Contract and use of Hughes

Slight problem with Lyoko's take is Waddle is still on the team so Waddle would be the one replacing Fleming.

Think it is more likely to mean Gronk will be inactive.
Gronk reported continued progress with no setbacks. Possible that Waddle can't replace Fleming on STs. Pretty odd though.

Are we sure Scruggs is actually playing TE??? He played DE in college and his first 4 years in the nfl and then switched to TE this off-season.

Yet they have AJ Derby who has been inactive the last two weeks. Guess they really must be unimpressed with Derby's blocking ability so far if they're going to play a guy who just got the playbook today instead.
Scruggs is a bigger, stronger player than Derby, who is more of an H-back. Possible that he slides into a ST slot that Derby is too small to fill. Not sure why Waddle couldn't, but Waddle bigger, less athletic. Shows how uninformed we are.

We drop Hughes for Scrubbs? What's that say about him?

He's got it right. Just think about it.
He means Scruggs replacing Fleming in the role of additional OL/TE.

i would be shocked if he wasnt gone, especially because the pats will have to clear two roster spots
They have to clear the two regardless of whether Hughes comes back for Scruggs (although they have a two week roster exemption on activating Brady and Ninkovich, obviously they won't use it on Brady but depending on the health status of Ninkovich, they may not activate him immediately).

************.
Didn't think this thread would take such abrupt 180 turn.

I actually was expecting a move today - but more in the line of Reece. Bringing baby Gronk to PS cancels it I guess. But again its strange they didn't bring him last week to have him for shadow practice these days.

This is quite a shock - even if its just for one game - because it says something about whole bunch of players that were well liked on this board.

I do like the BF take:
Wouldn't be surprised if Scruggs is gone on Monday with Hughes back. Hughes gets paid for the week, maybe not ready to play, gets cut for needed roster spot, back on Monday. We'll see.

I know we need 2 spots on Monday but I guess a this point everything is possible.
After Monday when the dust settles, we'll see who is who I guess.

BTW: Of course this is not good news for Derby but I saw him more in line as a possible WR back-up since we are very thin there. If he goes its goodbye to him (if there was interest for Bryce Williams I can imagine one for Derby - hopefully I am wrong) and to that option.

Except he's doesn't when you really look at it.

Scruggs was a DL for the last 8 years in college and nfl, he just made the switch to TE a couple of months ago and has had what? 2 days with the Pats.

Waddle who is an actual OT would be a lot more likely to slide into Fleming's spot as that 6th OL.

Not for the first time, BB's roster moves are a mystery to me.

I can only think that they need to replace Jake Bequette.

Is this a case of John Hughes being a scout team clone for a week?

We've seen an end catch touchdowns. Maybe we'll see a tight end get a sack?

I meant the rationale of his post was right - it could happen. Not that it would.

From what we know he can play both. Loyko's not the only one with this idea. Some see him as blocking help, some see him playing D - which would be more logical since there are only 3 DL left on the roster.

But I wouldn't bet on logic here. Not in this case. Not on this night.
Hell, right now you could tell me he plays both on Sunday ..

Here's Reiss' take - if that can help anyone ..

Here is a bit more on Scruggs:

  • At 6-foot-3 and 277 pounds, he is considered a strong blocker. He fits the profile of injured tight end Michael Williams
  • He had played in all three games for the Bears this season and was released Sept. 27. Scruggs played a total of eight offensive snaps and 17 special-teams snaps in those games. He didn't register an official statistic. Scruggs has played in 18 career NFL games.
  • As a member of the Bears, the Patriots got a closer look at him during three joint practices in August. Scruggs attempted to play the role of peacemaker during a Malcolm Butler/Alshon Jeffery scuffle in which both Butler and Jeffery were ejected from practice.

So maybe BB just needed a peacemaker for Sunday ..
.

So he can play TE, DE and special teams and BB got a good look at him during joint practices... We know BB values versatility. Might be one of those players BB keeps his eye on and snatches up when they become available.

****, with how undisciplined the Bears were in those practices, it probably made an impression on BB that Scruggs was a "peacemaker".

Maybe BB wants to make sure his running game has a chance vs Bills Defense with a blocking TE opposite Bennett......(If Gronk not ready to go)

Letting Hughes go and still having 3 healthy heavies to plug the middle and keep McCoy corralled should be ok.......

Never question the mind of the Jedi Master
