65 deaths in USA from corona

18,000 from influenza

What am I missing?

"65 people died from drowning last year, so this fire that is spreading from houses that nobody will know is on fire for another 5 days it is no big deal."

What sucks is the absolute best case scenario is that we somehow don't arrive at QM's conservative 990k deaths number because of all the precautions people are taking and then a bunch of smug aholes will go 'See it was no big deal after all' and brag about eating at Red Robin to own the libs.

I don't know. I think the federal guidelines are going to suggest a widespread shutdown of everything though. I think if you can work from home, work from home. I expect I'll have the virus in 3-5 days.
Hang in there man.

I am a substitute Teacher. Out of work for a while. At least I will be home with my kids and not pay for any childcare. My wife is a nurse so she will still work and still bring home income.

Wish her the best.

Dr Fauci said, if everyone felt that they were overreacting by following all the guidelines and the result of that deaths and illness were much, much less than indicated, he would take it. Love that bastard.

What, you think it just started (in the US) a few weeks ago?

Also, for people bringing up testing, I cannot believe that doctors, with all their experience and medical knowledge, are SO solely dependent on testing devices to provide treatment to their patients. Are they not able to diagnose symptoms and base on their highly educated guess, determine what to do?
The tests are vitally important. Without tests they have to assume everyone with relevant symptoms has it and so have to do a full suit-up and then suit removal. Slows things wayyyy down. If they had tests they’d know who doesn’t have it and wouldn’t have to waste that time.

She works in the NICU and not the ER so I am thankful for that.
Still going to be tough with the future staff getting ill etc. Will not be easy.

The FDA likely required a more stringent test, one that would ensure accuracy. I have heard that the WHO test had a 50% false negative rate, which means that half of the people tested will get the wrong result. In other words, their testing kits could be useless.

/facepalm

Right, the same testing kits that allowed Singapore and Japan to severely mitigate the damage, allowed China and South Korea to quickly identify and isolate just weren't good enough for 'murica!

yep, I know what you're reading and I know where you're reading it.

Are you able to work from home? Please take all precautions. I think you’re still just early enough in realizing this to have a good chance of avoiding the virus.

I am working from home and the family is all here.

I'd like to know more about the factors behind this. It's easy to just say the surging veins of nationalism were at play here but I always remember the line "most regulations are written in blood."

There may have been entirely valid reasons for us to come up with our own, 2 hour slower test. I'm not trying to be an enlightened centrist, because I'm not, but I just want my outrage to be about things that are grounded in facts.

Severely limited, according to what? Test kits that could be unreliable?

Did you know conservatives surf more porn than liberals?

I'm a Boston native but live in the Deep South. Bible Belt.
I saw a stat a few years ago that the highest per capita porn consumption by US states: top 10 were ALL southern states.
I always take glee in reminding my southern friends.
