Curran:Banishing Collins was a drastic move for not so drastic times

Would be nice if he could have figured out that the dude doesn't care about football before actually drafting him though.

Even if you kinda check for that at college level, who the hell can predict how the relative success that put Collins into media/league spotlight in the last 2 years would affected him. It is what it is..

BB's schemes were from a different time. Try pounding M Faulk in a SB in today's NFL. He could be aggressive while DC w the Giants - no cap meant keeping alltime talent, no player protection meant pounding on the field, more macho-style meant it was smash mouth rather than precision...

In today's game, BB's strategy works. Look at his record. He has how many wins since 2000 ? Rings ?

The "we should win every year" crowd - I'm convinced BB would tell you - minimize the difficulty of (1) winning year in year out (2) managing millionaires (3) controlling me first millenials (4) dealing with injuries.....

Aggressive Ds are getting torched by Brady on a weekly basis. I prefer winning. BB's master plan gives us that.

Imho the bold statements are more about Brady than Belichick. If my math is correct, Belichick's record in Patriots games not started by Tommy LomBrady is a very average 19-19.

You can also say since BB implemented his program and Brady was named the starter, NE is 14-6 without him.

No need to make this a BB or TB discussion. Neither one has their respective level of success without the other.

The discussion is valid considering the two statements to which I responded.

The reason Belichick has such a great record here is definitely related to having Tom Brady torch opposing defenses.

I wonder how Belichick would fare if he had to defend Brady?

With the current defense?

I think you'd see the 2014 vs GB, 2010 Jets and 1990 SB vs the Bills game plan

7-8 in coverage 70% of the time.
Occasional blitz
Hit Brady again and again....although that might piss him off.

Yep, those made me feel Curran was trying to knife Patricia with that piece. He conveniently ignores the report that Collins got into a heated argument with Patricia recently, which really shifts the narrative from Patricia not being able to get Collins to play the way the wanted, to Collins pushing back and resisting his coaching. Can't blame the coach if a player decides he doesn't want to be coached.

What report of an argument are you referring to? Any link?

Loyko tweeted it. I'm 50/50 believing it. Players and coaches get hot at each other sometimes. It happens. We will never know if there was an argument and if so, what it was about.

Curran is one of the few Boston sportswriters I respect. But I think he is off base on this one. He has no idea how bad it was. None of us do.

Curran (like the other beat writers) is in the locker room almost every day, and as he's not an azzhole I bet he has plenty of good relationships with players. So I bet he actually knows quite a bit about what was going on in terms of how Collins was acting and what players thought of him.

He also clearly has a good relationship with BB for a media member (BB ragging on him for his golf shoes, the general consensus that BB fed Curran questions to ask during the Mona Lisa Vito press conference, etc.) so he likely has some info from that direction as well.

I think Curran does know what is going on but I don't think (what do I know...) that BB would use him as a mouthpiece to light a fire under Blackbeard. Thats something a Harbaugh or Mike Tomlin would do.

BB would go right up to Blackbeard behind closed doors and with the utmost professionalism share with him his observations and suggestions on where he needs to improve upon.

Let's cut to the chase...
Keeping Collins for the final 8 games plus playoffs...as an impending free agent...as a lame duck Patriot ...how willing would Collins or anyone in his situation be to sacrifice his body for a team that is not in your future ...knowing that injury could jeopardize the massive windfall of cash likely coming his way if he survives 8 more weeks.
This is not BB's first rodeo. He's seen it all which includes varying levels of commitment and sacrifice. IMO, BB saw Collins as a player he couldn't count on down the stretch because his Patriots future had already been settled once contract talks went nowhere

Look at the 2nd play of the Buff game where 91 freelanced and a 28 yd 1st down run ensued.
I suspect that Collins was in a mind set of wanting some big play hight reel film to boost his $ in FA.
When you are on a D whose scheme necessitates each person doing their job in a particular way for the synergistic mesh to coalesce, freelance errors come at a high price. If you freelance, you had best be right like vets such as Rodney Harrison who understood what the other 10 were doing such that errors were minimal and upside maximized.

I can't read this any other way than as "Look, guys, I'm as bewildered as you are.":

"I think everybody understands Coach Belichick makes very difficult decisions about this football team every single day," Patricia said. "Obviously, like all of us, we care a lot about this team, we care a lot about our players. We care a lot about trying to make sure that we're always trying to do things that will help the team in any way possible.

"I don't really have a lot to say about [the trade] . . . Jamie was a great player, he was a great person, still is obviously. Close relationship with him. That's part of the reason we coach is to build those close relationships with players and help them become better players, but also better people. They obviously help us become better people.

"It changes. It's part of the league. It's part of what happens all the time. We understand that. We move on. We make sure we kind of focus on what's next. It's our next task. Look, whether it's roster moves, additions, subtractions, injuries, it's part of the game, it's part of what we expect. In general, for us, it's really about focusing on the forward part of everything.

"Obviously appreciate everything that he did while he was here. Won a championship with him. He was great in meetings, great just to be around. Just overall, everything was really good. It is what it is. We're just really focused on trying to take this week and get better. Take a look at the things we've been doing so far in the first eight weeks of the year. We got an eight game season coming up, and that's what we're focusing on."

Patricia: Collins 'a great person to be around, a great person to have in the program'

you have to understand, the only one talking trash about collins is not currently in the organization........those who are don't kick people on the way out......why? because he may actually be back some day....don't burn bridges.....

Loyko had a source close to Collins specifically and also tweeted about the 11m "offer" long before Fat Volin and others did. I fully believe him on the reports that there was an argument with MP soon after that much dissected play against Buffalo and another heated conversation with BB later on.

JC got in an argument w/ BB? Yikes!

I suppose "argument" isnt necessarily the correct word but BB definitely ripped into him. The context for the tweet ("run in with coaches") is JC's argument with Patricia after the infamous run whiff.

Good read, and i think hes right in the past both parcells and BB have cut or traded players to send a message, usually with good results. But like currans says the pats are 7-1 theres no need at this time for such a drastic move. On top of that is his passive bend but don't break scheme that while effective i personally don't watching, i'd rather have the defense be more aggressive. While BBs approach has worked, so hasn't a more aggresive get after the QB style ala denver and the nyg's

Ok. I buy it I guess. Arguments are indeed common but maybe some things were said by Jamie that made BB's decision a little easier.

So while BB is certainly not quick to judgement, that might have been the straw that broke the camel's back.

it's making a lot more sense now. Collins has been freelancing this season, play has not been as good as in past, inconsistent. He got burned bigtime freelancing at Buffalo, Patricia got on him about it and he pushed back. Then Belichick called him out after the game and that did not go well.

First thought, BB can't tolerate that. Second thought, glad it happened this week and not after the trade deadline.

Final thought, clear message sent: our way or the highway.

............perspective........... you're 7-1 and went without Brady for 4 weeks at 3-1. I think you'll be fine.

as I said before, they didn't let Mario Williams happen in hoodville.

Now I'm wondering if Bus Cook and Jamie orchestrated this whole charade to shoot his way out of Foxboro.

He knew BB would have no choice but to dump his ass.

If he did that, I have no respect for him. Hes dead to me.

He already got a green light from Hue to freelance and ballhawk and pad his individual stats in Cleveland. He can be the hero and get the name for himself he wanted. And at the end of the year he can be in play for the big bucks. Meanwhile all he has to do is to endure or ignore the taste of losing. A lot.
