Step Right Up, We'll Guess Your Weight

FOXBORO - Day 2 of Patriots Minicamp brought another day of "That jersey makes him look fat..." conversations from those charged with chronicling the exploits of the great franchise.

During Bill Belichick's press conference, a writer asked Bill Belichick if linebacker Monty Beisel had put on some muscle during the offseason. Belichick said no, nothing worth noting.

The writer mentioned that Beisel himself said he'd put on more than a dozen punds. Belichick differed about said beefiness and said he'd check the weigh-in numbers but didn't think that was the case.

This was all very civil, by the way, it was just getting to be kind of funny. Then the writer said he thought Beisel looked a little more "cut." Which would be hard to tell because the fella was fully clothed. Instead of a shrug, though, Belichick said he thought Beisel was pretty "cut" last year.

At this point, i started staring at my shoes because the whole thing had gone two exits past amusing and entered into awkwardly hysterical.

Had the writer not folded his tent we might still be there talking about body fat and lats.

Ironically (or coincidentally...or maybe even interestingly) yesterday, I noted that Corey Dillon looked like he had something approximating his old explosiveness during practice. I thought he looked in fine fettle. My buddy from the Herald and Boston's ESPN Radio 890 thought Dillon looked out of shape.

Not only did Mike and I see Dillon differently, I commented on the fact that Johnathan Sullivan's 315 pounds were well distributed.

Felger called Sullivan a "fat tub of goo" (bonus points if you know what circumstance first made that phrase famous).

So I said to Felger today, "You thought he was fat?"

"Yeah, did you see his face?" he answered.

"Well his head alone probably weighs 44 pounds but other than that he didn't look fat to me."

Anyway, I pledge to cease all commentary on player physiques for the remainder of minicamp.

And "fat tub of goo" was used by David Letterman to describe Dodgers reliever Terry Forster way back when. You can Google it to get the right date, I don't feel like it.

This is why I really dig Curran. I e-mailed him once and told him to keep calling out the Boston elites in the media. This takes balls! I mean, he sees all these guys on a regular basis. I'm gonna e-mail him again. Good Stuff, Keepin' it real in Rhode Island!

Well, this is interesting. Actually, I'm not so concerned about DTs and NTs having bellies. All the good ones do. It's the DEs that need to be lean and fast.

But Sullivan was reported to be fat in NO last month. If his weight is even a little distributed, and he "gets it" from Seymour and Co., then there might be some hope for aneven better DLine than last year.

That thought alone must send shivers through the AFCE. Here's hoping that by December, Saban, Jauron, and Mangini are cursing Payton for making the trade!

Not so much concerned with how much he looks like he weighs, but Sullivan looks like he's in pain. Hopefully, it's from trying to "digest" the playbook!

Felger just tries to be controversial now all the time. He was good when he was a beat writer and when his radio show first came on, but now he blows. He used to tell it like it was, now he's trying to make a name for himself.

I'll take Curran's version of the events.

I don't see how the hell Sulivan looks any fatter then Wilfork. What does he want? A friggin DL full of 200 pound guys?

He definitely does not look fatter than Wilfork, but I hope he's careful wearing all those layers in the heat. I'm sure he's trying to drop weight, but thats the wrong way to do it for such a big guy.

That is some of the best stuff Curren has written in ages. He should devote more of his blog time to covering his peers performances during and after Gillette PC's.

Felger is on pace to have himself declared persona non grata in Foxboro. He did a segment on his radio show today that included a interview with Beisel where he asked such innocent questions as since you started last year then lost your job what do you think will be different this year....interspersed with multiple replays of the audio cut from last season when Beisel went off on a reporter (Curren I believe). Mike is salivating at the prospect that someone in that locker room will go postal on him and elevate him to Shaughnessy status. It would be almost karmic too cause he also has a (shall I say rotund) curly haired boyfriend in Tomase.

Well I know the scowl takes a lot of effort to maintain, but what mucle groups was Fleger expeting Corey to be working to make his face trim??

Oh well, Sully looked like was a bit winded, maybe it was right after a run. He doesn't look like mush though. (Oops, sorry, goo.)

This was a case where two pictures are worth a lot more than a thousand words. Sully is big, like lots of NTs, but he is NOT a dripping "tub of goo".

It is a common technique for an incoming coach to select an out-of-favor, under performing guy, and ship him out. I was advised as a new officer in the service to come into a situation as a bastard and get easier over time. Its much much harder to come in as a nice guy, and toughen up later.

That's what the incoming N.O coach did. I still think Felger might have been requested to jump all over Sully, by the Coaches, as a way of confirming that he is definitely on probation, so he better get his ass in gear!

Somehow I highly doubt that the coaches are going to ask the media to try and "motivate" or send a message to their players.
