Could the Patriots Win a SB With Hoyer as the Starting QB?

A better question might be, could the Pats win one playoff game with Hoyer as QB? Winning a run of playoff games would be ludicrous, but what about one game? Obviously would prefer to never have to find out.

They could make the playoffs since 8 wins could maybe still win the afce this year but they would go nowhere

5-11 at worst, 8-8 at best last season.

Let's start with last year's 11-5 with Brady. Hoyer does not win the games against Chiefs, Texans, and Packers. Those were tight games needing all the offense they got. The Bears, Vikings, and first Jets game would have been questionable as well.

I don't know guys. This is a guy who went 10-6 over 2 years for Cleveland FREAKIN' Browns. (2013-14) He's certainly isn't a franchise QB in this league, but BB won a superbowl with the 2001 Tom Brady. He of the 18 TD's and 12 picks. Remember back when Tom was "just" a game manager averaging 203 passing ypg.

Now I don't know if Hoyer could take a team on his back and WIN games, but he is good enough to help a good team not lose games. If this defense is as good as it's potential then, yes, I think Hoyer could manage the team to the playoffs....IF we have same luck with injuries like last year, and our share of lucky bounces.

It gets a LOT harder once you're in the playoffs though. I DON'T see Brian Hoyer being good enough to win 4 straight games against THAT level of competition.

But IF we had a repeat situation of 2008, then I would expect Brian Hoyer to do enough that the Pats will be competitive in every game they play. As a fan, what more can I ask.

Matt Cassel caught fire by the end of 2008 and who knows how that would have turned out if we had made it to the playoffs. With that said, I have always thought Hoyer was better than Cassel. I have always had an unreasonable amount of faith in Hoyer. I'm going to put on those rose colored glasses and say yes we can win a sb with Hoyer.

Joke thread? The road to a Super Bowl isn't easy. You'll run into games like our most recent AFCCG. Only a truly elite QB wins that game. Hoyer could win us a playoff game but when the stakes are super high in a clutch situation I don't believe in him. Brady is legitimately a wizard at the position. The **** Brady pulls off to win big games, few QB's can and definitely not Hoyer.

And honestly no disrespect meant to the guy. He is good enough to have started and still be in the league.

They can. If Bill and Josh can win 11 games with Cassel, they can win 10-11 games with Hoyer and that’s good enough for a wild card. The running game will have to be absolutely dominant though.

I would expect this type of nonsense from the Max Kellerman-type but not from a Pats fan.

The insinuation that Belichick can win with any QB is the biggest myth perpetuated by Brady haters but it doesn't stand to an ounce of scrutiny.

He's 41-57 without Brady, 207-60 with Brady, 237-70 including the playoffs.

In the 7 seasons he coached without Brady, he made the playoffs once, including two years in New England. He had 5 losing seasons in those 7 years. Biggest win total was 11.

In 17 seasons with Brady, he's missed the playoffs once, he's never had a losing season and he made 9 SB's. He's had less than 11 wins in only 3 out of those 17 seasons.

This is another ''argument'' that gets around that's just as dumb.

The difference between the 2007 and the 2008 Pats, i.e with and without Brady, was that one of those teams became the highest scoring offense in history (still #2 after all these years) the first and only team to win 16 games, and came an inch away from 19-0. The other team missed the playoffs and got smashed by every AFC contender.

So the difference between having the GOAT QB is a GOAT team and having a mediocre QB is a mediocre team. Who would have ever thought? Did anyone expect the Pats to be 2-14 because he doesn't play? You still need a decent team even if you have Brady. But a decent team + Brady is an automatic AFCCG appearance.

That defense being the same that allowed 31 second half points against the Chiefs and required Brady to have three straight would-be-game-winning drives to win it.

This post isn't meant to be Brady>>Belichick. Both have been equally important for this remarkable run. But Belichick made Brady or Brady iS a SyStEm QB is something i'm not going to stand for.

I think depending on how some 50/50 situations develop and how much luck is on your side with dropped passes and INTs Hoyer with the Pats coaching staff could take you anywhere from 10-6 to 6-10.

I always thought of him as a 0.500 type of QB who can keep the ship steady if Brady had to miss 2-4 games. But to be anything beyond that he'd have to play completely out of his mind for an entire season which is pretty unlikely.

But having this kind of player is pretty valuable at the price they have had him the last 2 years. Maybe Stidham can grow beyond him and be a true QB2 next year.
