelihood of QBs taken later having success in the NFL. It's not so much about round drafted as it is about number of QBs taken overall. Just going to back Brady, here's the last spot where a truly quality QB (in some years, it's not even true quality) was drafted*:

7 (Brady)
2 (Brees: longtime journeyman A.J. Feeley went 9th)
5 (Garrard, though Josh McCown, taken 4th, has outlasted him, you judge the quality, as they are the 2 best from 2002)
2 (Leftwich, though, again, you judge the quality there. Palmer went #1)
3 (Roethlisberger, with Schaub going 5th and Luke McCown going 6th)
2 (Rodgers, with Orton going 7th, Cassel going 12th and Fitzpatrick 13th)
3 (Cutler was the best of the sad bunch)
5 (Drew Stanton at #5 was the best of this bunch)
2 (Joe Flacco, after Ryan went 1st. After them, Henne is the best of the bunch, and was taken 4th)
1 (Stafford is the only QB really worth mentioning, though some may try slipping Sanchez, taken 2nd, into the mix)
1 (Bradford)
11 (Tyrod Taylor, if you rate him as true quality. Newton at #1 is the only high end starter, with Dalton going 5th)
8 (Cousins, in a draft that had Luck/Pre-injury RGIII/Tannehill/Wilson/Foles ahead of him)
3 (Manuel was #1,Geno Smith was #2, and Glennon was #3 in an absolute dog of a draft)
5 (Jag, giving him the benefit of the doubt. Those who don't want to do that can go with Carr at #4)
2 (Mariota, with Semian at #7 having been a starter for the Broncos for a bit, for those who want to argue him)
8 (Prescott, and #2 Wentz for those who don't buy into Prescott)
3 (Watson, though this is obviously just based on small sample sizes)

*Any miscounts or omissions were unintended

So Etling's inspirational targets ("successful" predecessors taken at #11 or later) are Ryan Fitzpatrick, Matt Cassel and Tyrod Taylor.
Sounds like in seven or eight years we'll be watching a documentary titled "The Etling Ten."

No, that would have meant missing out on our starting nickel back, and having more of the dreaded big dime (and big nickel for that matter).
.sighs. A lot of people seemed to miss the sarcasm in that post.

THe one thing that stands out to me about Etling is how he avoids playing the body. He'll drop further back and instantly start to scramble if a defender gets close. He doesn't want to get hit, even to make the play. Even in his highlights it's easy to see several plays where he clearly sees what he needs to do, then hesitates, looks at the defenders and starts to scramble. he sees the play, but hesitates to take the hit to make the play.

If he was willing to take contact in order to deliver the football, he would be a much better quarterback. He needs to have the physical courage to execute in tight throwing windows. I think that might actually be one of the big coaching points BB plans on working with him on.

I don't see evidence in this thread of a contingent of Pats fans thinking that at all. I see a number of Pats fans who are curious about this guy, providing information when they have it, and weighing that information as best they can from a distance. I see Pats fans wondering about the use of the pick. I see Pats fans weighing the possibilities of using another, higher pick for a QB. There are of course the usual statements of certainty that deride the football player and that are (I guess) emotionally gratifying, but actually just deride the conversation and the poster.

But, if he's Matt Cassel, then, "Trade Brady" thread notwithstanding, he's not Brady's replacement.

Let's hope not. I keep catching myself with an assumption that the next Pats QB is going to be really good, just because, well, its the Pats. Then I realize that's magical thinking. There's no reason to assume the guy who succeeds Brady is going to be a top 5 NFL QB.

Jimmy G could be was the perfect succession plan.
Everything I read about Etling is encouraging.
He seems like a great human being has a strong arm can make NFL throws has knowingly worked on his mechanics.
Has mentioned the aha moment about how he can get more on his throws with better technique.
Throw in the fact he was admittedly playing sheepish after a back injury and this has the chance to be a sneaky good pick.
They must of had him ahead of Lauletta And Falk and equal footing to Rudolph.

Beilichick loves making those im smarter than you pick and this may be his.

Caserio said he made 150 throws had already shown improvement in his mechanics.
Prediction is his floor is a number 2.

This year makes the roster as a 3 next year replaces a retiring Hoyer.

Only thing I really dislike is that hes a Colts fan.

I wonder if we avoided trying to draft a QBOTF to specifically make sure we avoid another JG situation where Brady may/may not be done by the time the rookie's contract is up or they simply weren't in love with any QB enough to take him at their respective positions (or move up like they easily could have for Rosen)

This was a throw it against the wall and see if it sticks pick. I have no idea if BB like him better than any other qb, the ones mentioned before were both gone in the 7th round. If they had been there in the 7th round BB might have picked them. They weren't, he didn't. It is a freaking 7th round pick, going to a team that has been in the superbowl three of the last 4 years and won it twice. Any rookie will have a tough time making the roster. However they often keep a QB on the practice squad, and he looks like it might be him. He had enough warts to drop way down, but he also had some stats that make you look twice. If those warts are correctable then who knows what they have.
