It’s gonna get worse long before it gets better. I am also of firm belief that it was not a naturally occurring event. No way would they admit it was a bio weapon even mistakenly let loose because then China would be on the hook for the entire planets wrath and that’s not good for anyone. So they will say it is natural and has no traces of man made. I mean hell there is a bio lab right there and I don’t trust the Chinese as far a you can throw them.

I don’t believe that this virus just happened to come from eating bats just a few miles away from said lab. Just way too convenient no matter what the reported spin is on it.

The fatality rate is not 3-4%. That is the fatality rate out of the amount of confirmed cases. There are likely thousands more people who have had mild, unconfirmed cases or had the virus but no symptoms.

It remains a very serious situation and I’m concerned about it but 3-4% doesn’t sound right at all.

I'm not disagreeing but not known how many may of had this already is a problem within it self.

I don’t think it was on purpose. It’s China. Do some testing on Bats which is what they were doing as they are the carrier. Bat tagged for destruction somehow makes it to the wet market. Just saying kinda odd there is a bio lab right there.

I have no proof or allegation they did it on purpose.

If someone were seeking to engineer a new coronavirus as a pathogen, they would have constructed it from the backbone of a virus known to cause illness. But the scientists found that the SARS-CoV-2 backbone differed substantially from those of already known coronaviruses and mostly resembled related viruses found in bats and pangolins.


"These two features of the virus, the mutations in the RBD portion of the spike protein and its distinct backbone, rules out laboratory manipulation as a potential origin for SARS-CoV-2" said Andersen.

Josie Golding, PhD, epidemics lead at UK-based Wellcome Trust, said the findings by Andersen and his colleagues are "crucially important to bring an evidence-based view to the rumors that have been circulating about the origins of the virus (SARS-CoV-2) causing COVID-19."

The fatality is not 3-4%. Right now it is well under 2% here and headed for 1% and lower. The more mild disease we find, the lower it goes.

That's the dilemma. If the hospitals don't become overwhelmed we'll be fine. If they do the death rate skyrockets by up to a multiple of ten. At least that's what we're seeing elsewhere.

Wuhan has a metro area of 19 million, about the same as NYC.

We’re not talking about Hawkins, Indiana. It’s really not that big a coincidence that some research is being done on bats/Coronavirus in a major metro area. Has anyone cross checked how many similar labs there around the world? I’m sure that critical thinking must be included in this allegation because it sounds so very scientific.

I understand the truth of that statement. Unfortunately all too often in your defenses you come off more than a little like the President did in that 1st snippet. You misrepresented his position; Fnord never said it's "impossible", you put that word in his mouth.

He said it doesn't make much sense to immediately reach a biochemical weapon conclusion in the face of the existing evidence. I'm sure if new evidence comes to light suggesting this was an intentional attack, Fnord (and myself) would change our positions.

It's like if someone got drunk and killed themselves behind the wheel, and we have evidence that they've been a longtime, voluntary heavy drinker for 10+ years and has drove drunk before, yet automatically assume someone spiked their drink and roofied them, which is why they crashed and died, and not because that person willingly drank alcohol and got behind the wheel.

Based on history, context, and probability, one of those explanations seems a lot more likely than the other and would be the natural place to begin. It doesn't mean any other explanation is impossible and completely off the table, it just means it's less likely.

I didn't question the relative merit of taking a defensive position when it comes to someone you support. I pointed out what I thought were some flaws in how you've gone about it.

I don‘t give a real rats ass how it happened really. It’s here regardless of where it originated from. The fact that people don’t understand the geo/politcial fallout from a misuse of testing at a biolab would be immense is amazing. China isn’t exactly a stickler for regulations and the like. Also, never trust what experts say on the origins of these things. There are entities that need to be protected otherwise world wide chaos would ensue.

It isn’t like we haven’t had incidents ourselves with accidental disease releases right?
